Hi Mandi, the drs are concerned b/c mtx is a class X drug when it comes to

pregnancy.  It's the same as acutane in which dr's require strict contraception

if they're going to prescribe a drug in that class.  A baby exposed to mtx

during critical periods of development is at risk for profound birth defects and

disability.  I'm sorry your doc came across harshly, but given the risks, they

have to communicate that it is a critical issue.

[ ] MTX & Forced Birth Control

Hi everyone I wanted to run something by you all and see if you have been

told something similar. When I was first put on MTX in February I was told

very clearly " do not get pregnant while taking MTX " and all the other warnings

that come with the drug and that was it.

Do to a language barrier I had to switch to a new RU in March who I thought

jokingly wrote a script stating " NO sex " . According to my new doctor a

condom is not adequate protection while on MTX. He will no longer prescribe me

MTX unless I begin taking birth control pills. I guess what I'm getting at

here is I felt like I was being scolded like a school girl (I'm 31 married with

a 2 year old) and I believe perfectly capable of preventing pregnancy.

Am I missing something from his point of view?

Hi Mandi,

If you read up on MTX, everything says use a reliable form of BC while

on MTX, man or woman. When I was on it, I was on BC and I recall my

last RD asking me if I was and then giving me all the warnings. But

the original RD who prescribed it never gave me the warnings at all.

My guess is that he personally is uncomfortable prescribing a

medication that could cause birth defects unless someone is on a form

of BC that is 99.9% effective. He probably has a personal stance on

abortion and being a contributor towards it. Condoms are less

effective than BC, so my guess is that it's a personal thing for him.

If you don't want to go on BC and he is unrelenting, you will probably

have to find a new RD. I am so sorry about this.

Mandi,

I had to sign some document saying that I was aware of potential birth defects

and I wouldn't get pregnant for two years after starting ARAVA. I don't

remember such discussion over MTX, but I agree it does feel a little weird to

have them refuse to prescribe something unless you are on Birth Control. I

think it is their call, though. Maybe each doc has his/her own criteria for

prescribing these meds that can cause such devastating birth defects. Funny

thing is, my period was late just one time and my husband freaked out so bad he

had a vasectomy the following week! That was one worry he just didn't need.

Neither of my doctors ever asked about b/c while I was on MTX.

I knew that it is a teratogen, I practice NFP.

(yes, I know that it is not 100% effective, but neither is anything else, so no

lectures please

;-)

I have migraine with brain lesions and stroke symptoms, so I cannot take any

hormonal

birth control, including the mini-pills, and I have been told not to do

depo-provera shots

either.

When I got the new rheum, I asked not to take MTX when I restarted the Remicade.

She

(mysteriously) did not put up a fight about it, and I was fine- no extra side

effects from

the Remicade (which is a category B med).

I was off MTX for a year before I got pg again.

For me, MTX was a total waste of time, as was the plaquenil. Neither did

anything for my

symptoms, although my CRP numbers did diminish.

I would assume most doctors would be extra cautious, although there are people

who

have had successful pregnancies even when conception was while on MTX.

That said, this guy sounds a bit arrogant. BC pills are not adequate protection,

if your

definition of adequate is 100%. Nothing is, except abstinence. Maybe he has had

a patient

get pg on the MTX? That would make him extra skittish.

Take care,

Di

Mandi,

I've been on MTX since I was a little kid but my RD never gave me a speach about

being on BC when I hit puberty.  I looked at my rx bottle and it does say not to

use if you are pregnant, suspect you are, or are breastfeeding.  And that's it.

I've never heard any of my docs say anything about it so I was a bit taken a

back by your post.  I hope you get all this resolved without to much more of an

issue.

I went to a shrink

To analyze my dreams

She says it's lack of sex

that's bringing me down

I went to a whore

So quit my whining cause

Hi Mandi!

I've not heard anything like that, and I know there are women here that are

pregnant and taking medications. I don't recall if anyone is on Methotrexate and

pregnant. I do know that Methotrexate or Enbrel is my next step of treatment.

I guarantee there will not be any doctor telling me that I must take birth

control while taking the medication. I'm 36 and have not been able to take

birth control in years as I am hypercoagulative and that could be life

threatening for me. Hopefully others here will have some views to share with

you...
