It's a very confusing title, and I am insulted that the name was not even given

a vote by the members!!!!! Given the chance, I would have NEVER voted for this

one. Did we all even get a chance to SUGGEST names?

If I were not an RD, and I looked at this name, I would immediately think it was

a specialized place to study and obtain a degree in the field of nutrition and

dietetics.

We pay a lot of money yearly to belong to the organisation!! Why is everything

so secretive?

hi, Jan,

I wondered who would be first to respond. Makes me uneasy that members weren't

part of the decision. This 'change' is a little too autocratic for me. no vote

from the membership? And what was all that concern when the dietary managers

voted to change the name of their 'association'? I wonder what this does to the

governance of the 'association'? I like including nutrition in the name but

don't think a unilateral change to academy is appropriate. What about the

Fellows of the American Dietetic Association, a designation no longer available.

Do they become former FADAs? Raphaela

I completely agree. Just like MDs, RNs, PT, Psychologists etc have associations

that represents them, we should have one. Now, with this new name , it seems like

we don't have an association but rather a school. How inappropriate,

unprofessional name it is.While I don't remember being asked if I have a problem

with the name " Amer. Diet. Association " , I definitely don't appreciate the board

making such a significant change without having the members vote. I thought we

live in the USA, not is 1970's USSR.Maybe we should all write or call Members'

services in ADA and over-flood their lines and e-mails with our opinions. The

problem is, with my experience in the past, ADA has a tendency to ignore mass

opinion and they will tell you the majority voted against you, while you don't

get to see the actual numbers.Maybe it is time to start a new org??????? anybody

up to the task? I am, but you can't do it alone.

From the President ...

Sylvia A. Escott-Stump, MA, RD, LDN

Saturday, September 24, 2011

To all members of the American Dietetic Association:

Just a few minutes ago, at the Opening Session of ADA’s 2011 Food &

Nutrition Conference & Expo, I had the privilege of making an announcement that

will affect our Association, the entire dietetics profession and our

perception by the public. I am thrilled to share this announcement now with all

ADA members.

ADA has been in existence since 1917, after working to feed the troops

healthfully during World War I. Protecting the nutritional health of our

citizens is our highest priority. And acting together, we have accomplished

much toward realizing ADA’s mission and vision.

Toward the goal of increasing our potential and our impact, Past-President

Judith announced a year ago that ADA would be seeking a new name

for our organization to better suit our forward-thinking mission and

vision: a name that addresses prevention and wellness as well as therapy; a

name

that would resonate immediately with our members, the public, the media ‚Ä "

literally everyone who hears it; and a name that reflects our

science-based expertise.

Surveys revealed the majority of ADA members believe the organization

should have a new name that more accurately reflects what its members do. After

an extensive review, ADA’s Board of Directors voted in August to adopt a

new name. For weeks, I’ve been looking forward to sharing this monumental

change with you. As of January 2012, we will be the...

Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics

This is a name that immediately and fully complements our focus: the

nutritional well-being of the American public. Academy of Nutrition and

Dietetics promotes the strong science background and expertise of our members,

primarily registered dietitians. Nutrition science underpins wellness,

prevention and treatment.

An academy is “a society of learned persons organized to advance

science.”

This term describes our organization and immediately emphasizes the

educational strength of our advice and expertise. By adding nutrition to our

name, we communicate our capacity for translating nutrition science into

healthier lifestyles for everyone. Keeping dietetics supports our history as a

food and science-based profession.

Whether planning nutritious meals for children in day-care centers or

schools, teaching individuals with diabetes about managing their blood sugar or

saving lives with complex nutritional interventions after surgery,

registered dietitians are the best-qualified providers. The name change

communicates that we are the nutrition experts.

Thus, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics quickly and accurately

communicates our identity ‚Ä " who we are and what we do.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is the right name. And this is

the right time.

Our award-winning website will remain _www.eatright.org_

(http://mailer.eatright.org/t/9577/2648593/248/0/) . The colorful Eat Right

logo will stay a

part of the organization’s graphic identity. Eat Right is our most

powerful message and it aligns strategically with the Academy of Nutrition and

Dietetics.

The ADA Foundation Board of Directors voted earlier this month to change

its name to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation.

I hope you will agree with me that the name “American Dietetic

Association”

served us well for nearly 100 years. Now, let us draw upon the strengths

and values that have defined us since 1917, be aware of the huge

opportunities that await us and go forward to demonstrate what it means to be a

member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

We owe it to ourselves and to the people we serve.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Sylvia A. Escott-Stump, MA, RD, LDN

There has been a lot of interest in forming a new org in the past, maybe now is

hi, Jan,

I wondered who would be first to respond. Makes me uneasy that members weren't

part of the decision. This 'change' is a little too autocratic for me. no vote

from the membership? And what was all that concern when the dietary managers

voted to change the name of their 'association'? I wonder what this does to the

Here’s my take on this, for what it’s worth.

