Guest guest
Are you aloud to get your legs wet? I had two hip replacements but figure a bandage is a bandage. Both times I thoroughly covered my bandage with several layers of Saran wrap the day after I got home, then taped it in place using something called First Aid Tape I'd found at Walmart which I'd chosen because its waterproof. I have a good-sized shower so lifted my walker into the shower then got in leading with my 'good' leg. Shampoed my hair and soaped everything I could reach. The water ran over the Saran wrap, etc. When I got out, (again leading with my good leg after lifting the walker out of the shower) I carefully removed my make-shift protection and checked the bandage. No moisture so I figured I was good to go. It's a bit of a pain to do so I only shower every other day but boy does it feel good to get clean. And no, I didn't ask permission of the surgeon. Just did what I figured would work. That said, I had the minimally invasive procedure so didn't have movement restrictions. Vella
Guest guest
Yes. By the time you get home, you have already showered in rehab, and, yes, you can get the knees wet. You just can't soak them in a tub. The shower water runs off, so it is ok. I don't know if I am a good one to ask about walking and shopping. I am now 4 months post-op and I still need Percocet for the pain. Now, I did have both knees done, which I am told makes recuperation harder. The first three weeks after my surgery were absolutely horrible. I have had many surgeries in my time, but this one was by far the worst for pain and recuperation time. I have always snapped back within a week or two, but not this time. At this point (4 months) I can walk and shop if I take a Percocet first. Walking is better than standing in one place. Standing still is still painful quickly. I am told it takes 6 months to a year to feel better from this surgery. I didn't believe it before. I definitely believe it now. I have heard of many people who came home on only Tylenol, and were getting around within a few weeks. That was not me. I hope your surgery is one like the easy ones. Guest guest
Depending on your insurance and where you go for rehab, the rehab might supply you with shower chair, cane, leg lifter, sock puller, etc and bill your insurance. Guest guest
Hi, I have dealt with the opoid tolerance, having both knees done and then back surgery. We are all different in how our bodies react to these invasive surgeries. I still need some pain meds with my back, but my hip(3rd joint replacement) wasn't so bad after a month. I was also determined to get off the oxycodone as soon as possible because of my ability to develop tolerance, and wanted to be able to have my back pain meds still work when I needed them. And, I think there can be one surgery where it is just darn hard.! My 2nd TKR was harder than the first pain wise, and compared to that my hip seemed easier, but I think I was more fatigued for several months. Taking a percocet to shop at 4 months seems pretty reasonable after a THR. Hope things improve for you each day Crissy. Patti (lurker, but read all posts) and dog lover. Two lhasa apsos own me. Guest guest
2 1/2 weeks after TKR and my DR said OK to do pool PT and take baths again. Still lots of edema now in upper thigh muscles and the knee joint. They said no to using a hot tub maybe even for one year, cold water OK but not hot water. I am wondering if anyone tried the hot tub after TKR and what are the bad effects? I don't see much different from a hot tub and a warm bath except maybe time. I have a programable zapper GB-4000 and have been using their pre-set programs for lymph drain, edema. At PT they have a zapper that runs 80 and 150hz frequencies that help to move lymph fluids. I also tried my Amega wand which does not seem to reduce the pain. I also have a cold medical laser that reduces pain but was afraid to use it because I was afraid it might create blood clots. A laser therapist on another list said it would be OK to try the laser. Brickey

Guest guest
My knee gradually went down. So gradually that I didn't even notice the swelling had gone until long after, I think. The new knee is still larger than the old one. The flex is almost even. At 2 1/2 weeks, you have a long way to go. I found that heat was better than cold. We had a big discussion about this here some months ago. I'm not partial to hot tubs, nor do I take baths. ( Relax, all. I shower). I think they don't want your body temperatures to rise so much. I had none of the tools you mentioned. The PT had some machine whose name I can't remember, but the tingling felt good. Now, 8 months on, the left side tingles when I rub the right. Keep at it! Guest guest
Hi - I'm glad I'm not the only one who can't do 10,000 each day. My dog is my motivation - we walk every day, some walks are longer than others. If I didn't have my dog I'd be stuck with the treadmill and I know I'd have to really force myself to use it. Hang in there! RTKR - 9/16/09 OS: Coon, St. Helena, CA Re: TKR My PT said to expect swelling on my TKR for 12 to 18 months. My PT had not heard of using a re-bounder after TKR. Has any other TJR tried using the re-bounder? Brickey
Guest guest
Hi , I really find it strange that you walked for 4 hours and only logged 1,000 steps. You should have made the 10,000 easily. I calibrated my pedometer with two other walkers and we were pretty much even, so I know it is working correctly. Did you get it at tones? I had one of theirs, and it was pretty good for a while. I now have a " fitbit " which has a dashboard on my computer that I can log into with calorie intake and exercise. My daughter-in-law gave it to me for Christmas. I love it! Guest guest
Mine's an Omron. I got it from the 350 Store at Cleveland Clinic. It has a program I can put on my computer, but I never did. We were at the clinic today and we had to go from end to the other & back again. I logged 4472 steps for that. That's 1.62 miles. Of course, I wasn't walking steady for the 4 hours. Lots of stops & starts. Who knows...I'm just happy I could be on my feet that long without pain 9 months after my TKR. Guest guest
Not sure I understand the reasoning behind this (no treadmill). My OS told me all he wanted me to do post-surgery was walk walk walk. The only reason he said to stay off the treadmill - at that time - was the possibility of a fall. Little did he know how many times I would fall walking outside my house! No harm done, thank goodness. At least with a treadmill you have rails to hold onto.
