insecurity. It provides information by state on SNAP statistics, the average

cost of a meal, food insecurity rates and the money needed to close the gap.

Bipartisan Health Care Reform Plan Is Released

Sen. Ron Wyden (Ore.) and Rep. (Wis.) have released a plan to reform

Medicare that they say will help reduce rising costs and improve health care for

all participants. The plan's principles include choice, affordability,

protecting the guarantee and protecting the safety net. One feature of the plan

would be to offer participants a choice between Medicare and private plans

starting in 2022. According to this plan, anyone who is 55 or older at the time

of the bill's passage would not see changes to his or her current plan.

'Doc Fix' Extended

The House and Senate agreed to extend the Sustainable Growth Rate for Medicare

reimbursements, known as the " Doc Fix, " for two months. The agreement postponed

a 27.4 percent reduction in physician and dietitian reimbursement until March 1.

Academy Submits Hospital Privileging Proposed Regulation Comments to CMS

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics submitted comments to the Centers for

Medicare and Medicaid Services regarding proposed changes to Hospital Conditions

of Participation. The Academy supports the proposed regulatory changes, which

should facilitate registered dietitians' ability to practice at the height of

their state scope of practice. In addition, the Academy urged CMS to provide

additional guidance regarding privileging and the ordering of therapeutic diets.

FDA Seeks Food Advisory Committee Nominations

The Food and Drug Administration's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition

is seeking the nomination of experts in epidemiology, pediatric development and

analytical chemistry or food science to serve on the FDA's Food Advisory

Committee.

USDA Releases Online " Nutrition SuperTracker "

The U.S. Department of Agriculture released its new Nutrition SuperTracker: " a

comprehensive, state-of-the-art resource available at ChooseMyPlate.gov designed

to assist individuals as they make changes in their life to reduce their risk of

chronic disease and maintain a healthy weight. " The SuperTracker is a free

online tool that consumers can access at any time, providing a variety of

features to support nutrition and physical activity goals.

of the U.S. Department of Defense. Ms. was recognized for extraordinary

As the largest provider of dietetic scholarships, the Academy of Nutrition and

Dietetics Foundation provides funding to deserving students at all levels of

study. More than 1,600 students have been awarded scholarships in the last five

years, totaling nearly $2.8 million. Graduate scholarships, dietetic internship

scholarships undergraduate (didactic or coordinated) scholarships and dietetic

technician scholarships are all available. The application deadline is February

15.

The Foundation has a new scholarship opportunity for students. The Academy of

Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation/ConAgra Foods' Food Safety Student Challenge

was developed around the Home Food Safety campaign. Nine scholarships of $4,500
