Guest guest
What we do professionally has nothing to do with anything except nutrition. I can’t see any other name for us. And, since CDM appropriate the nutrition word I think we had to put our claim on it too. That’s just my personal opinion on it. Guest guest
Well, I did comment yesterday that it should been ADN instead of AND. As Digna stated, the name of my professional organization does not define the professional I am. Listen, we can debate this until the cows come home. Quickly, it is what it is. I don't have the time or fortitude to debate what is what it is. The decision has been made, debating it won't change it. Be patient with my typing, I am replying on my Blackberry. Re: ADA now the " Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics " ? One only needs ADA/AND approval for DPGs within ADA/AND. If one wants to form an association, the process (involved and not easy) has nothing to do with ADA/AND, just as the DMA, now nutrition and food service professionals did not need ADA (not AND at the time) to approve. Licensing does not need ADA/AND approval but as an association provided support and comments. And,(not AND) does not approve this particular EML. So far no one who belongs to DHCC has chosen to comment yet but that is the EML that ADA/AND has some control over as a moderator. Guest guest
Very interesting and sad that ADA panics and reacted to another org name change. Again, if ADA would have bothered to just up the PR and make sure the public recognizes us as the Food, Nutrition and Dietetics specialists, CDMs would have had a bigger problem: Realizing they have a meaningless name for their org. But instead, we are now stuck in " limbo " . We weren't even born yet, in the eyes of the public, but we were given a new name already. Soon we will become the " and " not the " A " " N " " D " ...hopefully that wold not be the E-N-D Merav Levi, RD, MS, CDN, CSGA dietitian, not the food police. http://www.linkedin.com/in/meravlevi " Life is not measured by the number of breath you take, but by the moments that take your breath away. Right after Labor day 40 RDs from 40 affiliates around the country gathered in Pittsburgh for some specialized train the trainer sessions for a day and a half on licensure issues, sponsored by ADA/CDR Then we attended sessions of the CLEAR conference ( Council on Licensing and Regulation) for 2 days ADA's name change was in the unofficial buzz among participants and many were expecting an announcement at FNCE. The turnout from the states was good for a conference that was only announced in June. it was disappointing not to have all 50 states represented. Networking was excellent. Here's my take on the timing, as I explained to another e list whose members may not have worked with CDMs: I believe a BIG part of this name change is a reaction to the announcement earlier from DMA The Dietary Manager's Association ( 14,000 members) http://www.dmaonline.org/ to become the Association of Nutrition and Food Service Professionals effective Jan 1, 2012. Their members did vote on the name change. Although DMA has an RD on staff and is also in Chicago ADA staff apparently didn't hear of the proposed change until the members were already voting about it on line. The rub for ADA is that the minimum academic credential to take the 90 hour course to become a CDM is only a GED and CDMs for the most part consider themselves dedicated food service experts but hardly nutrition professionals. These people are the backbone of food service operations especially in nursing homes and of course work under RDs who are responsible for clinical decisions. And yes there are and continue to be cases where administrators give more responsibility to CDMs than their training allows to reduce RD hours. ADA did react in a letter to DMA as the voting was going on. I wonder how long AND will retain the " formerly the American Dietetic Association " tagline. This 'change' is a little too autocratic for me. no vote from the membership? And what was all that concern when the dietary managers voted to change the name of their 'association'? I wonder what this does to the governance of the 'association'? I like including nutrition in the name but don't think a unilateral change to academy is appropriate. I wonder what this does to the governance of the 'association'? I like including nutrition in the name but don't think a unilateral change to academy is appropriate. Guest guest
ADA has to consider the situation for all affiliates. Some states states license or certify nutritionists. Guest guest
Digna, I do not question the proper English, for the reasons you mentioned. BUT, most people will not think of it that way and if we want to speak to the public, we better speak " public " . and every business owner will tell you that te name is crucial for the business. YOu what a name that ppl can associate with, can remember and get back to. I don't think Academy does that.I'll be happy to be proven wrong. I don't imagine forming a new association is easy but googling " forming a professional association " will bring you to a how to section and a guide to planning and moving on it. Digna, I disagree that the members voting on a name change would bring chaos. It would be like changing the name of a country w/o consent of the citizens. The idea of an association and democracy is to be self governing. For success, the association and democracy is to build coalitions and support to move projects and meet goals for members and communities. Definitely not easy; communication is key. Guest guest
This is my concern too. Diane Preves Re: ADA now the " Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics " ? > > hi, Jan, > I wondered who would be first to respond. Makes me uneasy that members weren't part of the decision. This 'change' is a little too autocratic for me. no vote from the membership? And what was all that concern when the dietary managers voted to change the name of their 'association'? I wonder what this does to the governance of the 'association'? I like including nutrition in the name but don't think a unilateral change to academy is appropriate. Guest guest
Members voting on a name change does NOT bring chaos--our very well-grounded church just did such in a very orderly, everyone involved way. Changed a name that was previously held for generations. It took a year but the process impressed me--suggestions from the membership (with prayerful consideration), pastoral retreat and meetings, back to membership with the majority ideas, back to pastoral processes, back to membership with a vote. In the end everyone was happy with the result and felt secure in our leadership and organization. What a contrast with ADA announcement. What a shame. All that advertising that was finally reaching the public about the credibility of the American Dietetic Association . . . how much more money will have to be spent to reconnect with the public? Diane Preves, M.S., R.D. N.E.W. LIFE (Nutrition, Exercise, Wellness for LIFE) www.newlifeforhealth.com e-mail: newlife4health@..., newlife@... Re: ADA now the " Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics " ? I don't imagine forming a new association is easy but googling " forming a professional association " will bring you to a how to section and a guide to planning and moving on it. Digna, I disagree that the members voting on a name change would bring chaos. It would be like changing the name of a country w/o consent of the citizens. The idea of an association and democracy is to be self governing. For success, the association and democracy is to build coalitions and support to move projects and meet goals for members and communities. Definitely not easy; communication is key. Guest guest
Well, this one made me laugh outloud bc bw the two of us including both acronyms I've managed to lose track of the message. I guess we can just use the one we're comfortable with for now until we get used to the new one and switch. Using both has my head swimming in circles. Are you saying no other DPG is under the ADA auspices at this time? Not NE? none? Hmmm, I thought there were more for some reason. I'll have to go look them up and see for myself bc truthfully I haven't. But when I complete my annual dues form there seems to be an endless list of them to chose from. Guest guest
well, it won't be misleading if both " nutritionists " and Dietitians will be RDs, but that will take not only national recognition but a state-by-state license. ADA has to consider the situation for all affiliates. Some states states license or certify nutritionists. Some license or certify dietitians. Some licenses and certifications are voluntary for various reasons although protection for the public is potentially compromised when this occurs. Looking at this link gives a good picture of the spectrum of legal situations for RDs. http://www.cdrnet.org/certifications/licensure/index.cfm. I'm fortunate to be in a state with mandatory licensure, with exclusivity. To be a Licensed Nutritionist one must be a Registered Dietitian.
