I do know that when I kept getting sick this winter, I asked my

pharmacist if there was anything I could do to help my immune system

get stronger to fight off everything I was getting. She started to

suggest some vitamin C products and such, then paused and said, " But

you are on immunosuppressants for your RA " , she paused, then admitted

that to build my immune system my counter what my drugs where doing

for me! Stumped, she suggested I talk to my Rhuematologist!

It is tricky, isn't it?!

Because our immune systems are out of whack. They are attacking our own

bodies. The meds for RA suppress some part of the immune system. So the

question was should we try to strengthen it more when it's already too

strong. I hope I haven't confused you further.

My doctors advise me to take a multi vitamin and for colds they recommend cold

ez or zinc (which because I keep getting sick any way doesn't seem to

help)..here is an article I found that might help

Multivitamins are a rip off and zinc can damage your sense of smell. Your

doctor must not be very knowledgeable.

My two cents:

I've had RA for 27 years and have always been confused by this issue

too. It seems important to keep your immune system healthy but will it

just create more problems in an immune system that in other ways needs

to be suppressed? However I have found that keeping up with a good

quality multivitamin and at least 500 mg. extra of Vitamin C has

really kept colds at bay. If I do get a cold as I did recently from my

granddaughter, I take even more vitamin C. For me I have found no

better absorption than from Natrol* brand, now called Easy C, (ester

type).I also like Nature Made* Multi 50. I've tried many brands over

the years. I don't think a little zinc will hurt you, in general, I

think it's pretty good stuff.

Actually my doctor is one of the best there is and I don't take zinc unless I'm

getting a cold. Then I try those coldeze drops. My sense of smell is

completely fine. Multivitamins meaning a B12 is very good as in my family I

have several aunts that have to get b12 shots due to deficiency.

It confuses me what it does to keep a healthy immune system too. I drink that

Emergen-C occassionally and it seems to help me somewhat with colds as well.

I'm allergic to all antibiotics effective for respiratory infections except for

2 of them. I have a relative with RA who gets a couple of colds a year, but I

get one and it becomes an infection and lasts for months. I think from last

August until now, I only had two healthy months of no colds or infections. I

don't understand how no matter what I do, I constantly get infections and some

others I talk to, get a few colds, but some that do not last for months at a

time. I keep away from sick people, wear my mask, and keep everything

disinfected, as well as washing my hands constantly. It's a definite puzzle:)

I have IBS (like so many of us) and Emergen-C gives me severe

diarrhea. (sorry if that's too much info!). Take with caution! :-)

I have been so confused about this too! I asked my doctor about it

and he said it was fine to take echinacea and such. But it still

doesnt really make sense in my head. He also said that if I am really

sick I can skip my mtxt dose for that week so my immune system isnt

as low. I dont know, it is all still confusing for me.
