Guest guest
The recent discussion about birthday treats made me want to pose this question. What is your opinion of snacks at school/sports? In light of all of the increases in childhood obesity, this really drives me crazy! I don't work with kids, but I don't think a snack is necessary during the school day or after a one hour sports practice. Am I wrong to think that my second grade daughter does not need a 10:00 am snack, especially when lunch is at 11:30? They didn't get one at day care, why do they need on in elementary school? We have to send a snack that fits in with the school's " wellness policy. " Not a big deal to send one, but I don't think it is necessary. Also, my 5 year old just started soccer this year. They practice and play for one hour after dinner. Parents have to rotate bringing a snack for the team. There is no wellness policy and I guess in the past they used to get a half time and end of session snack. One snack is an improvement over two, but again, is it really necessary? The kids either just ate supper or are about to. Do they need a capri sun and fruit snacks? Just curious. I think I can take up the soccer snack because I know I'm not the only parent that thinks it is ridiculous. I'm not sure about the school one, though--that just seems like more work than I have time for. Thanks! Becky srud RD, CD
