I did a demo with a bowl of sugar representing the amount of added sugar

consumed if a child had one chocolate milk every school day (about 180

days/year) and let the parents decide for themselves. (It was a lot!!) For

some kids I think it really matters....adds tons of extra calories over the

course of the year. For other kids it might be OK.

school lunch conundrum

Are we driving parents crazy with recommendations? And the rules put out by

the schools, are they going too far? Does it reallllllly matter that much

if a kid has one 8 oz. serving of chocolate milk every day vs no milk? And

if kids weren't fat, would we be this worried about every morsel they ate?

IMO often the choice comes down to, chocolate milk and sufficient calcium?

Or no milk and less calories? For most children sufficient calcium intake is

essential. I'd find another way to cut calories if they're so important, bc

I'm certain the sugar in 8 oz of chocolate milk isn't enough to worry about,

even during the course of an entire year. Digna

I feel school lunch and school should be a place of learning and providing

healthy foods. Too many kids are not learning it at home, are bombarded

with " junk food " ads through TV, etc. Obviously, we can only discuss public

schools but gov't wants to regulate manufacturers, restaurants esp. fast

food, etc. These programs should be setting a good example.

IMHO 1) School lunch should provide no desserts - only the basic healthy

foods. Especially when you consider the free lunch program. No " junk food "

at parties either. It is a place of learning and what better lesson then

having healthy foods provided to you.

2) SNAP (food stamps) should restrict what individuals can purchase.

Healthier choices like WIC does. It is a " gift " , not a right to get free

food of your own choosing. When it is their dollar they can spend it as they

wish.

Sounds drastic but when you consider the " junk " the kids eat away from

school - they need some place where only healthy foods reign.
