Subject: Thoughts

Still as a nation we are glued to the television it is almost as though we are mesmerised, not from a macabre point of view but because it feels like something you must do. The American Embassy in London as you can imagine is the focus for all Americans living over here for the time being,a book of condolences is being opened today there. It is like so many Americans and United Kingdom feel so bereft, it must be really hard for the Americans over here because after such a dreadful occurrence naturally you would want to be at home in your own country.

About 100 Britons are thought to have perished, along with many other nationalities. We have been impressed by the indomitable spirit of the people of New York and Washington, they are showing the same Bulldog spirit as is seen here in times of trouble. Heartening views almost of people lining the streets to applaud the valiant efforts of the rescuers. Many rescuers we already know have paid the ultimate sacrifice with their own lives.

We to silently applaud the ordinary people in the street, who selflessly have given blood , opened there homes, donated food and drinks for the rescuers. As we view the pictures of the rescue operation we see the actual enormity of the task in hand, the huge pile of rubble, the poignant remainder of peoples possessions strew about, the shoes, make up, so very sad, none of us will be able to forget these scenes for many a long while.

As the speeches are made by the powers that be, that again sets off another train of thought, take for instance the question of whether an attack will eventually be made on Afghanistan, we know that in the past this has not been successful, by USA, United Kingdom nor USSR, so obviously a great deal of thought has to be given as to what is eventually decided. Afghanistan is a very hostile environment, I mean the country itself, geographically I am not referring to the political set up, but the sheer difficulty of the actual country.

We hear this morning that the CIA and FBI have an almost complete list of terrorists involved and pieces of the jigsaw are falling into place now, so things may be decided before to long. Sadly the foreign office in London have just upped the number of Britons thought to have perished to 500, a mere splash compared to the number of people lost in the USA but none the less very precious and loved to their families and friends here, we cannot even comprehend it.

On Friday night a service will be held in London, in fact services are to be held all over the country. The firemen here in York are to hold fund raising events to help their fellow firemen in New York, everyone wants to do their bit, whether donate blood, time expertise or whatever they can, I am sure that is magnified throughout Europe, Australia and New Zealand, elsewhere too I should imagine, we know no amount of help or money donated can bring these dearly loved people back again, but it is the only way we know of showing how much we care, how much it matters
