Guest guest
Read it, it is a very restrictive diet but then again how well do you want to control your diabetes. It is also very personalized in that you need to check you BS frequently to determine how YOUR body reacts do different levels of carbs. Mac and cheese with peas is a great big NO NO for me. I have had several patients come through the back do to see me because they could not control their BS on the conventional diabetic diet. It is not for everyone. Guest guest
Thanks - the person who contacted me said she eats 24 grams of CHO/day but doesn't take fiber CHO into account. Very restrictive diet. Was looking for a " holistic nutritionist. Guest guest
That is a bit low even for Dr Berrnstein. I usually don't give a CHO level but insist that there have to have a none starch vegetable at every meal. Most find things like onions, carrots etc a little too high in CHO. This goes back to the Glycemic Index. Interestingly it does have some value in picking what they might want to eat. If I make any recommendation of a CHO number it is 1 gm per kg of desired weight NOT nessarily what they think it should be but somewhere between IBW and where they are now. You can successfully modify it for cardiac restrictions, gets a little strange but doable. Most like the fact that their insulin use goes down with some weight. Not the rapid weight loss you might think. Most really like that the next time they go to the Dr. their insulin is not increased! I also give out the signs & symptoms of low BS and stress the need for increase monitoring and contact with their MD do to decreased or more stable BS. It works for some but it is a little more work to follow.
