She is a healthy child with no medical complications and mom does not normally provide junk food, sweets or soda at home; she provides treats once a week. The girl is a semi vegetarian, by choice (she does not like much meat except chicken, every now and then). I'm okay with the nutrition education part; I just need to know how to calculate her daily nutritional needs. Thanks, in advance.
Guest guest
I used 13.5 kcal/cm if I really need to calculate energy. But usually with this age group I'll use MyPyramid.gov for goal servings different food groups as a starting point (and remove reference to calorie level). http://www.mypyramid.gov/mypyramid/results.html?name=undefined & age=9 & gender=fema\ le & weight=64 & heightfeet=4 & heightinch=4 & activity=low & weightN=64 & heightfeetN=4 & hei\ ghtinchN=4 & validweight=0 & validheight=0 &  ---------- Holly Lee Brewer, MS RD CDE Pediatric Dietitian, Diabetes Educator Medical Nutrition Therapist, Las Vegas, NV Maj Holly Brewer, USAFR BSC http://hollyinbalad.blogspot.com 301st MDS, NAS JRB Fort Worth (Carswell), TX Joint Base Balad, Iraq (Jan-Jul 2009) ________________________________ To: RD USA <rd-usa > Sent: Mon, April 18, 2011 1:08:10 PM Subject: CALCULATING ENERGY NEEDS FOR OVERWEIGHT/OBESE 9 YEAR OLD  Hello Everyone, What weight would you use to calculate daily nutritional needs for a nine year girl whose weight is in the 90th percentile for age, taking into consideration that she is still a growing child that needs adequate energy, protein, etc for healthy grown. She is a healthy child with no medical complications and mom does not normally provide junk food, sweets or soda at home; she provides treats once a week. The girl is a semi vegetarian, by choice (she does not like much meat except chicken, every now and then). Guest guest
I would calculate calorie needs using her current weight and then go to the 50th%ile of weight for her height and use that weight to calculate needs. Then, I would compare them and shoot for a range in the middle.
