Guest guest
Joy, my rheummy told me that it's because the MTX kills all the fast growing cells in your body, and the fastest growing cells are in the mouth. The folic acid should take care of these ulcers though. Happy New Year Pennie in Australia [ ] mouth sores Why does MTX cause mouth sores? Guest guest
American College of Rheumatology Patient Information Methotrexate excerpt: ************************************************************************** How it works Methotrexate interferes with several enzymes involved in the immune system. By blocking an enzyme in the body called dihydrofolate reductase, methotrexate hinders the production of a form of folic acid important for actively growing cells such as those comprising the skin, blood, gastrointestinal tissues and immune system. However, it is not entirely clear how methotrexate decreases the severity of arthritis. http://www.rheumatology.org/public/factsheets/methotrexate.asp *************************************************************************** Not an MD On Dec 27, 2007 2:39 PM, Joy <jhoorm01@...> wrote: > Why does MTX cause mouth sores? > Joy
Guest guest
I get the mouth sores too and I am on the MTX and folic acid as well. I find eating ice chips helps a lot! Not only does it help keep your mouth moist which can be so difficult for us, but it seems to make the sores heal quicker. Good luck. Guest guest
I don't know if the rheumatologist can prescribe it but wouldn't hurt to ask...When I was going through chemo my Oncologist Rx-ed something called " Magic Mouthwash #2 for mouth sores. It's a conbination of different things, Maylox and benzodine (?) numbing stuff anyways. It works really well. Guest guest
Dear Tracie: Eating ice chips can also be a sign of anemia. Very common among pregnant women. Folic acid is supposed to help with this, but you may want to check with your doctor.
Guest guest
Thanks, Yes I am very anemic. It runs with my RA. The worse my RA, the worse my anemia. It goes up and down. At times I really crave the ice chips, but they are not fattening and help my mouth so no harm done. Thanks again. Tracie --------------------------------- Never miss a thing. Make your homepage. Guest guest
I get Thrush (candida) from the MTX and am using a medication called Nystatin 100000. It works great! I think the MTX overkills the good bacteria in the mouth which causes the thrush and this replaces it. I also use Dannon Activa which has helped tremendously. I've been on the MTX for about 3 months now. Lab tests are normal so far. I go to Rumy doc today. Other than thrush, I have been getting " spells " where I begin to perspire profusely; my face gets flushed, and then feel anxious and nauseous. I haven't had this before and think it is also from the Methotrexate. I have RA and Fibro, along with asthma, migraine headaches and spine problems (degenerative disk disease with ruptured disks in both cervical and lumbar spine)....and spondylolysthesis (vertebrae are out of alignment in addition to the ruptured disks. Basically my body is a mess! I used the Duragesic patch (Fentynol) every 48 hours for pain and have percocet for any " break through " pain. I have to say that for 2 days, after Christmas, I felt GREAT! It was the very first time to feel good in a very long time...about 15 years! I'll keep you informed as to what the rhumy says!
