,

First off, was this a board certified allergist doing IgE or RAST tests or

another

specialist using IgG tests? There a lot of psychologists and others who do IgG

testing, which is not considered valid.

Secondly, there are elemental and semi-elemental liquid nutritional drinks that

we use in situations with severe allergies. Where is this family—Naperville or

land?

In either case, refer her to a children’s hospital. Cincinnati Children’s

has an EE clinic.

I don’t know about Chicago or Hopkins. An EE clinic would be her best bet.

Subject: Allergy to ALL tested food!

The following came from a friend. Any ideas from the experts? My field

is geriatric nutrition.

So our GI from Hopkins called tonight with the biopsy results. You're

never going to believe this... Chance tested positive for EVERY single food

allergen they tested! They tested for 30 allergens and he was positive for

ALL!

We are giving him Periactin and that seems to have controlled the

vomiting. Has anyone else angel tested positive for all food? What the heck do I

do

now? He loves to eat! GI said he's never seen this before, ever! He wants

to do more research and get back to me. In the meantime, he's been

diagnosed with eosinophilic esophagitis. Anyone else dealt with that? To make

matters worse, he's lactose intolerant and he anemic! I'm glad to have some

answers, but how the heck do you treat allergies to ALL foods?

Thanks. Anything I can pass on to this Mom will be appreciated.

Just to add a thought... skin prick tests are notorious for false

positives.

Did they do a histamine control? (if they are not an allergist, sometimes

they forget to take this into account)

Did they then confirm with CAP-RAST or similar blood draw?

How right you are. It is very important to find out what tests were used.

When I

was having digestive problems, I was tested by IgG...I came out allergic

to so

many foods it was a miracle I was still alive...NONSENSE..nowhere did

wheat

appear as an allergen...guess what..Wheat was causing all my problems and

since

I eliminated wheat

I have been fine.

Have you suggested a LEAP Dietitian?

Yes I have worked with a child with EE. He almost died before it was recognized,

was still near birth weight as a toddler. Around one year old he was surviving

on breast milk and little else and as a first time mom she didn't know just how

wrong/untypical it was for a baby to act like he was. He had developed aversions

to solids because he threw up so much. At the time I didn't get it

physiologically but he ended up tolerating Pedisure (but couldn't drink milk)

and continued to eat very limited solids. I think at the time that the increased

fortification of vitamin D in the Pediasure (compared to breast milk) probably

had a Prednisone like effect on the excess of white blood cells (corticosteroids

are a primary treatment when EE is severe). I haven't spoken with the family for

a while but I think he continued to use Pediasure as a primary part of his diet.

(did not love to eat -the food aversion for him remained a problem). I don't

think he got 'better' just more stable/manageable and, of course, not dead was a

bonus. (doctor hadn't been concerned about his reflux - all babies spit up -

right?) Elemental formulas are the current recommendation for severe cases/flair

ups of EE.

Might help with getting " better " instead of just stable:

http://www.ankalet.com/sabinsa/Rosmarinicacid3.htm Rosmarinic acid may help

reduce overactive white blood cell problems. I found it helpful during my worse

years - Life Extension carries it.

Slippery elm powder or marshmallow root powder, fenugreek, aloe vera juice,

mushrooms and/or glucosamine would probably all aid the health and immune

function of the esophageal/ intestinal lining (and ginger). Omega three fatty

acids should also benefit. Allergy sensitivity can fluctuate with health and

stress and so reducing the WBC reactivity can make the diet limitations easier

to cope with - still necessary at a macroscopic/entree level but maybe not

always needed at the microscopic/food additive level as well.

GI Motility online (2006) doi:10.1038/gimo49

Published 16 May 2006, Eosinophilic esophagitis, Nurko, M.D., M.P.H.

and Glenn T. Furuta, M.D. - recommends skin patch testing for allergies not

just RAST or skin prick. Also pollen and mold allergy flair ups environmentally

were found to make the physical symptoms worse as well as the intake of problem

foods.

The overview literature mentions that proton pump inhibitors are ineffective

medications (antiacid tx would reduce GERD symptoms so a 4-6 wk trial on proton

pump inhibitors if ineffective is supportive of the Dx of EE and ruling out

GERD). Some people genetically respond differently to proton pump inhibitors

so maybe the 1 in 10000 people with EE also fall in that genetic group as well.

So a deficit or abnormality in the metabolic pathways of magnesium and or

cannabinoids may be involved (both adequate magnesium and functioning

cannabinoid receptor system are crucial for healthy control of membrane ion

channels). I'll bet the child wasn't tested for allergy to hemp protein powder

or oil (THC free - Living Harvest brand hemp products). Or overacidity simply

isn't part of the EE problem but it wouldn't hurt to try something different and

the tissues of the EE esophagus are described as edematous so fluid movement is

at least involved.

Sunflower seed butter is yummy and goes well on a Lundberg rice cake (less

styrofoamy than Quaker and other name brand rice cakes) - point being- 30 foods

is still not all foods - just seems like it - would add up to ingredients

within most/all processed foods :-(

Soft / liquid foods may physically work best - dsyphagia and narrow esophagus

with risks of impaction can be a problem. The little boy I worked with continued

to prefer liquids most. This problem is found in adult men as well (less common

in women - weird - and pretty focused on the esophagus - weird). Recommendation

is to consider EE if you're working with an adult with ongoing

heartburn/dysphagia/impaction problems unaided by antacid tx.

Cincinnati Children’s

has an

EE clinic.
