Guest guest
This is a little old news on Lyrica but clarified my understanding (I think). Lyrica Now Available to Patients By Kerrie | September 21, 2005 Pfizer announced today that Lyrica (pregabalin) is now available for doctors to prescribe to patients. The drug is indicated for use for neuropathic pain and seizures, but has also shown to improve patients' sleep patterns. A successor to Neurontin (gabapentin), the two drugs act similarly in the body. Of course the chemical structure is slightly different (and beyond my understanding), but one obvious difference is that Lyrica is more potent, which makes it effective at lower doses. This in turn decreases the likelihood of side effects. The FDA won't let Pfizer mention this, but Lyrica, like Neurontin, is likely to be prescribed to headache patients off-label. And, based on a conversation with my headache specialist, it's a potentially exciting new option for prevention. Even with his endorsement, I'm a little skeptical. You see, the FDA has approved the manufacturing of gabapentin as a generic. Once the generic is available, sales of Neurontin, also a Pfizer drug, will drop. Lyrica could become to Neurontin like Clariniex is to Claritin. It's too soon to tell if Lyrica will be a significant new drug for headache patients or if it will another name-brand moneymaker. For all our sakes, I've got my fingers crossed for the first option.
Guest guest
Thank you all so much for the input. I started taking the Neurontin on Sunday. It does dope me up quite a bit but my sister in law told me to keep taking it and it will get better. But thank you again and I wish you all a pain free day !! ________________________________________________________________________________\ ____ Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Mobile. Guest guest
Hi Joyce, I have had nerve pain in my hands, and back for at least the past two years. When it first started up, I tried Neurontin. It made me so groggy and it was very hard for me to get up in the morning for work. My family doctor switched me to Lyrica which has helped the pain in my hands much better. I was on it probably one year while I was still working at a clerical job. About one year ago, I left my clerical job and went on short-term disability due to the pain in my hands and my need for spinal fusion surgery. They fused T10 to L5 due to a 50+ degree scoliosis last September. I have continued to use the Lyrica because even though I have not gone back to work, I continue to have sharp shooting pains in my hands with overuse. Guest guest
Hi Joyce, I don't think I ever got over the morning drag and I did not get enough pain relief from neurontin. Guest guest
Hi everyone I'm new to this group. I've been on both Neurontin and Lyrica for Fibromyalgia and really bad pain in my back (I had Harrington rods put in 27 years ago and now my body has done it's own compensating.) I got up to 1800mg of Neurontin a day with a WHOLE lot of pain relief but I just kept getting dumber and dumber. It finally got to the point where I got lost four city blocks from my house. And it made me mean. I mean, normally I am a very peaceful, quiet person but I was actually yelling at my roommate shortly before I quit taking it. Not me at all. My doctor started me on Lyrica and gradually increased the dose to 300 mg a day but it started making me stupid just like the Neurontin. I decreased to 150mg a day and don't have a problem with it. Some pain relief with it. No other side effects from either medication. I just went through a six week stint at a pain control center (P.T., O.T., and psychologist) going three times a week. Did quite a bit of good but I'm still relying on the good 'ole trusted Hydrocodone.
