i hope you're kidding. i'm certainly not rich. but i put my health on the

backburner when mom needed me, and now it's my turn. she left me enough

that i can pamper myself, and get my health in decent shape, and that's why

i'm ordering. i just figure going for 4 years without a salary gives me

that pampering at this point.

and when i get my BS so it's not going like a yoyo, and my weight and my

mental health to a point that everything is in normal range, then i'll take

to the kitchen. but right now, i need help, and thank god, i have some.

Sure ;-) You deserve it! I'm just saying no matter how much I want or deserve

it, I'm outta luck if it costs money. All my disability goes for fixed

expenses. The good news is that I FINALLY own my farm ;-) I paid off the

mortgage last October ;-)

Hello wsm311@...,

In reference to your comment:

ð This brings me to my biggest question. Why do people

ð follow the diabetes assoc. diet? All the bread,

ð potatoes, grain stuff and crackers don't seem to be

ð good for diabetics. I suspect grains are a category of

ð foods we should do without. Eskimos don't eat grain,

ð nomads must not have eaten much. Folks can easily

ð live without them. Are they on the diet because people

ð are used to eating grain products and it might be hard

ð to change?

because they can't think for themselves, because their dr's and the ADA told

them to, and because its easier to eat the way they always did, and just take

drugs..... (for them)

I'm also on SSD, and i follow atkins, its hard at first to get on the

induction, but after you do it for a few days your appetite is very low to

gone, and you will be fine....

I'll stay on induction or close to it, if i can tolerate it till i've lost

quite a bit, maybe all my wt, lol if ever i could :(

and then my goal is to change over to maintance of atkins.

I do a few things with substitutes, i don't mind splenda at all...i do drink

diet sparkling flavored artifically sweetned waters

I've tried the atkins bars but they seem to stall my wt loss.

I haven't read any Atkins books yet....it has only been 10 days since I found

out I am diabetic. I have borrowed armloads of diabetes books, but all the

Atkins ones were checked out. So far I've only gotten bits and pieces of info

from the net. If you were me, what stuff would you read first?

wendy. first i just wanna say that i hope i did not come off like some

spoiled little brat rich kid. i'm not. i just know that with myself, if i

don't buy it, i won't fix it. i got used to ordering out when mom was sick

because i just could not leave her alone long enough to fix anything. and

maybe it's post-meno, or diabetes, or just exhaustion still, but i don't feel

like doing anything other than putting something on the little grill, or

baking quickly. if it takes more than 2 minutes, then i shun it. so, in

order that i get my ducks in a row, i'm buying stuff. and i figure in a

month or so, i will feel better, and maybe feel like cooking, exercising and

all that good stuff.

i've been on this list a while, but not doing what i needed. but i stick

pretty much to low carb. i order thin crust pizza some, and actually have

not tested, so i need to do that. but other than that, i eat meat and

vegies for dinner; a salad for lunch; and sausage and fruit for breakfast.

i'm going to change that and have sausage/bacon and eggs for breakfast and

see.

yesterday my BS went way low (like 60 something), and i wondered if maybe i

was having too little something in my diet. i did find that for me, rice

and potatoes were not too good. and oatmeal spiked me.

i love splenda. and i'm a sugar kinda gal. i think after the initial

" Blech " , i've gotten so the diet drinks (Dr. Pepper, Coke) are fine. i

don't care much for diet ginger ale and there was anothre that made me barf.

i hate the diet fruits in a can, but i love fresh strawberries. i don't

like greens, but adore broccoli, green beans, squash and mushrooms. i was

eating onions with every meal until someone here said to get rid of some of

the onions.

i'm starting tomorrow (too late for today) and writing down every prick, and

the food, and try one food at a time, and then figure out what works for me,

and what does not.

i think you are luckier than you know. your farm sounds great, and you have

heather. you have lots of good stuff growing there so that you can go out

and pick it and fix it. and you havve us!! pat

something about the natural sugars??? i'm eating a half onion right now

with my hot dog. and yep, i love Vidalias but i'll take any onion. i used

to say that about potatoes, but not now. lol i'm gonna eat just my hot

dog and vegies (no sweets or bad stuff) and then test in 1 hour, and 2 hrs

(and right before i eat) to see what it does. if i spike any, i'll check

the next time without onions. pat

IMHO, people follow it because their docs recommend it. And docs recommend

it because the ADA recommends it. And, 'scuse me for being cynical, but the

prime financial supporters of the ADA are the drug companies and major cereal

manufacturers. From this, one could deduce that the ADA is directing their

research $$ into new pills for diabetes...and keeping BGs high (by eating

grain products) creates more markets for pill makers.

