Guest guest
Hi Kami! I have been on Plaquenil for a little over two years. My rheumatologist sent me to my opthamologist before I even began the medication to get a baseline reading. I could not get my script until I passed this exam. I go every 6 months for a retinal exam. So far I have not had any problems which is really good! My plaquenil took about 6 months to really work and we just added the Sulfasalazine a little under a year now. --- ~ Kami ~ <kamilleon@...> wrote: > I have been on Plaquenil 3 months and FAILED my > visual field test on my left eye, the same eye which > I had Scleritis. Guest guest
My baseline and the one I had done today are DRASTICALLY different. Also the ophthalmologist noted that he did not see this spots at my last exam which was 4 days after I started Plaquenil. He did state that this may not be from the Plaquenil but that I may have to go off it because even if it IS something else, any damage that the Plaquenil does is not reversible..... Ugh... I am SO frustrated now I could SCREAM! Nothing is ever easy! *~ Kami ~* Re: [ ] Plaquenil Retinopathy Hi Kami! I have been on Plaquenil for a little over two years. Guest guest
Kami, I have been on plaquenil for 3 years (I think) and I haven't had any problems visually. I saw an opthalmologist when I first started the medication and haven't been back since. (I know I need to go, but I have been putting it off). I hope things are better when you see the retina doc again. > > I have been on Plaquenil 3 months and FAILED my visual field test on my left eye, the same eye which I had Scleritis. Guest guest
Hi Kami. My husband is an ophthamologist, and in his 20 years of practice he has never had to advise someone to stop plaquenil -- he thinks its a pretty benign medication usually. That's why he supported my taking it for my RA. But it does affect some folks -- we know that - - sorry if you're one of those few. Guest guest
Thanks, Bonnie. As of right now, I have some sort of maculopathy/retinopathy but he is not sure it is the Plaquenil because Plaquenil retinopathy is generally in a bulls-eye pattern. What I have is some discoloration of the macula that was not there when I was last dilated in December. That, and the fact I failed my visual field test (left eye) lead him to believe something is going on in my left eye only. I have a feeling I will be going off the Plaquenil not because of the Plaquenil causing whatever this is..... but in order to prevent the possibility of any further damage that could be caused by the Plaquenil. Also, I got new glasses in December and commented to my optometrist a few weeks ago during my daughters exam that I thought perhaps my vision had changed already. He asked me if I wanted another exam and I said no because I knew I was going to see the ophthalmologist in a few weeks.... *sigh* I am still reeling over all of this..... It is painfully obvious when I use my only my left eye! I can't see properly! I guess my right has been compensating for the left!!!!! WAHHH! *~ Kami ~* [ ] Re: Plaquenil Retinopathy Hi Kami. Guest guest
So sorry, Kami. I hope your ophthalmologist can figure out what's happening. Please let us know. We have had a few reports from people in the group who had to discontinue Plaquenil because it was affecting their vision. Guest guest
I just had to chime in here... a month or so after starting hydroxychloriquine I noticed a very big difference in my eyesight. My eye doctor was alarmed, but isn't sure either if it is the drug. I have had trouble seeing for months. I am supposed to go back next week for another check. My vision is so blurred now I cannot read the road signs. I hope you find out soon what is going on. Good luck... > > I have been on Plaquenil 3 months and FAILED my visual field test on my left eye, the same eye which I had Scleritis. Guest guest
Thank you for replying! Do you notice it worse in one eye than the other? When I use my eyes together, it is simply blurry, esp small print and I have trouble with blues/greens. When I close my right eye and use the left it is really bad.... I have probably spent too much time thinking about this over the past few days but the good news is...it has taken my mind off ho much my hands have been hurting! LOL *~ Kami ~* [ ] Re: Plaquenil Retinopathy I just had to chime in here... a month or so after starting hydroxychloriquine I noticed a very big difference in my eyesight. Guest guest
Hi Kami: I don't know if this helps but, I have been on prednisone for over 5 1/2 years, and recently had cataracts removed. They were caused by so many years on steroids. My left eye was the worst, had trouble reading, and when I went to the Opthamol. Dr. I couldn't even read the BIG E! And my right eye was doing all the work! These are different cataracts then the elderly get. I had one eye done on a Thurs., and had the other eye done a week later. My eyes are great, I don't need glasses to drive etc., and just buy an over the counter reading glasses. I was worried sick when I couldn't read, as I am an avid reader. I thought " oh no, on top of R.A. I am losing my eyesight. I was scared to death to have my eyes checked out. My eye. dr. said this is a side effect of steroids, and I was so relieved it could be correted. It was a simple procedure, short recovery, and my eyes are perfect now. I had this done last October. I hope this helps you as I really worried myself sick. I wish you good luck when you have your eyes checked. God Bless you, and I will pray all goes well for you.
