Guest guest
i go back to doctor in a week or so. i think i will ask him for the name of a diabetes educator. maybe it's because doctors really don't know that much about it. and the first doctor handed me the chart put out by ADA. when i returned, i told him i had found this list and it was most informative. he said " get your butt up from the sstupid computer and walk. " i did. out of his door and never returned. pat > > I'm glad I found this and other diabetes groups. Guest guest
If you go to town and buy hardcover it'll cost you around $15-25 (I don't remember what the hardback price is at this point)...but you can order paperback from Bayer and it'll cost only $8 plus shipping. this is how to do it: (I think the offer is still good)... Vicki << The book is called " D. Bernstein's Diabetes Solutions " by K. Bernstein, M.D. It's available in hardback and paperback but the paperback is only available from Bayer. Call Bayer direct at 1- and request Part #0441445. Their ordering lines are open 8 am - 5 pm eastern standard time. They take Visa or MasterCard. << In a message dated 06/11/2002 6:40:59 PM US Mountain Standard Time, wsm311@... writes: > I did read all I could of his stuff online. Guest guest
Good for you, Pat. Docs who make patients feel guilty (and give BAD advice) deserve to be walked out on! Guest guest
I know what you mean! Even after calling for the Dietician every single day her coming to my room to discuss the meal problems, I still got the same garbage as you. I think I got broccoli every single day and I had written all over my menu that I was allergic to it. The only thing they paid any attention to was the fact that I'm lactose intolerant. I was served either noodles, rice, or potatoes every day. Thank goodness they sent a very small salad for lunch and dinner almost every day so at least I didn't starve to death but I lost 18 lbs. In 8 days. Since I refused to eat what they sent, they started sending me a can of Choice which is supposed to be a meal in a can and fairly low in carbs. Evidently they pay no attention to what is written on the menus or to what the dietician says. They don't even have a clue what we're supposed to eat or even are able to eat. The worst part is they don't give a flip! Tootie (glad to be home and get some decent food) " diabetic meal " ? The meals in the hospital were marked diabetic... Hmmmm....breakfast of oatmeal, funny eggs, 1/2 English muffin, fake jelly, no fat milk Lunch seafood roll, chicken noodle soup, carrots, juice Supper shepherd's pie with sweet potatoes on the side, milk, juice

Fuss at the dietician, threaten a lawsuit, whatever, but get standard meals. We are much more likely to get some food we can eat that way -- especially if we restrict our carbs. Also, don't let them take away your blood sugar meter. This also might take some fussing. Hospitals generally do not like " self treating, " but they will not check blood sugar levels often enough and probably will not tell you the results of their tests on a timely basis. Appendix B of Dr. Bernstein's book is titled " Don't Permit Hospitalization to Impair Your Blood Sugar Control. " But this is not online at his web site, so get the book if you haven't already. It is very helpful. Tom the Actuary