WE, the members, are given the opportunity to vote annually, and I imagine we

each vote for someone that we trust to have the knowledge, wisdom and good

judgment required to manage our organization for a year. WE also elect

delegates, and I imagine we are all given the opportunity to express ourselves

and our opinions to them. With a membership the size of ours, I would hate to

see the length of time and chaos involved in taking something like a name change

to a vote. So many other things we disagree on! This would go on forever. I

assume the AND has always had marketing consultants, and they were probably

involved. I don’t know anything about marketing or what appeals to the public.

I consider this name change a way to be more appealing to the public, just like

the DMA did. New branding, new image.

Now it’s our turn, the members, to rebrand ourselves. Let’s be true

professionals, get out of our shells, and conquer the nutrition and health

world.

Since we include nutrition in the new name will " nutritionists " come across as

dietitians? I think it's misleading for the public.

Since we include nutrition in the new name will " nutritionists " come across as

dietitians? I think it's misleading for the public.

I consider this name change a way to be more appealing to the public, just like

the DMA did. New branding, new image.

Digna,I always loved your posts, agreeing or not, but on this one, I cannot

agree. I think you give our organization governance more credibility then they

deserve. Sorry, anyone in the house who hears me. One thing about me, I sat

things as they are, at least from my perspective. It might have taken long to

vote, but we are the members and we deserve to be a part of it. And if, and that

is a big " if " they Board of Dir. actually consulted with marketers, they

obviously chose the wrong marketers who have no clue what a struggle it is out

there when everyone claim to be a " nutritionist " these days.So sorry, Digna, I

strongly disagree. The ppl up in Chicago lost my credibility long ago and that's

why I left the org few years ago and renewed my membership this year (mostly bc

I missed the dpg I was on, I missed nothing about the ADA, nothing at all, and

now I remember better why). This is not the first time ADA choses to ignore

members opinion. If you remember, few years ago I had a petition against the

PDP. I have over 3000 signatures and ADA ignored, never even invited me to a

meeting to see what could be done. All I got is an e-mail from Guilbride, ADA

president then, with 2 sentences, literally saying " thank you for choosing a

practice in the field of dietetics " or something to that effect. To say it was

dismissive is an understatement, so I have no reason to believe they want our

opinion now.But yes, that is my experience, my (and the 3000+ supporters)

misrepresentation.

consider this name change a way to be more appealing to the public, just like

the DMA did. New branding, new image.

Now it’s our turn, the members, to rebrand ourselves. Let’s be true

professionals, get out of our shells, and conquer the nutrition and health

world.

I don't imagine forming a new association is easy but googling " forming a

professional association " will bring you to a how to section and a guide to

planning and moving on it.

Digna, I disagree that the members voting on a name change would bring chaos. It

would be like changing the name of a country w/o consent of the citizens. The

idea of an association and democracy is to be self governing. For success, the

association and democracy is to build coalitions and support to move projects

and meet goals for members and communities. Definitely not easy; communication

is key.

The first thing we need to do is to see how many people feel the same way. I

know many ppl on this list are considering it but would not " dare " to come out

" publicly " . So, I suggest the follow:Any one on this list who is interesting in

another American Association of Dietitians (just a " on top my head " -name, I

promise, voting will be involved later) please e-mail me to this e-mail

(meravls@...) privately. Those of you who dont mind the " publicity " , post it

to this list, t might be encouraging for others to " come out " . Write in the

subject line: " New dietitians association - I'm in " and I will collect all the

names. Lets agree to do so By midnight of October 31st, 2011? or do we need more

time for this phase only?? Meanwhile - that would be greatly appreciated if all

of you spread the word that we are trying to establish a new org and e-mail that

message to any dietians' group you are associated with, to ensure we get maximum

exposure. I dont think there is a minimum that requires to " register " an

Org.Once we have 500 ppl, I would think it appropriate to have an " interim

Broad of directors " from this initial group. Then we will have to take some other

steps:Write Mission statement, bylaws etc.

Of course, we would not be able to " compete " with the " Academy " right away, but

we could soon after.

One thing I can assure you we will have that the Academy doesn't is : listening

to our members and every significant matter will be by members vote. Also,

personally, I would like to see more exposure of the new org, where we actually

make sure the public know we are the food, nutrition and dietetics experts, no

one else. I will make sure the public knows it, and not just a " mantra " for our

members (who know it, obviously).

