Have you watched the movie?   I can tell you that the struggle with the Texas

Medical Board is real and happening all throughout Texas....... I meet with

functional medicine physicians every month ....... the Texas Medical Board (TMB)

routinely takes their records and brings frivolous charges against them, simply

because they practice functional medicine.  These are not quacks, but honestly

trying to go beyond " giving a pill for every ill " like traditional doctors do,

and really trying to get to the bottom of a patient's condition.   One doctor

for example spent $60,000 defending " himself/herself " against the TMB..... this

is a physician with a long list of credentials/accomplishments including

teaching at UT Southwestern.   The TMB couldn't find anything wrong after they

took this doctor's medical records, so they ordered the doctor to get a

psychiatric evaluation....... the psychiatrist gave the doc a clean bill of

mental health, so the TMB

ordered another psychiatric evaluation with one of " their " approved

psychiatrists which also produced a clean bill of mental health, much to the

TMB's chagrin.   They finally dismissed the doctor with this parting

comment......... " Well, you're just too entrepreneurial. "       Like I said,

this doctor spent $60,000.  Even though the TMB didn't find anything wrong,

they routinely pick on these same doctors over and over again with ridiculous

charges, hoping to bankrupt them or make them quit their practices.   

 

These doctors are organizing all over Texas and trying to change the TMB and I

hope they are successful.

Nothing major, except aligning with the functional medicine

community........he quit taking insurance like a lot of functional medicine

practitioners are doing now, and is using diet, supplements and testing ( like

thyroid, hormones, adrenals, food sensitivity, etc) and when necessary,

prescription drugs, but just not resorting to drugs before trying natural

approaches first.     Another example.......a similar doctor... this is one

awesome lady...  you can read her story on her website...... she " converted " to

being a functional medicine practitioner when traditional medicine didn't help

her.  She was so fatigued that she had to quit her successful OBGYN practice

for several years.   By learning about nutrition, thyroid, adrenals, hormones,

and how the environment (toxins, etc) affect the body, she was able to get well,

and now she helps others that haven't found solutions within the traditional

medical community.   She has quit taking

insurance as well.  She's not expensive, but she wants to be able to do what

she thinks needs to be done, and not what insurance tells her she can do.  This

is her website.

But are they doing things like adrenal fatigue (dx doesn't exist), liver

detox, homeopathy and this type of medicine - red flags should be up IMHO.

As should traditional medicine MDs when excessive and unwarranted and over

prescribing drugs.

Adrenal fatigue aka adrenal insufficiency is very real, my son is going through

that right now,  in addition to hypothyroid, which is related.   Adrenal

insufficiency affects cortisol levels and DHEA levels, all very real and

measurable.   If I had taken my son to a traditional doctor, they would have

done a routine thyroid panel or possibly just TSH, which would have missed an

abnormal reverse T3 and free T4,  so knowing that I ran the complete panel

Adrenal fatigue aka adrenal insufficiency is very real, my son is going through

that right now,  in addition to hypothyroid, which is related.   Adrenal

insufficiency affects cortisol levels and DHEA levels, all very real and

measurable.   If I had taken my son to a traditional doctor, they would have

done a routine thyroid panel or possibly just TSH, which would have missed an

abnormal reverse T3 and free T4,  so knowing that I ran the complete panel

My sweet niece has 's Disease. She started to experience

symptoms three years before the best Endo finally made the diagnosis!

She had adrenal " something " ! She had blood pressure drop, weight gain

then weight loss, fatigue, depression and when she finally turned

olive green and ended up in the Dallas hospital ER did she get a Dx!

My brother and sister-in-law are top attorneys in Dallas, took my

niece to the best doctors with no results! This Feb she has been Dx

with Cancer, stage 2-3 with one tumor the size of a golf ball that

she found not the MDs! She started chemo and I pray she recovers!

Lucky for her that the Oncologist was a RD before going to Medical

School!

, I am praying for you and your son. My niece also had

hypothyroid for her first Dx. My ex-husband is a MD, trained in Texas

and was sad to see the terrible care that both his parents recieved

from the MDs in Texas.

Hi ,

Thanks for the link. I must say I'm not impressed by the board or by the

authors. The board consists of all MD's! There is not a DO or an ND, so this

to me is a battle against " new age " thinking by " old school " thinkers, if you

will. They spend a lot of time bashing CAM, but they really should spend that

precious energy LEARNING, UNDERSTANDING and PRACTICING it. If you continually

try to find only what is " science based " you will not get to the root of most

problems because the body is not just a programmed machine, it's a biologically

unique and synergistic system, with each person having their own blueprint.

Many MD's criticize CAM because they don't want to get out of their comfort

zone, and because they don't

understand it.

Adrenal fatigue definitely exists - it's the body's warning sign that something

is amiss, and it's basically the non-'s form of adrenal dysfunction for

which MD's simply tell a

person to relax then give them anti-depressants. However, left unchecked (or

unrecognized by doctors who are still relying only on " science based " answers)

it can lead into 's Disease.

