Guest guest
So Sorry you are experienceing this! Our first pediatrician sucked too. There are a lot of folks on the board who got their kids banded at 10, 11, 12 months and older and have gotten good correction. I am sure they will respond to your post as well. Banding DOES work. i do not know why some doctors still hold to the belief that they don't. I have seen wonderful results on my daughter. I am posting new pics in a minute, feel free to check out her change in her folder under "our plagio kids". Her folder is "Kennedy". Good luck with your band!!!! Keep us posted! This is a great group with a lot of info. Check out the "before and after" section of photos! Well, last week I took my daughter in for a sick baby visit and saw the other pediatrician on call. He told me that she should definately be banded, as her ears are misaligned. Needless to say, I switched to this pediatrician and am 100% going to get her a band - as my gut was telling me all along. He referred me to a plastic surgeon in the area who is supposed to be great with plagio. My concerns are that at 10 months the treatment won't work - any thoughts? She will be banded at the end of the month - so she will be almost 11 months. Antother pediatrician told me that we shouldn't waste our time with the band b/c it doesn't work - hopefully her hair would cover the spot. Why would a pediatrician say this? Also, does anyone know what the average treatment time is for this age? Thanks for any answers! For more plagio info
Guest guest
Hi, Welcome to the group. The ped might have told you a helmet wouldn't work b/c he was referring to a passive helmet. He's right at your daughter's age a passive helmet wouldn't work as they rely totally on growth. An active band like the DOCband or the STARband will work for your baby. My baby was DOCbanded at almost 11.5 months old and received excellent correction. An active band redirects the growth of the head through gentle pressure not felt by the baby. Where are you located? What is the name of the plastic surgeon you're going to? --- In Plagiocephaly , " amks1027 " <amks1027@y...> wrote: > > Hi, we were just told that our 10 month old needs a band. everytime > I asked my pediatrician about her flat spot he just dismissed it > as " no big deal, just cosmetic " . Guest guest
Thanks for the quick response! I am so angry that we waited this long. Something in my gut kept telling me that my old pediatrician was WRONG. Ugh! Do you know any differences between the bands? Guest guest
Hi thanks! the pediatrican definately send a band wouldn't work - didn't even mention a helmet - but it doesn't even matter b/c I am going forward with it anyway. I was referred to Dr. Vicari in Chicago. Guest guest
From what I have heard here, Starband is great but you want to make sure that you have a very experienced ortho. There are files you can look at and lots of good info on the group site. My gut told me that our 1st ped was full of it too. They kept saying, "don't worry. It will round out as she sits up more" I finally thought...BULL. Our new ped is awesome and diagnosed Kennedy's tort and plagio immediately. Don't beat yourself up...it is a common thing here. You really are not too late from what I understand. THere is a chat tonight...log in, you might get some good advise there. Christyamks1027 <amks1027@...> wrote: Thanks for the quick response! Guest guest
Hi, I'm in about the same boat as you. My son Aidan is 9 months and will be 10 months at the end of the month. Hopefully in the next few weeks my son will be cast and we'll hopefully get the Starband in a month. I've only heard good things about the results. Good Luck!! Guest guest
Hi There, My daughter, Tatijana, who is now 5 was in a DOC band about 4 years ago. She didn't start treatment until she was 19 months old and graduated from the band at 21 months old. She had amazing results for getting started with the band at a late age. Hope this helps. Johanna mommy to Tatijana DOC grad 05/01 and lyse 5 1/2 months old maybe soon to be banded as well. >From: "amks1027" <amks1027@...> >Reply-Plagiocephaly >Plagiocephaly >Subject: just diagnosed >Date: Tue, 18 Jan 2005 02:42:17 -0000 > > > >Hi, we were just told that our 10 month old needs a band. everytime >I asked my pediatrician about her flat spot he just dismissed it >as "no big deal, just cosmetic". Guest guest
Welcome to the group I saw that Johanna emailed you about her daughter's success at 19months even. The earlier you band, the better, but starting at 11months can still bring much correction. Guest guest