OK, so this is a " rough draft " .Who says " I " ?

many RDs prefer to define themselves as Nutritionists. We may need to establish

what a nutritionist means, so the public is not confused with

non-RD-nutritionists and with chiropractors for example. Before such definition

is done, for the pubic sake, we will have to use the word Dietitians somewhere

in the org name. But anyway you look at it, " Academy " is the incorrect name. At

any case, this is too soon to call. First we need to see interest.

Since we include nutrition in the new name will " nutritionists " come

across as dietitians? I think it's misleading for the public.

Also Digna,as far as elections goes, do we really know who we are voting for?I

know that for me, voting for ADA is more like the guessing game. All I know

about the nominees is what they want me to know in this short Bio they write

about themselves.

Just look at it - so much work is done in Capital Hill, yet the public still

doesnt know what is the difference between RD, nutritionist (non RD) or what

even RD means.

Well, I didn’t consider the name of the association when I chose my career.

It’s only a name. And with changes there’s always someone who’s happy and

someone who’s not. Can’t please everyone.

Definitely not easy; communication

is key.

Now that I'm doing home health I find that if I tell the client when I call for

appointments that I'm a registered dietitian it evolves into a long silence or

" ju? " or questions about what is that? So I have formed the habit of telling

them I'm a nutritionist with the so & so agency and they've sent me a referral for

nutrition. It's cut my call time by half and they understand we're going to talk

about food. When I arrive I hand my card w RD on it, then explain briefly my

title and specialty. It's made it much easier in both Spanish and English.

Merav,

You know it's fine with me when we disagree. It's not the first time, and

probably won't be the last. The important thing is that dialogues are opened,

friendly and agreeably, and sometimes one party changes their mind, other times,

each of us remains of the same opinion. That's the purpose of constructive

debate; to inform others of our point of view, and learn the opinion of as many

ppl as possible.

I do remember our joint efforts and they were a good larning experience then, as

it will be now.

A conference call or web conference? That would have been excellent use of

technology. We did get the email, though.

As I recall the membership was surveyed about a name change a year or so ago. I

don't think that the proposed name change AND was included.

The definition of ACADEMY .quoted in the announcement is the 3rd definition in

Websters Collegiate Edition

I agree with those who have stated their disappointment  that AMERICAN has not

been included in our new name.

:)Exactly. I am also doing so one client/one opportunity at a time. I don't have

a private practice but I recently started teaching nutrition to PAs. The

introduction part of my first class was to explain what RD is, what it takes to

become one and what specialties we may have. Throughout the course I emphasized

referrals to us :)

Now that I'm doing home health I find that if I tell the client when I

call for appointments that I'm a registered dietitian it evolves into a long

silence or " ju? " or questions about what is that? So I have formed the habit of

telling them I'm a nutritionist with the so & so agency and they've sent me a

referral for nutrition. It's cut my call time by half and they understand we're

going to talk about food. When I arrive I hand my card w RD on it, then explain

briefly my title and specialty. It's made it much easier in both Spanish and

English.

Absolutly, my friend. I know I learned a lot from our debates here :)I like it

when people are open for a debate and welcome new opinions, even if at the end

we still agree to disagree.

No, you cannot please everyone. We agree on this one :)But to change from

" Association " which is what we are, to " Academy " which we are not.... not ADA,

nor CDR are training us. This is not West Point. ADA had nothing to do with our

" training " other then regulating it, which is the job of the association. They

do not teach us Nutrition 101, but regulate which college is good enough to do

that. Therefore a name that includes " Academy " is completely misleading. If they

have changed to something like Nutrition and Dietetics National Association, I

would not argue. And if not everyone liked it, I would say what you did: " Tough

luck " . NOt everyone could agree and/or like one name, but again, changing from

assoc. to academy is downgrading, I feel, and will just contribute more to the

pubic misinterpretation and misrepresentation of us. After all, we came to ADA

during our internships or after, after we chose a path, not before. and that, to

me, is a big difference. If we were an academy, when would I become an " alumni " ,

when I retire? when I d/c my membership? both?A bit odd.In all aspects of

education and career path, you first become a student in an " academy " , then you

get your degree and become an " associate " , not the other way around.

Well, I didn’t consider the name of the association when I chose my

career. It’s only a name. And with changes there’s always someone who’s happy

and someone who’s not. Can’t please everyone.

Definitely not easy; communication

is key.

YOu know, now that you say that, I remember something very vaguely about the

intention/consideration of changing the name, but again, don't remember any list

of options to chose from and the initial email from ADA says that the board

chose, not by vote from members.

A conference call or web conference? That would have been excellent use of

technology. We did get the email, though.

I vaguely remember a survey last year at FNCE about the name change...

Re: ADA now the " Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics " ?

Raphaela
