Hi Colleen,

Having the knowledge of electrolytes within a TPN solution is within our

scope of practice. I studied under the RD who wrote the TPN chapter in the

Krause book and she was amazing. However, it is a specialized area that

needs proper training. Iif the wrong prescription is administered it can

lead to severe consequences (ie too much/little potassium has effect on

heart). As such, I know there are specialized exams you can take in order

gain the knowledge.

Absolutely, if you can demonstrate that you have the training and

expertise to do so.

In several positions I've had, I was responsible for managing all

aspects of the TPN formulation.
