YOu know, now that you say that, I remember something very vaguely about the

intention/consideration of changing the name, but again, don't remember any list

of options to chose from and the initial email from ADA says that the board

chose, not by vote from members.

A conference call or web conference? That would have been excellent use of

technology. We did get the email, though.

hi, Jan,

I wondered who would be first to respond. Makes me uneasy that members weren't

part of the decision. This 'change' is a little too autocratic for me. no vote

from the membership? And what was all that concern when the dietary managers

voted to change the name of their 'association'? I wonder what this does to the

governance of the 'association'? I like including nutrition in the name but

don't think a unilateral change to academy is appropriate. What about the

Fellows of the American Dietetic Association, a designation no longer available.

Do they become former FADAs? Raphaela

:)only one difference, most Presidential candidates have some political record

that appeals or not to us. The ADA nominees....we see a brief of their resume

and 2-3 sentences of promises that we hope they will keep. and one more thing:

How long is their term? Isn't it 1 year?

What I don't get is that if there is such a push at the state level to

distinguish between dietitians and nutritionists, why does " nutrition " even

need to be in the name of the organization?

" An academy is " a society of learned persons organized to advance science " "

Only 99% of the average population would not associate academy this way. oops, I

used the word " associate " again. Me bad ;)That's what happens when you try to

hard.In the same letter from President Escott-Stump she states the name ADA

" served us well " since 1917. So.... as the old say: If its not broken why fix

it? Would you say it is because someone wanted really hard to be remembered in

the Hx pages???????

As I recall the membership was surveyed about a name change a year or so

ago. I don't think that the proposed name change AND was included.

The definition of ACADEMY .quoted in the announcement is the 3rd definition in

Websters Collegiate Edition

I agree with those who have stated their disappointment that AMERICAN has not

been included in our new name.

Re: ADA now the " Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics " ?

Raphaela

There is also the American Academy of Family Physicians. And this is the

difference between these academies and us: " Pediatrics " and " ED " are

subspecilties. Nutrition is not a subspeciality. We are having hard time

establishing ourselves as " specialties " and before we accomplished that status,

we go and make it like a sub-speciality. There could be, later, the academy for

Onc RDs, Academy for Geri RDs etc, but not Academy for RDs.

other professional groups do use the word academy. For example - American

Academy of Pediatrics and Academy for Eating Disorders.

The Society for Nutrition Education (SNE) is proposing changing the name of that

organization and recently the membership was asked to vote on the name change.

I wonder why ADA did not ask us to vote? I know SNE is much smaller - but they

just sent out a web based survey that cost nothing

I also wonder how the name of JADA will be affected? will they change the

journal name too?

because we aim on being the only specialist, or The Authority when it comes to

nutrition, not just dietetics. We dont want any one who is not RD to be able to

call themselves " nutritionists " which will imply they are specialists in that

field, and will subject the public to inappropriate nutritional care.

What I don't get is that if there is such a push at the state level to

distinguish between dietitians and nutritionists, why does " nutrition " even

need to be in the name of the organization?

Tried to get this started a few years back. First there are several small groups

of dietitians out there that are not associated with ADA. I believe the

Pediatric Dietetic group in Washington or Oregon is not associated with ADA THe

next barrier is to get CDR to recognize the group. It would not do to have the

CDR say we will not register you if you are a member of XYZ. Believe me it could

happen. Personally I like the Medical Nutrition Therapist of America, but that

is just me. It is time consuming but not really overly hard to start and

organization. The government has lots of info on how to do it.

know many ppl on this list are considering it but would not " dare " to come out

" publicly " . So, I suggest the follow:Any one on this list who is interesting in

another American Association of Dietitians (just a " on top my head " -name, I

promise, voting will be involved later) please e-mail me to this e-mail

(meravls@...) privately. Those of you who dont mind the " publicity " , post it

to this list, t might be encouraging for others to " come out " . Write in the

subject line: " New dietitians association - I'm in " and I will collect all the

names. Lets agree to do so By midnight of October 31st, 2011? or do we need more

time for this phase only?? Meanwhile - that would be greatly appreciated if all

of you spread the word that we are trying to establish a new org and e-mail that

message to any dietians' group you are associated with, to ensure we get maximum

exposure. I dont think there is a minimum that requires to " register " an

Org.Once we have 500 ppl, I would think it appropriate to have an " interim Broad

of directors " from this initial group. Then we will have to take some other

steps:Write Mission statement, bylaws etc.

