Guest guest
Thanks for all the information sent to me. This week and I will go and check them out. We have 2 Jazzy Dealers here in town. Never thought it would happen so fast, as we just bought a Buick 6 payments ago. It has a large trunk, so we will have to take that into consideration also. wants me to stay in the manual chair (which I already have), says he doesn't mind pushing me, but I mind because he a a heart condition, and doesn't need to be pushing me around. So thanks again, I will keep you posted on my decision. You guys are great. Rita Luv & Hugs! ************************************* Some people succeed in spite of their handicap. Guest guest
HI RITA, I AM SO GLAD TO HEAR YOU ARE DOING BETTER. I WAS QUITE WORRIED ABOUT YOU. I JUST TOLD RONNIE THAT WE PICKED UP AN OLD VAN. I HOPE TO GET HELP TO MODIFY IT. I WAS VERY IMPRESSED WITH THE DEALER. WHEN HE FOUND OUT WHAT I WANTED IT FOR HE SOLD IT TO ME FOR WHAT HE GAVE FOR TRADE IN. HE DIDN'T MAKE A CENT. HE EVEN LET ME TAKE IT TO MY MECHANIC TO HAVE IT CHECKED OVER. TURNS OUT THAT I KNEW THE PERSON THAT OWNED IT BEFORE. WHEN WE GET IT OUTFITTED WE WILL BE GETTING A POWER CHAIR FOR DON. IT IS GETTING REALLY DIFFICULT FOR HIM TO GET INTO A CAR. WE ARE DOING FINE AND KEEPING BUSY AROUND HERE. HE HAS PT TWO DAYS A WEEK, WE GO FISHING WITH OUR GRANDSON AND JUST LOVE TO BUY WINDOWS. LOVE TO ALL BONNIE - OH Re: PORTABLE POWER CHAIRS > Thanks for all the information sent to me. This week and I will go > and check them out. We have 2 Jazzy Dealers here in town. Guest guest
---Rita, I saw a jazzy on the back of a persons car the other day when we were shopping. It looked like it was setting on a stand that was mounted on the rear of their car. That might be something to consider. Guest guest
That stand mounted on the back sounds neat. I'm hoping someone knows more about that, where you could get it and about how much. you're a gem so very thoughtful but I can see you getting tired sometime then you could just sit on Rita's lap and have a ride. Now wouldn't that be nice. See I have one and at church some kids are wanting to have a ride. That way I get attention from the kids as their parents tell then about my PLS why I can't walk or talk. Guest guest
Hi : You sure know how to make me smile. I have been taking my poor for " a ride " for years without a wheelchair, LOL! This place that I am going to on Friday, does install these lifts on the back of the car, so as soon I learn more about them, I will forward the info onto all of you. I haven't tried to find a web site pertaining to them, I will try. Rita Luv & Hugs! ************************************* Some people succeed in spite of their handicap. Guest guest
I know this isnt walk or pls but can I make a couple of suggestions. Portable chairs although they come apart are still 35 pounds. Will you have someone to always lift the pieces? Can you put the chair in the trunk and safely walk to the front of the car? Portable power chairs have upgrade problems. When your looking at seven years with one chair this could be a huge burden to overcome. Could you mention this concern to your representative? One of the options that is really great is to have a seat lift so you can raise up to reach counters and other areas out of reach without a seat lift. In portables this option is not available. What about car lift options such as a hurcules lift or a chair lift on the back of the car. I know some but not all lifts are covered by insurance. Can you get any assistance from DVR for adapted vehicles? A new vehicle may be out but what about used? I can help you with a fundraiser in your area to cover a used one. We could see about getting local mechanics to donate labor and rebuild the engine and all sorts of stuff. We did this for my friend Roland and it worked out really well. If you want you could call my toll free line and we could talk about it and at least have some good questions to ask when you go to order your chair. It would really stink if you could not get what you really need. Take a look at this only as an example. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? Guest guest
Hi Jen: Thanks for the info, but they are located in Wisconsin, and I am in NH, so I think it's best that I stick to this area. That way if anything goes wrong, I only have a short distance to go. For years I have purchased all my needs locally and have had no problems. They sell Jazzy, Pride, and service what they sell. Tanks for thinking of me. Rita Luv & Hugs! ************************************* Some people succeed in spite of their handicap. Others succeed because of them. Guest guest
