I have been asked to speak at a support group meeting. What topics would be

best to cover for this population? Ideas?

Thanks so much!

,

I am referencing: *Nutrition and Diagnosis - Related Care* 6th edition by

Sylvia-Escott Stump. I recommend that all dietetic professionals have this

book in their therapy. It is an invaluable reference.

She discusses the factors that might trigger the disease. She also

discusses the variable ranges in the severity of the disease. There is

importance to make the correct diagnosis because it has a tendency to mimic

other disorders, i.e. Lupus may show similar symptoms of ceiac disease. The

immunological profile of immunoglobulin (Ig) A deficieny or the raised

double-stranded DNA in the absence of antinuclear factor, elevated

inflammatory markers, and symptoms suggestive of an immune disorder should

alert the physicians to the possiblity of gluten sensitivity.

Intervention objectives include:

Counteract steriod therapy

Replenish K+ reserves

Reduce fever & replace nutrient losses & wt loss

Control disease manifestions

Manage cardiac effects, i.e. Pericarditis is the most common, SOB, and chest

pain

Lupus nephritis is the term for the kidney disease (glomerulonephritis) that

occurs with Lupus - about 1/3 of people with Lupus developi it.

Rule out gluten intolerance.

Side effects of common drugs should be addressed; Common drugs are NSAIDS,

acetaminophen, Steriods, Antimatarials, and Immunosuppressive agents.

Cortosone creams may be needed for persistent skin rashes.

Sunscreens are important to skin from harmful rays

Herbs and botanicals should not be used without discussing with physicians

Some people have used Coumestrol which is a natural phytoestrogen that has

seemed to relieve some symptoms.

During acute flare-ups adequate rest is necessary
