I know just what smell you are referring to. Some are worse than others. I

know that bagged salad is inflated with extra nitrogen to protect the leaves

from bruising during shipping, but I'm not sure that would cause a taste.

Also, just a thought, green plants produce CO2, and since they are closed in a

bag, I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

Why does bagged lettuce taste funky? WHAT s it?

What creates the funky nasty chemical taste and smell in commercial

(mostly) bagged lettuce or salad mix. NOTHING is listed on the label.

I can't remember if it was a film I watched or a book I read but I recall

reading about how difficult it was for farmers/manufacturers to keep lettuce and

spinach from wilting during shipping and with much effort in trying all sorts of

things the end result was some type of modification (chemical) of the plastic

containers/wrappers. I am sorry for such a vague idea but perhaps it has to do

with the chemical they ended up using in the production of the plastic?! If I

think of my source I will send it on.