> Of course, we would not be able to " compete " with the " Academy " right away,

but we could soon after.

> One thing I can assure you we will have that the Academy doesn't is :

listening to our members and every significant matter will be by members

vote. Also, personally, I would like to see more exposure of the new org, where

we actually make sure the public know we are the food, nutrition and dietetics

experts, no one else. I will make sure the public knows it, and not just a

" mantra " for our members (who know it, obviously).

I've heard about the name change off and on. Right after Labor day 40

RDs from 40 affiliates around the country gathered in Pittsburgh for

some specialized train the trainer sessions for a day and a half on

licensure issues, sponsored by ADA/CDR Then we attended sessions of the

CLEAR conference ( Council on Licensing and Regulation) for 2 days

ADA's name change was in the unofficial buzz among participants and many

were expecting an announcement at FNCE. The turnout from the states was

good for a conference that was only announced in June. it was

disappointing not to have all 50 states represented. Networking was

excellent.

Here's my take on the timing, as I explained to another e list whose

members may not have worked with CDMs:

I believe a BIG part of this name change is a reaction to the

announcement earlier from DMA The Dietary Manager's Association (

14,000 members) http://www.dmaonline.org/ to become the Association of

Nutrition and Food Service Professionals effective Jan 1, 2012.

Their members did vote on the name change. Although DMA has an RD on

staff and is also in Chicago ADA staff apparently didn't hear of the

proposed change until the members were already voting about it on

line. The rub for ADA is that the minimum academic credential to take the

90 hour course to become a CDM is only a GED and CDMs for the most part

consider themselves dedicated food service experts but hardly nutrition

professionals. These people are the backbone of food service operations

especially in nursing homes and of course work under RDs who are

responsible for clinical decisions. And yes there are and continue to

be cases where administrators give more responsibility to CDMs than

their training allows to reduce RD hours.

ADA did react in a letter to DMA as the voting was going on.

I wonder how long AND will retain the " formerly the American Dietetic

Association " tagline.

That's an excellent way of reaching a very important component of our healthcare

team. I am hoping that the seniors I visit in their homes will remember enough

and provide the handouts and information to their children and other family or

friends. I know those in the senior center I just started teaching in are

anxious to hear what I have to say and I already have a mile long list of topics

of interest they want to discuss bc as they say, you can't believe everything

you read. Digna

from the membership? And what was all that concern when the dietary managers

voted to change the name of their 'association'? I wonder what this does to the

governance of the 'association'? I like including nutrition in the name but

don't think a unilateral change to academy is appropriate. What about the

Fellows of the American Dietetic Association, a designation no longer available.

Do they become former FADAs? Raphaela

Merav,

English is both our second language. My husband believes it's a correct and

appropriate term. English is his first language and he has an excellent command

of all its intricacies, meanings and innuendoes.

Re: ADA now the " Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics " ?

I don't imagine forming a new association is easy but googling " forming a

professional association " will bring you to a how to section and a guide to

planning and moving on it.

Digna, I disagree that the members voting on a name change would bring chaos. It

would be like changing the name of a country w/o consent of the citizens. The

idea of an association and democracy is to be self governing. For success, the

association and democracy is to build coalitions and support to move projects

and meet goals for members and communities. Definitely not easy; communication

is key.

I've had the advantage that I've known many of the nominees in the past even if

not on a personal basis, and many others when they were " just regular people " ,

and some others I met during or after their tenure.

Re: ADA now the " Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics " ?

Raphaela

OK, so here it is, We're members of AND, read the JAND, and will no longer

be confused with the ADA & the ADA. And I sure home the logo doesn't end in

" ... " or " ? " Some ppl may think we're rude and say " whatever " instead of

" what? "

Endless possibilities here.

