Guest guest
I am on MTX and my doctor told me a small drink every now and then would be ok. Just not to much alcohol in the drink is all. skiplw284 <skiplw284@...> wrote: I used to take Methotrexate many years ago and my Rhematologist told me that one drink a month would probably be alright. I enjoyed a glass of Red wine a couple of times a week. Right now I am staying away from my wine. But I would like to be able to have a glass of wine with dinner when my husband and I go out. I would appreciate any information that any one could give me. Thanks and the Best of 2008 to everyone. Skip Just me, Vicky --------------------------------- Looking for last minute shopping deals? Guest guest
Wow, this is such a subject to me right now. I've been on methotrexate for 7 years now and boy do I miss drinking. Now don't get me wrong, it's not like I'm an alcoholic or something but I really like 2 drinks on a weekend night, is that a crime! New Years was the hardest this year, the group I spent the holiday with are planning to go to Italy next year, how about not drinking there, yuk! Right now I try to limit myself to 1 a month but I do cheat sometimes and have 2 a month, weeks apart. I do plan to have a major discussion with my primary in two weeks about this subject. I started Remicade 6 months ago and I thought that my methotrexate would come down but he hasn't decreased yet, I'm hoping that he says we can come down to one and that will free up the restrictions. I also just had a conversation with my best friend yesterday, she's a nurse, on this subject and she said that there is some stuff (for want of a better word) out there, I forget the name, that they give to patients when they are getting dye for xrays so it isn't absorbed by the liver, would this help? My doc originally said one glass of wine a month was okay but I hate wine and beer, mixed coctails are my drink of choice. Sorry, just needed to vent on this subject. Guest guest
Hi Skip, my rheummy told me that it's ok to have a glass of wine, or even two, but not to have a big " session " . I probably have about 4 glasses of red wine a week, especially during the holiday season, and about the same of light beer, about 2.5 percent alcohol, as it is a hot summer here. I guess everybody's body reacts differently, I have regular monthly blood tests and my liver function is perfect, so I feel comfortable continuing as I am. Good luck, and Cheers!! Guest guest
Hi , I did also hear very negative things about drinking while on Methotrexate - especially the days closer to your intake day. I'm sorry that I can't remember the exact problems associated with it right now, but I do know that we switched my son's medication day so that it would be least problematic IF he decided to take a drink - he's only 15... He doesn't even drink yet, but his doctor was concerned enough that we switched his injection day so that he was at the least amount of risk. Hope this helps. He isn't on the Methotrexate or Enbrel anymore, so I haven't had to worry about it for a while now... My Ruemy advised against it, but didn't sound like it was * that* important. Does anyone know more about the specific risks of drinking while taking MTX? What about risks of having 1-2 drinks versus drinking a lot in one night? Thanks -
Guest guest
I was on MTX about a year ago. My husband and I like to open a bottle of wine, once in the while, usually one the weekends. I thought if I just limit myself to one glass of wine, I'd be fine. I woke up the next morning having a strange constricted feeling in my chest. It didn't feel very good at all and kind of scared me. This happened twice. I later read that MTX can cause some toxin buildup in the lungs and wondered if the mix of alcohol could exacerbate this. I have since been off of MTX but I highly discourage anyone to drink ANY ALCOHOL AT ALL while on the MTX.