No one is going to get rich from diabetics eating a lowcarb diet (except

maybe the lowcarb food manufacturers, smile).

What's wrong with onions? Well, one cup of cooked (boiled is how they're

listed at the USDA site) has 21.315 carbs. That's a lot of carbs. Well, you

can subtract 2.940 grams of fiber from it, smile.

The USDA website is easy to use and lists almost everything ...the URL is

http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/cgi-bin/list_nut.pl

I find it invaluable.

Yup...I can't say it often enough....the ADA diabetic diet is DUMB!!!!! I

wish I had a bg meter when I was in the hospital. My readings were probably

really high!

After 30+ years of docs being mostly idiots, I learned to follow my instincts

and ignore them when necessary. They have almost killed me more times than I

can count.

Some of the best.... I had 12 blood transfusions after the birth of .

I started bleeding again 3 weeks after having my daughter. The ER doc said I

was just having my period and sent me home, despite the fact I soaked through

6 hotel towels on the way in the ambulance. The next day I was again rushed

to the hospital in an ambulance. I had lost half of my blood. They couldn't

believe I was still alive.

------------------------------

I was bleeding intestinally and in tons of pain. The doc was ignoring me. I

sat on his steps and refused to move until he did something to help me. He

called an ambulance. I spent 11 days at Dartmoth-Hitchcock

hospital....supposedly a good one. At first they did lots of tests. Couldn't

find anything. The second half of my stay, they called in the shrinks who

decided I grew up in a dysfunctional family and that's what made me ill. When

I got out, I went to an old country doc. He poked my belly, said I needed my

appendix out. Turns out the darn thing had ruptured awhile back, and had

formed a cyst around itself. I was sick from the peritonitis!!

------------------------------

My regular doc nowdays is great ;-) Still, we disagree from time to time. A

couple of years ago I was downing 30+ pills a day. I told him I was going to

quit them all cold turkey. He had a fit. After a couple of weeks I felt MUCH

better. Later he admitted I was right to do it ;-)

i had an idiot, too, wendy. he said " well, you have diabetes " and walked

out. period. no pamphlets, no nothing. did i say 'former doctor'--i

should have.

mom had a good one. we went 6-7 times and told him her leg was hurting and

she would cry at nite. he called her a baby pretty much. i told him she

never complained. well, she had a horrible staph infection, and was

hospitalized for a month. this was the only time EVER in over 40 hospital

stays that the hospital fought to keep her. they were scared i would sue

(and good thing, because i still plan on stirring up some trouble, and plan

on taking that stupid, arrogant *ss of a doctor/surgeon to task. this

jack*ss had the nerve to say " i'm a surgeon, and you weave baskets??? "

well, yes, but even if i'll never win, he will remember me. for a very,

very long time. lol i lvoe them; i hate them. i adore the one i have

now, and mom had a few that were very, very special. but for the most part,

i would not waste my $$$ on a postage stamp to mail them to hell. pat

Even my good doc did this to me. I'm sure he figured I would study up on

diabetes just like I do for all my other diseases. By asking around, I hooked

up with a dietician, diabetes counsellor and diabetes educator. The doc never

said a word.

I went to two libraries and borrowed every book on diabetes. I had a 2 hour

appointment with the diabetes educator and I have spent days searching the

net. The only time I followed the ADA diet was in the hospital, against my

will. I soon realized that diet was way too high in carbs.

I'm glad I found this and other diabetes groups. I have learned both what to

do and what NOT to do from folk's experience.
