Clinicians, from pediatrics, family medicine and geriatrics appointed to lead

the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) today announced the

appointments of Virginia A. Moyer, M.D., M.P.H., as chair, and Albert L. Siu,

M.D., M.S.P.H., and L. LeFevre, M.D., M.S.P.H., as co-vice chairs of the

Task Force. The USPSTF is an independent, volunteer panel of 16 private-sector

experts in prevention and primary care that makes recommendations to primary

care clinicians about preventive services such as screenings, counseling, or

preventive medications that may benefit patients before they experience signs or

symptoms of a condition.  More information, including biographies for each new

and existing member, is available at www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org.

I JUST started following this. Very important we not only respond, but WHO

has connections to the 16 member board, (noted below) and we MUST find

some appropriate RDs with research background regarding cost/benefit of

nutrition therapies to consider being on this board.

And, if the board is JUST 16 members, our input could have a significant

impact, especially if they are presented with the research!

Current Members

The USPSTF comprises primary care clinicians (e.g., internists,

pediatricians, family physicians, gynecologists/obstetricians, and nurses).

Individual members' interests include: decision modeling and evaluation;

effectiveness in clinical preventive medicine; clinical epidemiology; the

prevention

of high-risk behaviors in adolescents; geriatrics; and the prevention of

disability in the elderly.

Current members of the Task Force are listed below. They have recognized

expertise in prevention, evidence-based medicine, and primary care.

I also noticed the grade C recommendation - it seems to be based on the

ineffectiveness of the minimal contact counseling but it also mentioned

more

effective longer term contacts which the RD could be providing.

" Overall, the most important factor for differences in effect sizes was

intervention intensity. The strongest evidence for improvement of

physiologic

outcomes was for high-intensity counseling interventions. Few

medium-intensity

interventions and no high-intensity interventions involved primary care

clinicians as the provider of the intervention. Rather, counseling

interventions took place in other sectors of the health care system or

community settings. "

A Grade C is not a recommendation at all. A group effort to urge a Grade B

at

least would be good.

C = " The USPSTF recommends against routinely providing the service. There

may

be considerations that support providing the service in an individual

patient.

There is at least moderate certainty that the net benefit is small.

Offer/provide this service only if other considerations support offering

or

providing the service in an individual patient. "

B = " The USPSTF recommends the service. There is high certainty that the

net

benefit is moderate or there is moderate certainty that the net benefit is

moderate to substantial. Offer/provide this service. "

Any thought about a team effort response? I went to the comment section

and it

is pretty detailed. I’m willing to work w/others to craft a

recommendation and

then post. This is important to get the RD name and understanding that a

grade

C to not recommend counseling until an issue arises is the same issue we

have

today. Preventative services are more cost effective in the long run- at

least

that is how corporate wellness is being sold to companies w/health

insurance.

The ROI for a company to offer a wellness program is essentially a

preventative

approach.
