Should I meet w/ my Dr. or suck it up?

I am 7 months pregnant and I have RA. I'm scared to call my Rheumy

about the problems I'm having, because I really want to just hold out

until after the baby is born, because I don't want the meds to effect

her. At the same time, I don't want damage done to my body. My neck has

hurt the entire pregnancy, and now it's so stiff and sore. It hurts to

turn it when I drive. This morning I woke up w/ a black and blue and

swollen knuckle. I wish I was in full remission!!!

If you were in my situation, would you wait it out 7 more weeks, or go

get help now?

Inflammation isn't good for you, and it isn't good for the baby either. All

those cytokines flow through her blood too. Call and go in. You're going to

need your energy when she's born and starting behind the 8 ball is no way to

take on new motherhood. You know we actually are in the same situation (7 mos

pg!) and I support you taking whatever drugs you need to feel better that are

thought to be safe in pg. hugs, Kate F

As a mother of three....I would WAIT....7 weeks is not really long in

YOUR life (although it may seem in right now)

BUT, for the developing BABY....seven weeks is SO important :)

If you can give your baby those seven weeks medication-free...it will

matter for the rest of his/her life !

Best of Luck...and maybe things will improve on their own....labor

and delivery might be easy...and please for the

sake of your baby...DO breastfeed !! Since there may a genetic

component to RA...your child needs all the help

he/she can get to counteract that predisposition...and exclusive

breastfeeding for the first six months and continuing

to breastfeed for at least two years...will do SO much good for this

baby's health !

best of luck

I was thinking about you this am and hoping you're feeling a bit better. My

thought on RA is that it's a disease you have to fight from the front, not from

the rear. When you're chasing inflammation, it can be hard to get it stamped

down w/o a shload of steriods. If you're able to work with your doc and get on

a drug to lower the inflammation you'll be in much better shape for delivery and

the post partum period. Remember you can always call the OTIS counselors to

discuss the safety of any drug in pregnancy - not just RA ones. Hang in there.

I'm taking Enbrel monthly now and it seems to be really helpful. Otherwise how

are you feeling? I have no waist anymore and I've reached the

hard-to-flip-over-in-bed stage. My hubby has started biking and walking at

lunch time and he's getting in great shape. I on the other hand am approaching

whale status!!!

Hi, Kate

As usual...you have good thoughts and express them well :)

My own suggestion to avoid the rheumatologist now...and proceed thru

and onto exclusive breastfeeding for at least six months is that many

if not all physicians have little or no

education in lactation...and they are quick in the words of one

breastfeeding physician expert to " sacrifice

breastfeeding on the altar of their own lack of knowledge "

<G>....instead of researching medications to seek

those compatible with breastfeeding....if their own wife gave

artificial baby milk (forumula) to their own baby,

a doc is likely to (incorrectly) think that formula will be " good

enough " for someone else's baby...and that is

not the case :) Would any of us give cow's blood to our child who

needed a blood transfusion ? I doubt it !

Then, why we any mother consider giving cow's milk to our human babies ? ?

stepping down off soapbox :)

Hi , I don't see medication and breastfeeding as mutually exclusive. I

plan to breastfeed this baby while taking prednisone and Enbrel. Since he/she

will have had 20-30 exposures to Enbrel in utero, I don't think the small amount

of drug that would pass into breastmilk (and be destroyed by gastric juices

anyway) is harmful. That's my call though and my doctors are supportive. I

think if you look up Enbrel and pred in Hale's book on lactation and medication,

both are thought to be safe. Other women might feel differently of course, and

Missy will have to make her own decision. Keep in mind that flares after

delivery can be pretty tough. I struggled with post partum anxiety (in large

part due to a traumatic delivery + my struggle to breastfeed when I had low/no

supply) when my son was born that had me climbing the walls. I can't imagine

combining the post partum weeks with an RA flare - yikes. And the majority of

women do have a flare that is

pretty fierce as the immune system resets itself after the body has carried a

child. It's a tough call regardless. I hope that more women registering with

OTIS will help guide evidence-based decision making for women and their docs.

Cheers,

Kate

Hi Kate~

I FULLY agree with ! Are you on any kind of Meds? With my last 3 pregs

& BFeeding I was on 5-10mgs of prednisone, 10 for really bad flare ups. And

everyone turned out ok and it got me through. Good luck!

education in lactation...and they are quick in the words of one

breastfeeding physician expert to " sacrifice

breastfeeding on the altar of their own lack of knowledge "

<G>....instead of researching medications to seek

those compatible with breastfeeding....if their own wife gave

artificial baby milk (forumula) to their own baby,

a doc is likely to (incorrectly) think that formula will be " good

enough " for someone else's baby...and that is

not the case :) Would any of us give cow's blood to our child who

needed a blood transfusion ? I doubt it !

Then, why we any mother consider giving cow's milk to our human babies ? ?

stepping down off soapbox :)