Why would the logo change? I think only the letters will change.

Traditionally these change when supplies run out, don't they? At least

that's what I would do.

Re: Re: ADA now the " Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics " ?

Tried to get this started a few years back. First there are several

small groups of dietitians out there that are not associated with ADA. I

believe the Pediatric Dietetic group in Washington or Oregon is not

associated with ADA THe next barrier is to get CDR to recognize the group.

It would not do to have the CDR say we will not register you if you are a

member of XYZ. Believe me it could happen. Personally I like the Medical

Nutrition Therapist of America, but that is just me. It is time consuming

but not really overly hard to start and organization. The government has

lots of info on how to do it.

I know many ppl on this list are considering it but would not " dare " to come

out " publicly " . So, I suggest the follow:Any one on this list who is

interesting in another American Association of Dietitians (just a " on top my

head " -name, I promise, voting will be involved later) please e-mail me to

this e-mail (meravls@...) privately. Those of you who dont mind the

" publicity " , post it to this list, t might be encouraging for others to

" come out " . Write in the subject line: " New dietitians association - I'm in "

and I will collect all the names. Lets agree to do so By midnight of October

31st, 2011? or do we need more time for this phase only?? Meanwhile - that

would be greatly appreciated if all of you spread the word that we are

trying to establish a new org and e-mail that message to any dietians' group

you are associated with, to ensure we get maximum exposure. I dont think

there is a minimum that requires to " register " an Org.Once we have 500 ppl,

I would think it appropriate to have an " interim Broad of directors " from

this initial group. Then we will have to take some other steps:Write Mission

statement, bylaws etc.

> Of course, we would not be able to " compete " with the " Academy " right

away, but we could soon after.

> One thing I can assure you we will have that the Academy doesn't is :

listening to our members and every significant matter will be by members

vote. Also, personally, I would like to see more exposure of the new org,

where we actually make sure the public know we are the food, nutrition and

dietetics experts, no one else. I will make sure the public knows it, and

not just a " mantra " for our members (who know it, obviously).

Subject: Re: Re: ADA now the " Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics " ?

CDR only requirement is that we complete the required academic curriculum,

internship & /or masters degree, and maintain the CPUs every 5 years. It has

nothing to do with being an ADA member which is the reason there was a

separation of the two entities years ago. Anyone has a right to form a

group, but if they desire the approval, auspices and other privileges, then

the group needs the ADA approval, and all members of that group also have to

be members of ooppps! AND.

Subject: Re: Re: ADA now the " Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics " ?

Tried to get this started a few years back. First there are several small

groups of dietitians out there that are not associated with ADA. I believe

the Pediatric Dietetic group in Washington or Oregon is not associated with

ADA THe next barrier is to get CDR to recognize the group. It would not do

to have the CDR say we will not register you if you are a member of XYZ.

Believe me it could happen. Personally I like the Medical Nutrition

Therapist of America, but that is just me. It is time consuming but not

really overly hard to start and organization. The government has lots of

info on how to do it.

I know many ppl on this list are considering it but would not " dare " to come

out " publicly " . So, I suggest the follow:Any one on this list who is

interesting in another American Association of Dietitians (just a " on top my

head " -name, I promise, voting will be involved later) please e-mail me to

this e-mail (meravls@... <mailto:meravls%40msn.com> ) privately. Those

of you who dont mind the " publicity " , post it to this list, t might be

encouraging for others to " come out " . Write in the subject line: " New

dietitians association - I'm in " and I will collect all the names. Lets

agree to do so By midnight of October 31st, 2011? or do we need more time

for this phase only?? Meanwhile - that would be greatly appreciated if all

of you spread the word that we are trying to establish a new org and e-mail

that message to any dietians' group you are associated with, to ensure we

get maximum exposure. I dont think there is a minimum that requires to

" register " an Org.Once we have 500 ppl, I would think it appropriate to have

an " interim Broad of directors " from this initial group. Then we will have to

take some other steps:Write Mission statement, bylaws etc.

> OK, so this is a " rough draft " .Who says " I " ?
