This is how my RA doc did my treatment also. I just started Humira after being

on MTX alone for the past 3 yrs. So now I take 5 mtx a week and the Humira shot

once every 2 weeks. From what I understand MTX is always the start and then from

there they see how it works. My doc is talking taking me off the MTX and just on

the humira since he says it is helping, of course I will tell ya different, but

then it depends on what the weather is like. Now that the himidtiy has gotten up

again I fell like crud all the time

[ ] Newly diagnosed and starting meds this week

Hi Everyone,

I had my appointment yesterday with my Rheumatologist to discuss

treatment for my RA. She is having me start methotrexate (6 pills

once a week) along with 1 mg of folic acid everyday for the next four

weeks. Then I go back to her and if I'm doing ok on the methotrexate

she will add plaquenil. She didn't want to start me on both together

in case I had an allergic reaction, she wouldn't know which drug

caused it. She said I should start feeling better around week 3 of

the methotrexate. I'm planning on starting the pills this Thursday.

I hope they don't make me sick!

She also prescribed pain meds to take at night and in the morning

which is when I have the most pain. She did not want me to take

prednisone because it would cause my diabetes to be harder to

control. She also did not prescribe NSAIDS at this time. Is that

uncommom? I always assumed that NSAIDS were part of the overall

treatment.

I think it is odd she did not start you on an NSAID. You have several weeks

before the MTX kicks in should be controlled. As far as I know they are not

contraindicated in diabetics, such as prednisone is. I know my son's blood

glucose level goes through the roof when he has to take prednisone. He is a

type 1 diabetic, a typical 12 year old boy, and badly allergic to poison ivy :)

I don't envy you for having to take 6 MTX pills! My body will not allow any

more than 3, even with extra folic acid on board. Even with three I am

nauseated for 3 days afterwards. However, for whatever reason it seems to relax

me. If I get desperate I may have to switch to injectable, but I hate giving

needles unless I really need to. Just between you, I and the group I really

don't think it helps me.

There is probably a concern with damage to the liver or maybe something else I

am missing. I am on MTX, pred., and Lodine currently and have no problems with

my blood profiles. Maybe if you are at risk for such things doctors shy away

from it. At the height of all my medication I was on MTX, DayPro, prednisone,

plaquenil, Arava, percocet, and didronel. Vioxx was played around with

somewhere in there as well. Something was bothering my red blood cells, but it

obviously was not the DayPro or MTX. I have always been on MTX and a NSAID,

regardless of my doctors.
