I think it is wretched as well. I have a friend (not a dietitian, but

honestly eats healthier than i do...whoops) that put is in EVERYTHING. Then

she tries to make me choke down her concoctions.

I'm getting the heebie jeebies just thinking about it.

I do let my patients know about the option, but I'm very honest about the

taste :) I also give them a little talk about trying to get away

form needing things to be so sweet/salty in the first place, actually

tasting their food withou masking it- yadda, yadda, yadda...

I don't like it either. If I must use an artificial sweetner, I'll use Splenda.

I don't recommend any artificial sweeteners. BUT, first I ask the client why

they are using it. This usually starts a very heated and interesting lesson

plan.

Stevia personally is not on my list of suggested sweeteners for those who insist

on using one.

I tell them to try various sweeteners and chose the one they like---  they

could be eating something a lot worse than 1 packet of sweetner a day

I think it depends on the brand also, . I agree that some stevia is

horrible. Others I've found quite palatable.

When I tried an actual stevia leaf, I didn't think it was too bad. Some of

the liquid stevia uses grapefruit extract - I'm not thrilled about some of

them.

Other liquids, a few drops sweeten just enough without being " sweet. "

I've been thinking of growing my own this year. Not sure how a diced up

leaf would sweeten tea and such. I just keep forgetting to order some seeds.

But at least in this form it's 100% natural.

Wow! Growing your own sweetener! That's impressive. However, I don't think I

would like floating leaves in my morning cereal. You will have to let us know

how it turns out.

I think I will stick with Splenda. I only use it for Iced Tea & cereal anyway.

I have tried dried stevia leaves in tea. I went to a tea sampling bar in

Seattle and the girl brewed the tea with the stevia leaves. Unfortunately,

it, like its powdered version, has a somewhat licorice flavor. Personally,

I think it interfered with the flavor of the tea. It might work better in

something stronger such as coffee.

When I tried an actual stevia leaf, I didn't think it was too bad. Some of

Other liquids, a few drops sweeten just enough without being " sweet. "

I've been thinking of growing my own this year. Not sure how a diced up

Stevia is 300 times sweeter than sugar. Thus, a small amount is best. The

powders have a horrible after taste while Jan is correct, the grapefruit extract

skews the flavor. I always use and recommend either the actual leaf ( very small

piece) or the pure liquid form. If using the leaf, I recommend to tear off a

very small piece and taste it. Then decide how much to use. If using the drops,

I recommend taking 1 drop to the fingertip and tasting in order to decide how

much to use.

Essentially only 1-3 drops is enough to sweeten in comparison to 1 packet/tsp

of sugar.

My neighbor has a Stevia plant. I tasted the leaves and yes, there's

sweetness in them, but they're a disgusting sweetness, and toward the end

the aftertaste was that of LAMB meat (which I detest. I had to spit it out

and it made me nauseated. I actually had the sweetener samples and tasted

it before distributing to some patients that wanted to know more about it.

Wow! Growing your own sweetener! That's impressive. However, I don't think I

would like floating leaves in my morning cereal. You will have to let us

know how it turns out.

I think I will stick with Splenda. I only use it for Iced Tea & cereal

anyway.

Maybe that's why I didn't like the taste of the Stevia sweetener. I HATE lamb

too!