The traditional MD's are looking for the results of the ACTH test, but the

numbers may still be within normal range (all the while causing more harm). Why

wait until the horses leave the barn before you

close the door? Most MD's do not know how to deal with this type of condition

which requires taking time with the patient and helping them make critical diet

and lifestyle changes, so they just prescribe drugs (which taxes the adrenals

even more). By the way, adrenal fatigue was first described in medical texts in

the 1800's as a clinical condition, with diagnostic tools and treatment

programs.

Science based medicine is important, but it is not the only answer. " Science

based medicine " is nowadays very politically and financially motivated, and

many doctors are choosing to leave the often narrow-minded, pharmaceutically

guided principles of Western Medicine to get more into finding the root of a

patient's problem, and actually closing the barn door BEFORE the horses get

out. If you talk to any of the MD's who are practicing functional medicine, you

will find that they are using the mixed approach of both Western Medicine and

CAM.

No.... I'm dealing with it now with my son, it's not a fake disease.......

sometimes doctors think in terms of black and white and they don't pay

attention to the gradual decline or changes in lab values that gets someone to a

point of a formal diagnosis.  Looking at changing lab values can help someone

make lifestyle changes that can prevent disease in many cases.   For example,

one doctor told one of my patients the other day that " you either have diabetes

or you don't,  and you don't, so don't worry about it. "     and completely

ignored signs of insulin resistance and blood glucose levels that are creeping

up as a danger sign.   I have had hundreds of IBS patients tell me over the

years that they have been told that IBS is all in their head because when the

doctor runs tests or scopes  they can't find anything wrong.   Well duh,

since IBS is mostly an immune response to foods (yes, stress, etc too).    I

could go on, but my point is

that adrenal fatigue may not be an " accepted condition " but it depicts some

changing lab values that signal that the person's body is undergoing some

changes that need to be addressed.    It's prevention which most traditional

doctor's don't do, because unfortunately, they are trained to give a pill for

every ill.   Is that really what we want?  I had one patient who had a pain

in her gut, so the doctor gave her a pill for that......well, that pill caused

her to have hypertension, so the doc sent her to a cardiologist which put her on

blood pressure meds.   That in turn caused something else, so she got sent to

specialist #3 which put her on more meds.  Pill #3 caused something else so she

got sent to specialist #4,  and I kid you not, that caused another set of

symptoms so she got sent to specialist #5 which wanted to put her on

antidepressants.  She told that doctor that she wasn't depressed, but that

fiasco caused by all 5 of them was

making her upset, so she finally fired them all,  got another opinion and it

turns out she had a diseased gallbladder, got it fixed and that was the end of

that.   If I sound frustrated, it's because this is my typical patient.  

Doctors don't think anymore, they are extensions of the pharmaceutical industry

and the FDA.   Along comes a group of doctors, functional medicine

practitioners, and they are a breath of fresh air, trying to help patients

outside the typical " pill for every ill " system so they are viewed as a threat

and villified by the traditional medical community.  I hope the

" competition "  helps traditional doctors make some improvements too, but with 15

minutes per patient or less, I'm not holding my breath.

I'm in agreement with you. I've talked to nephrologists who actually do have an

open mind when it comes to CAM (within limits; nephrologists have to know some

CAM, as patients and naive CAM practitioners occasionally get a bit carried away

and do some serious kidney damage with odd combinations of things).... all say

that adrenal fatigue is a nonentity. Your adrenals do not get tired. However,

your wallet might from some of the treatments I've seen offered for tired

adrenals.

It's interesting. We'd jump all over a " traditional physician who " does "

nutrition, yet when NDs or others who are " non-traditional " get into nutrition,

we celebrate them. Double standard?

Jacquelyn, when patients seen by CAM have exacerbations of chronic illness that

are beyond their scope, guess where those patients are sent? To traditional MDs.

That's another beef that the big, bad, western docs have. They'd like those CAM

providers to not spend so much time putting traditional medicine down and then

sending patients on to them when things go bad. Remember, CAM does not cure

everything.

I'm in agreement with you. I've talked to nephrologists who actually do have an

open mind when it comes to CAM (within limits; nephrologists have to know some

CAM, as patients and naive CAM practitioners occasionally get a bit carried away

and do some serious kidney damage with odd combinations of things).... all say

that adrenal fatigue is a nonentity. Your adrenals do not get tired. However,

your wallet might from some of the treatments I've seen offered for tired

adrenals.

It's interesting. We'd jump all over a " traditional physician who " does "

nutrition, yet when NDs or others who are " non-traditional " get into nutrition,

we celebrate them. Double standard?

are beyond their scope, guess where those patients are sent? To traditional MDs.

That's another beef that the big, bad, western docs have. They'd like those CAM

providers to not spend so much time putting traditional medicine down and then

sending patients on to them when things go bad. Remember, CAM does not cure

everything.

providers to not spend so much time putting traditional medicine down and then

sending patients on to them when things go bad. Remember, CAM does not cure

everything.

If you will look at my last sentence in the previous e-mail, it states what you

are saying. A mixed approach is quite often used. Sometimes it is necessary to

use invasive medical techniques, but not ALWAYS - that's the difference between

the two schools of thinking.

If the patient goes to an MD who practices CAM, and that MD can't find the

solution, then sending the patient to a " big, bad, Western Doc " makes sense.

Keep in mind that MD's who are practicing CAM were initially trained in the

traditional way, and chose to

go to a more " patient oriented " approach.
