Celexa?

Hi again,

I haven't posted for awhile, and I'm still not sure if LBD is what is afflicting

my mother. But she's confused for sure since her hip surgery in March, and in

the past few weeks she's even gotten a bit violent. Not terribly so, but has

thrown her pills at the nurses, tried to grab at them, gets very agitated at

times. VERY unlike her. Even if LBD is not her issue, I feel that much of the

advice on drugs is similar for people suffering from dementia.

Since this more aggressive behavior has started, the charge nurse mentioned to

me today that he is going to propose starting her on Celexa. I've agreed to

this, as it's perhaps better to have a small does of something regularly rather

than getting a shot of Haldol when she is behaving unreasonably and can't be

calmed.

Thoughts?

Did they give her Haldol at any point? After my mom broke her shoulders,

even though I had provided information to the hospital about drugs that are

dangerous for LBDers, they gave Mom Haldol when I wasn't there to prevent

it and that started her downward spiral. If they did give her Haldol, that

might have contributed to the issues they are now having.

Celexa is an anti-anxiety drug. I take it myself. But my mom never did.

A very low dose of Seroquel was all she needed. Her doctor's philosophy,

which I completely agreed with, was the fewer drugs, the better. Don't

trust the hospital's doctor for this kind of decision without checking with

her own primary or geriatric doctor. And question (including looking up

drug info on the web) everything they give your mom. I left that

particular experience realizing that doctors don't always have all of the

information and sometimes don't even read the chart thoroughly. And nurses

are very good at persuading the midnight doctor to administer certain drugs

regardless of cautions and requests from the family. I think it is best to

be on the safe side and assume LBD where drugs are concerned.

Shortly after that, we put Mom on palliative care.

Sorry, all who are nurses or doctors. I should have included the words " a

few " in a couple of sentences. We had a subsequent experience at a

different hospital that was SO VERY GOOD. Knowing of Mom's dementia, they

not only allowed us to stay with her 24/7 (in shifts), they supported it.

Mom had lost a lot of words by then and the hospital staff found it was a

lot easier to meet Mom's needs if one of us was there to interpret for her.

They even put Mom in a large room and brought a bed in for whoever was

staying.

Care differs so much between hospitals and clinics. I'm lucky to be in a

city that has so many to choose from (and 100 miles from the original Mayo

Clinic). To be on the safe side, I've learned to question everything.