Shell: You know what ticks me off? I live in senior low income housing, in a handicapped apartment which is very comfortable and suits my needs. But there are people here in my building who are on Medicaid, and have never worked, and they get everything free. My next dor neighbor (who I just love) has a powerchair, free dental, free prescriptions, and the lady up stairs just moved in, and she is from Texas, and she is also on Medicaid and she gets everything free, a housekeeper is provided to her, and God Bless them the need it, and I don't want to take anything away from them. They have never worked one day in there life. I have worked all my life, paid my share and I still do. I pay my Medicare premiums, pay $206.00 per month to my secondary carrier, and every time my doctor authorizes me to get something to help, they always reject my claim, and then have to appeal and beg for reimbursement, it's not fair. Everything I have asked for I have needed, and I don't need some little twit sitting hind a desk, telling me and my doctor that we are wrong an they make the final decision. I know there is a lot of fraud out there, but what about the people like me, that need this assistance, pay for it, and have to fight for every freakin ( I am being polite) i need. I am sorry, but I have been down and out for the past three weeks, and I don't want to ever have to go thru this again (if I can help it and I know there are no guarantees. If they give me a hard time, I plan on going to the newspapers, and media (if they have the (you know whats) to help me. I am so tired of all this crap. Thanks for letting me vent my frustration. I feel better, but nobody gives a S--t about the little guy. Thanks for listening, Rita Luv & Hugs! ************************************* Some people succeed in spite of their handicap. Guest guest
Rita, Don't you think you're putting the cart before the horse (or PWC)? On Friday, you're going to see people who sell power chairs. He's going to want to sell you a chair whether you need one or not. (The guy has boat payments, right?) Maybe you want to go FIRST to a physical therapist or somebody else to evaluate your needs who doesn't have a financial interest in the decision. Maybe there is a walker available (two wheels or no wheels) that will provide more support and keep you walking. I know everybody is different, but frankly I don't know anybody with PLS uses those walkers with four wheels and the bicycle brakes. I've tried them and they are always getting away from me. But that's just my opinion. Re: Re: PORTABLE POWER CHAIRS Thanks Carolyn: Thats the direction I am leaning towards. I can drive and I am still pretty mobile, so a van I guess would be ok, if I was in a chair all the time. We will make that decision on Friday. Guest guest
Jeff, A number of PLSers have the bicycle brakes and like them fine. I have a walker with strap brakes which I like since I have my hands on the brake constantly and can set it so it takes very little force to brake. Guest guest
: My neurologist is the one who recommended me get a chair for my safety. I have a lot of faith in him, and he has been my doctor since day 1. As for these people I am going to on Friday, I am not going to jump into anything. I was scheduled to start therapy last week until I fell, and everything has been put on hold. After having this stupid-sucky disease for so many years, I know my body, I have always listened to my body, and things are starting to change, When I was diagnosed in 1986, I was told that things would probably start to happen around the age of 65, well I just turned 66. I have been very very lucky compared to other PLSer's who are worse of then I am, and have had PLS a shorter time span. I have nothing to complain about, I just got to go with it. I am getting so tired of fighting this disease, 25 years is a long time. I value your opinion and I thank you for taking the time to give it to me. Guest guest
Rita, I have to agree with Jeff--you should have some evaluation of your needs by a physical therapist before you make a purchase. I also have to disagree with Jeff about the 4 wheeled walkers (aka Swedish walkers). I have used one for a long time. So have other PLSers we've met. They do have their place in our ambulation challenges. Dolores Re: Re: PORTABLE POWER CHAIRS > > > Thanks Carolyn: > > Thats the direction I am leaning towards. Guest guest
I have my days and nights mixed up. It is not unusual for me to go to bed at 3 AM, but I sleep until 11 or 12 noon. In the few hours before I go to bed, I am the least painful and least spastic, so I take advantage of the time. When I wake up, the vicious cycle of stiffness, pain, and spasticity starts all over again. Plus, my Internet connection does not interfere with my phone calls at this late hour. Sweet dreams to you. Guest guest
-Jeff I have been trying out different walkers, and I agree with you. The smaller wheeled ones just get away from me, but the bigger wheels are much more manuverable. I am getting one this week.
