Guest guest Posted November 7, 2011 Report Share Posted November 7, 2011 DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND SPORT SCIENCES Position Announcement Position: Assistant Professor of Exercise and Sport Science within the Department of Health and Sport Sciences (HSS). Tenure Track Positions #003526 and #002770. Qualifications: An earned doctorate in the area of Exercise Science, Physiology, Bioenergetics, Nutrition, or a related area of study is required. Applicants with a focused research agenda involving human, animal, or cell culture work that ideally includes mechanistic studies, with an emphasis on health and disease, and/or physical functioning are desired. Post-doctoral training is desired but not required. Responsibilities: Candidates will be expected to develop an independent and externally funded research program. Undergraduate and graduate teaching responsibilities will also be expected, with possibilities for new course development specific to the candidate's area of expertise. Mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students will be expected. Service to the department, college, and university will also be required. Setting: The Department of HSS (http://www.memphis.edu/hss <http://www.memphis.edu/hss> ) is one of four departments within the College of Education (COE) and offers a B.S.Ed. degree in three majors: Sport and Leisure Management, Physical Education Teacher Education, and Health and Human Performance, including concentrations in Dietetics, Exercise and Sport Science, and Health Promotion, and the M.S. degree in two majors: Clinical Nutrition, and Health and Sport Science, including concentrations in Exercise and Sport Science, Health Promotion, Sport Commerce, and Physical Education Teacher Education. The department maintains an extensive University-wide physical activity program. There are approximately 800 undergraduate and graduate majors within HSS. The University of Memphis, a Tennessee Board of Regents institution, is recognized by the Carnegie Foundation as one of two public research universities and the only community engaged public university in Tennessee. It has six colleges and four professional schools serving a diverse population of about 23,000 students, 5,000 of whom are enrolled in graduate programs. Opportunities are available for collaboration with investigators at UT Health Science Center, LeBonheur Children's Hospital, and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, in addition to various medical device companies within the Memphis area. The University is strongly committed to its urban mission and outreach programs, and recognizes the diverse and integrated role played by faculty and administration in fulfilling a comprehensive mission of research, education, and community service. Salary and Beginning Date: Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications. The positions are nine-month appointments with options for paid summer teaching and/or externally-funded research responsibilities. A start-up package may be available to expand the capabilities of the Department Laboratories. The University offers an excellent benefits package, and the state of Tennessee currently has no state income tax. Memphis and the surrounding areas maintain a very low cost of living relative to most parts of the country. The anticipated date of employment is on or before August 20, 2012.