Well some peds just don't realize how far bands have come in the past 6 years with the introduction of the DOC band and subsiquently the STARband and Hangar bands. The passive style helmet used to be all that was available and it works best in young infants. So by 10 months it would be questionable if your daughter would see improvement in a passive style. However, the "active" bands work in children up to 24 months (DOC band) or 18 months (STAR - I'm not sure on Hangar). So at her age yes it will work. We have lots of success stories with older infants. Where are you located? Do you know where you might go for the band? Maybe we have someone who has used them. Average treatment time depends on many factors, age, severity, and growth. If she is mild/moderate (under 10 mm asymmetry) and has good growth spurts maybe 4 months. However, this is pure speculation and guessing Keep us posted. mom to na DOC Grad 2/04 Tort Resolved South Carolina www.thefilyaws.com amks1027 <amks1027@...> wrote: Hi, we were just told that our 10 month old needs a band. everytime I asked my pediatrician about her flat spot he just dismissed it as "no big deal, just cosmetic". Guest guest
Hi, and welcome to the group. I am sorry your first pede was so cavalier about your child's plagio. It's very frustrating. And the one who said bands don't work is a putz. Although, as said, maybe he was referring to a passive band, and she already explained the difference between active and passive. Your dd should still be able to get good correction from an active band. Please let us know how it goes at the plastic surgeon's appt. Guest guest
Hi, Welcome to the group. I see you already received many helpful replies that let you know to expect results even at an older age with an active band. I just wanted to write to say that it is so discouraging to hear that some pediatricians are still blowing off concerns that parents have about their babies' headshape. I am so relieved that you did go to a new pediatrician that responsibly noted your daughter's plagiocephaly. Please keep us posted on her treatment progress! Guest guest
Welcome ,.......This is a great place to be! I look forward to getting to know you. I hope the Plaquenil works for you, it takes 4-6 weeks to start working, so just give it time. Make sure you get your vision checked every 6 months, it does cause eye problems at times. When I was taking it, I had a lot of vision problems. Good luck, and keep us posted, Tawny

Guest guest
Hi - Welcome to the group. You have come to the right place for support, and information. RA can definately come with or without a positive RA factor, but it sure is harder to dx without the blood work coming out positive. Mine was positive as well, so we started tx right away, which has been so lucky for me in the long run. Aggressive and early treatment is the way to go with RA. Yes, quite often we have both RA and fibro. For me the RA came first, and the fibro followed about three years later. I have had RA for 8 years and when first dx I was also put on Plaquenil. That did really well for me, with Motrin, for the first two years, until the RA became progressive again and I had to switch meds. I hope that it helps you as much as it did me:) blessings - Kathe
Guest guest
I have been recently diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and have been in constant pain for more than 12 weeks. I have recently seen a rheumatologist and he would like to start me on Methotrexate. I am currently on prednisone as well as vicodin for the pain. These however all not helping me function normally. I am also on cymbalta for my depression I am feeling for not being able to move or even dress myself. I have sleeping downstairs for December because climbing stairs is very painful. I sometimes wish I would die just because I am tires of people having to help me every day. If it were not for my fiancé I would be lost right now she does so much for me, I sometimes feel she will leave me because she will grow tired of my condition. But deep down I know she will always be there for me, and she just wants me to get better. I have been out of work since December due to the fact that I am unable to drive and walk without feeling a constant pain in all my joints. I am also very tired all the time and sleep any chance I get. Is taking the Methotrexate worth the side effects? I am a 34 year old male by the way. I found this forum site just researching the internet the other day and everyone on here sounds very helpful and caring. I have also been having headaches and a slight sore throat for the past couple of months as well. I would like to thank everyone in advance for reading my post and letting me get my feelings and worries out in this post. Thank You,
