Guest guest
To Clarify – the question that was answered was when to start timing the 1 or 2 hours, from the first bite or the last. The answer and citation is provided in a previous email. From: rd-usa [mailto:rd-usa ] On Behalf Of Bruce Sent: Tuesday, January 17, 2012 10:57 AM To: rd-usa Subject: Re: SMBG I am intrigued/confused by this discussion. If you are wanting to see how one's meal is affecting blood sugars then check 1 and 2 hours after a meal, (postprandial). Ideally, if a pt. is on insulin, he/she needs to check her BG level before a meal. Then the pt. can use their sliding scale to determine how much insulin is needed to cover the meal and any elevated pre-meal glucose. I don't understand how a BG check 'after the first bite' helps. Guest guest
I'm so glad to have read through this discussion. Many of my residents take 2 hours to eat a simple meal such as a light lunch. And for many nursing gives them a 2 calorie supplement every couple of hours just to maintain their weight bc they will not eat. As I read the thread I kept wondering my usual " what if " for each case. Guest guest
It appears that some have misunderstood a simple question. I was exclusively asking whether the time to count a post prandial reading is from the first bite or the last bite. As to when or how often or at what interval a patient should test their blood sugars, that is always individualized/tailored to the patient. My questions was answered with documentation - the first bite.
