we can only hope s/he would never get any RD to " proofread " it. Obviously, they

have no clue of the role of RD in menu planning. Who do I really blame in

that???????

A friend of mine forwarded me this posting from Craig's List. I hope she wasn't

seriously thinking I would be interested. If I wasn't so busy I'd think of

responding and ask...really? even if it's $30 an hour it's a rip.

We have a 30 day menu that needs to be looked over by a Registered

Dietician - RD. It is a pretty standard menu and just needs some

proofreading.

But a " starving " RD may consider it hoping to increase her/his visibility

and future job contacts. Which brings up another issue - how many times in

our career have we been asked to do " freebie " talks??

All the time:) BTW, These Institutions have to have a RD sign off on

their menus, the menus must be posted but we have no authority to be

sure they follow they menus or prepare the foods correctly or make the

right substitutions. The institutions then follow the menus for a few

weeks before the state or VA inspections! RDs need more authority!

I charged $3000 to do the local senior center menu editing which was only $500

over the nutritionist (not an RD) who did the menus that failed inspection. You

get what you pay for.

Although $30/hr is not a fee I accept now, everyone has to start somewhere,

and it's not usually at the top unless they inherit a business or the

throne. Many companies, my own past company included, start clinical RDs at

$30 - $35 per hour non-exempt w full benefits. The money has to come from

somewhere and since our professional organization has not been instrumental

in helping legislate reimbursement for our services, that's our reality.

Each of us, professionally and through our own efforts, can market

ourselves, become experts in our field, produce positive outcomes, and then

demand and receive higher fees. Nobody has to be " hungry " to accept $30/hr.

But 's comments are very true. It's one way to put yourselves out there

and become known, or learn a new specialty.

I left a 10 year position as a VP Dec 2010. I accepted 8 hours per month in

a " free " clinic for hispanics at $35/hr. I did an excellent job, provided

an essential service to a population that few are able or willing to

service, and when my schedule got full, I resigned and moved on to a more

acceptable wage contract. It's not embarrassing, it's not demeaning; it's

honest work for honest pay. I'm not entry level, I'm at almost the end of my

career bc one of these days my body or my brain will stop working as well as

they both do now. If I work again as a VP in the same line of work I would

expect the same or more pay as I received when I left that position in

December. But if I start anything new that I'm not as familiar with, or

known for having succeeded in, I will definitely accept the reimbursement

offered until I've proven myself.

Aside from that, what's there to reviewing and approving menus? That ad is

not very specific, it's not for menu planning or recipe development, so

someone will surely investigate it and find out more, and maybe even do it.

Why waste energy getting mad and defensive? Instead, campaign for our

reimbursement, advertise our skills and benefits.

I'm still reading ads on-line for acute hospitals chains in Southern CA for

a starting salary for clinical RDs at $23.50/hr. Now, THAT's a damn shame!!!

I was talking about this with a colleague today. Didn't the childhood

obesity guidelines or statement from ADA include that RDs should " volunteer "

our time to schools to help combat childhood obesity?

Why isn't the American Medical Association asking MDs to volunteer too?

That is so sad. And I bet a number of them have an advanced degree.  $39K per

year?

My original email was referencing a company offering a $30 fee TOTAL not per

hour to do the work which essentially looks like it would be hours of work - IF

someone were to do a good job. I was also looking at it from the self employed

perspective.

I guess one of my points was that there are those out there offering such an

absurdly low fee to a professional such as an RD. But looking at their

perspective....I suppose $30 might seem like a lot to someone making $10 or $15

per hour.  But then if someone does accept the work - for the experience - yes,

great experience for him/her but it only KEEPS our profession at the low end of

the salary spectrum.

Anyway...yes we all start somewhere. And I need to add that clinical IS

different in which it's very difficult to compare to the self employed. As an

employee you have benefits, health care, paid office space - you don't have to

buy all of your own office equipment, supplies, computer, printer...etc etc. No

overhead. Big difference.

I'm really sorry to say this, but working over 20 yrs somewhere and making less

than $60K WITH the education we have?  If you LOVE what you do then GREAT!

Then it's likely worth it. But I also don't think it helps us overall in the

long run.

I would love to be " insulted " at $30-35/hr. with benefits. I have been a

dietitian for over 25 years and the only time I have made that was as an

independent consultant with no benefits. The top of the market where I live is

$24-26/hr plus benefits with experience. Newbies get $19-21/hr.

As for the menus.. Years ago I was asked to " just sign " an ALF menu where a

typical meal was: BLT; potato chips; jello; juice (unlikely to be 100%). I told

them what needed to be done to correct the menus (basically start over and what

the requirements were) and refused to sign them. They asked why I couldn't just

sign them or rewrite them. They were told what it would cost if I wrote them. I

never heard from them again. In this state, if you sign menus you have to

provide a copy of your registration and license. Do you really want to give

those out to just any one for $30?

You can bet you bottom dollar our competition is not volunteering. If anything

they are trying to get in on the bottom floor of the gravy boat and their

" organizations " are telling them how to.

, I agree with every one of your points. Well taken. No matter if

self-employed or employed, we just don’t get the pay we are educated for.

I was just ask to do a volunteer presentation for the Atlanta Ballet!

I am asked to volunteer all the time! My charge is $175.00 for first

hour and $50.00 for my travel time! If I am going to volunteer, it

shall be for the food bank or habitat for humanity to do the same work

as all the other volunteers:)
