Guest guest
And then there’s California!!!! L From: rd-usa [mailto:rd-usa ] On Behalf Of Pat Bollinger Sent: Sunday, September 25, 2011 8:14 PM To: rd-usa Subject: Re: Re: ADA now the " Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics " ? ADA has to consider the situation for all affiliates. Some states states license or certify nutritionists. Some license or certify dietitians. Some licenses and certifications are voluntary for various reasons although protection for the public is potentially compromised when this occurs. Looking at this link gives a good picture of the spectrum of legal situations for RDs. http://www.cdrnet.org/certifications/licensure/index.cfm. I'm fortunate to be in a state with mandatory licensure, with exclusivity. To be a Licensed Nutritionist one must be a Registered Dietitian. Guest guest
I realize that. But as Carol just said, it is what it is, and that's not changing. I still have to get up every morning and get to work - difference is I no longer have to wear a suit. Digna Re: ADA now the " Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics " ? I don't imagine forming a new association is easy but googling " forming a professional association " will bring you to a how to section and a guide to planning and moving on it. Digna, I disagree that the members voting on a name change would bring chaos. It would be like changing the name of a country w/o consent of the citizens. The idea of an association and democracy is to be self governing. For success, the association and democracy is to build coalitions and support to move projects and meet goals for members and communities. Definitely not easy; communication is key. Personally ADA certainly could have had a better plan to reach out to the membership prior to an administrative decision. Surveys, focus groups would have been good. As I posted in an earlier email the regulatory structures for RDs are so different across the country that the task of identifying a brand is more difficult. Pat Bollinger, MS RD LN Follow the bread crumb trail... For years ADA has wanted to require a Master's Degree minimum and is inching closer and closer to that if you read between the lines...remember that future practice conferences that look out 10 years have brought up what skill sets will be needed in future practice scenarios; ADA EAL Evidence Analysts all have at least a Master's Degree; many dietetic internships are now combined internship and Master's Programs or run through universities that also happen to offer Master's Degrees...all of that fits in with the concept of an " Academy " ... Guest guest
I did receive a survey from the former ADA several months ago requesting input regarding a name change for our professional organization, including name suggestions. I feel like I had adequate input. Ann Ann Merritt, MS, RD, LD > It's a very confusing title, and I am insulted that the name was not even given a vote by the members!!!!! Given the chance, I would have NEVER voted for this one. Did we all even get a chance to SUGGEST names? > > If I were not an RD, and I looked at this name, I would immediately think it was a specialized place to study and obtain a degree in the field of nutrition and dietetics. > > We pay a lot of money yearly to belong to the organisation!! Why is everything so secretive? > > Jacquelyn A. Pressly, RD, CLT > The NATURAL dietitian > Specializing in Wellness and Prevention, Personal Nutrition Coaching > and Designer Lifestyle Plans to help you get on the health track > Northeast Ohio & Western Pennsylvania > Internet and telecounseling available for distance clients > > jpress50@... > > If you are what you eat, then dietitians are the doctors of the future > > Re: ADA now the " Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics " ? > > hi, Jan, > I wondered who would be first to respond. Makes me uneasy that members weren't part of the decision. This 'change' is a little too autocratic for me. no vote from the membership? And what was all that concern when the dietary managers voted to change the name of their 'association'? I wonder what this does to the governance of the 'association'? Guest guest
I would be one. The only reason I re-joined ADA (well, it was still ADA in July) is the DPGs. If you could join DPGs without being ADA member, I would do that in a heartbeat. Attention DPGs -Chairs: Food for thought for you. Consider to open your membership to non-AND memebers. I would be willing to join more groups even if I pay higher price, lets say $50 instead of the usual $30 per group. Your DPG will have much more revenue! The requirement to be a member of the national organization to join any DPG or the state organization has always bugged me. No other professional organization is set up that way. But I am willing to bet that if they allowed membership by non-members to these groups, even more members would drop out of the national organization (regardless of its name) than already have. Just another example of the the self serving interest of the national organization, no matter what it is called. Guest guest
I, too, would be in DRGs and in my State organization if ADA/AND membership were not a primary requirement. I always found those groups to be beneficial; but not worth the ADA/AND membership price increases. So everything got dropped. Guest guest
Pat, I appreciate you share that but:When you want to change a name of an org that was struggling for its recognition in the public, you dont want to change into something that average Joe will not associate with. For average Joe " academy " means school of some kind, not an org where a group of specialists are joined-in. So this is the first problem I have with " academy " . The other issue - just because there are many MS/MA among us has nothing to do with who we are. I was never the type to be impressed by titles and acronyms and degrees. My sister, who had great influence on my life, who also had many degrees from BA to PhD, said: " ppl go to college with X knowledge and come out with " X+1 " knpwldge. That doesn't make them better people " . And to extend that even more - that doesn't even mean they are better practicionars. We all know MDs who are horrible practitioners, yet, they managed to get the degree and pass the board exam. Unfortunately, it is true for our profession too. That's why I am not a pusher for MS. The point I am trying to make - MS/MA aside, the public yet to recognize us as the specialists in nutrition and dietetics, so name change is pre-mature, confusing and in my opinion, will make it harder for the public to recognize. It is sad, bc many members are mostly quite and just " get over this and accept the ruling " even if it was done without great consideration of members votes. Call me a chauvinist, but I find it very traditional-faminin behavior, which, needless to say, I am not a fan of. And bc of that majority behavior, ADA/AND gets to do things with less consideration of us. There are so many more things that members are concerned with, yet, ADA decided to push the agenda of name change bc another org chanced their name??????Take the $$$ and energy that name change takes and put it into a big campaign of " who are the FOOD, NUtrition and Dietetics REAL Professionals " are? The author is an MS RD CDN who works in NYS: I include it for her perspective. I can think of three specific times I read something in past months that forebode what was coming...
