Guest guest
Really??? I have been a vegetarian (lacto-ovo) for five years and am in good health. I know many healthy vegans. There are so many falsehoods in that article I don't even know where to start! Cholesterol is an essential nutrient?? I don't have time to cover everything that is wrong with that article, but did you all even read it? > > yep, this is the late onset anorexia...middle age women declare > vegeterianism or in this case, veganism. > and they all hope to look like Freston. Guest guest
Shelby, I have to agree with you! I am not a vegetarian, but I used to get some referrals for people when I was a generalist dietitian for vegan counseling. We even had our own printed handout on how you can be healthy and be vegetarian and/or vegan, and this article definitely has many inaccuracies. It does take some work, possible B12 supplementation, and cosistency in certain food choices, but you can eat vegan and be healthy. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > http://www.jennette-turner.com/publications.cfm?id=17 > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > -- > > > Ortiz, MS, RD > > > *The FRUGAL Dietitian* <http://www.thefrugaldietitian.com> > > > Check out my blog: mixture of deals and > nutrition > > > Join me on Facebook <http://www.facebook.com/TheFrugalDietitian?ref=ts> > > > > > > Polo Shirt with your logo: $2.95 shipped Great > Father’s Day > > > Gift<http://thefrugaldietitian.com/?p=20750> > > > * " Nutrition is a Science, Not an Opinion > Survey " * > > > > > > > > > [Non-text portions of this message have been > removed] > > > > > > > > > > > > ------------------------------------ > > > > > >
Guest guest
I completely agree that there is " so many falsehoods in that article I don't even know where to start " Cholesterol is needed for hormones synthesis in the body. When I did my BSc in nutrition, many moons ago, one of my preceptors did a research among vegans and found them to have high cholesterol. When you cut out all tye Cholesterol in the diet, the liver will shoot in. YOu are ovo-lacto vegetarian, so you eat some cholesterol (eggs and dairy) Not all vegans are. Vegetarian are different, and if you are (which I assume you are) eating properly, you could be very healthy. It takes a lot of discipline to become vegetarian, not all can do it. I could never do it. I love meat too much and I know ppl who are vegetarians, ovo-lacto, that live on Chinese take-out (not the steam versions) and other junks or high fat like ice cream. SO there is the smart way of eating and that applies to all of us, carnivores, omnivores and vegetarians/vegans. But - what I was trying to emphasis is the fact that many women choose to become vegetarians as means to lose wt and sometimes it is a beginning sign of anorexia (especially with teens). And anorexia is no longer the disease of the teens/young women, but also of middle age women (the average Oprah audience) and now, that we all live longer, we start to see it among 65+ yo women. Guest guest
Same here. I've been ovo-lacto-vegetarian for about 15 years and vegan the last 5 years. My cholesterol remained high (230) when I was ovo-lacto and when I became vegan it dropped to 150. Being Seventh Day Adventist, I know a lot of healthy vegans and vegetarians, and our group has been well studied by the Adventist Health Study, with grant from the NIH. Loma 's Seventh Day Adventists more particularly have been featured in the Blue Zone documentary as one of the areas in the world where people live longer and better. Bellow, you can see some data from the Adventist Health Study which looked at the lifestyle of 96,000 members of the church living in the US and Canada: Lifestyle and Disease Our data shows a progressive weight increase from a total vegetarian diet toward a non-vegetarian diet. For instance, 55-year-old male and female vegans weigh about 30 pounds less than non-vegetarians of similar height. Additionally, levels of cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure, and the metabolic syndrome all had the same trend – the closer you are to being a vegetarian, the lower the health risk in these areas. In the case of type 2 diabetes, prevalence in vegans and lacto-ovo vegetarians was half that of non-vegetarians, even after controlling for socioeconomic and lifestyle factors. Although our data does not prove causation, it does suggest that possibility, thus, it is interesting to examine the characteristics of vegans/vegetarians. Compared to non-vegetarians, vegans/vegetarians: - Watched less television - Slept more hours per night - Consumed more fruits and vegetables - Consumed less saturated fat - Typically ate foods with a low glycemic index, such as beans, legumes and nuts Maggie Carneiro MPH, RD, CDE ________________________________ To: rd-usa Sent: Thu, June 2, 2011 9:12:13 AM Subject: Re: Great response to Oprah's vegan challenge Really???
