Cranberry extract was not as effective as trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole

(TMP-SMX) in preventing urinary tract infections in women, a double-blind

study found.

During a year of prophylaxis, the mean number of new urinary tract

infections among women taking cranberry extract was 4 (95% CI 2.3 to 5.6),

while the mean number for women taking the low-dose antibiotic was 1.8 (95%

CI 0.8 to 2.7), according to Suzanne E. Geerlings, MD, PhD, of Academic

Medical Center in Amsterdam, and colleagues.

However, after only one month of treatment, more than 85% of fecal flora

from women taking the antibiotic were resistant to TMP-SMX, the researchers

reported in the July 25 *Archives of Internal Medicine.

A combination of weight training and aerobic exercise might be the best

prescription for overweight people at risk for diabetes and heart disease, a

new study suggests.

People doing only aerobic exercise dropped weight and inches off their

waistlines -- so an aerobic-only program is also a good (and less

time-consuming) option, researchers said. Those in the study who just lifted

weights saw very little benefit in terms of heart health, although they did

gain strength.

" Aerobic plus resistance is clearly the optimal program, " said Dr.

Church, who studies exercise and disease at Louisiana State University's

Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge.

U.S. health regulators on Monday advised people not to eat papaya from Texas

distributor Agromod Produce as they investigate a possible link to a

salmonella outbreak in 23 U.S. states.

The outbreak of Salmonella Agona has resulted in 97 reported cases of

illness across the country, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said. Ten

people have been hospitalized.

Texas and Illinois registered the most cases, especially affecting children

under 5 years old and women.

Mc, Texas-based Agromod is voluntarily recalling its papayas, which

were imported from Mexico. FDA said it is working with the papaya

distributor and with officials in Mexico to determine how the fruit became

contaminated.

Agromod announced its papaya recall on Saturday, saying the fruit was

distributed across the United States and to Canada. The recall affects all

Blondie, Yaya, Mananita and Tastylicious brand papayas sold before July 23.

The company was not immediately available for comment on Monday.
