Guest guest
Hello All We have just gone through a review (joint commission mock survey) at our small acute care hospital in prep for JCAHO. They have cited us for providing nutrition supplements (ie ensure, juven, glucerna, etc) without a physician order. That that his is in violation of federal regulations from standard HR.01.02.07 I have heard this had been happening, but now am needing to change things in our facility as the dietitians and nurses have been providing these without orders.. The reviewer suggested that we put some type of protocol in place to address this with physicians rather than having to track them down every time a supplement order is needed. For example give pt scenarios like pt not eating 50%, drinks supplements at home, has cancer, and physician can approve them given in these cases. Could others share their experiences if you have had to make this change and if you could provide a copy of either the diet order system or protocol, etc you put in place to address this? Thank you in advance for your assistance. This is really hindering my patient care.
