Guest guest
I am working with my first omnipod patient. In the past I worked mainly with Medtronic patients. For those of you who have gained experience with this system, would taking a meal bolus and then immediately changing pod effect absorption?? My patient decided on her own to bolus, change pod and then eat. I asked her not to do this in the future as I was worried she may have hypoglycemia if her meal got delayed with changing her pod. Any insight will help. Gwen ,RD,LDN,CDE
Guest guest
I don't think it would affect the absorption, as long as she got the whole bolus from the first pod before she changed to the 2nd pod. It only takes about 5 minutes to fill and change the pod; the length of time to deliver the bolus of course would depend on the amount of insulin being given. What was her blood sugar before she took the bolus? If it was relatively low, say less than 100 mg/dl, she could be at risk for hypoglycemia if it took 15+ minutes to change the pod plus get the whole bolus, especially if she didn't eat until she was done. If her blood sugar was elevated before she took the bolus, I would think she would be OK, even considering the fact that the correction factor would be added into it. Maybe her pod was beeping at her so much, because it was time to change it, that she just didn't want to hear the noise while she was eating....?
