Tami - MTX can take up to 12 weeks to show improvement. The reason

they prescribe the huge dose of folic acid is that MTX severely

interferes with your body's absorption and utilization of folic acid -

thus you must take megadoses of it in order for the tiny amount you

need to get into your system. If you don't take it, you may suffer

some signs of folic acid deficiency - oral ulcers, mouth sores, etc.

I had nasal sores which went away when I went up to 3 mg folic acid.

I also found that the folic acid helped mitigate the nausea I got

from MTX.

Be patient. Also read the archives for tips on ways to help with MTX

side effects. They may get worse as you increase the dose. My

favorite tricks were 1) divide the dose and take half in the morning

and half in the evening, 2) take Benadryl the day of the dose and

for as long as needed to prevent the nausea, 3)ask the doctor about

increasing the folic acid to see if that helps the side effects, and

4) take on Friday so you can sleep through the weekend if you have

severe fatigue. I found that my body adjusted to the drug and the

bad side effects went away in time.

What dose did you start on? What are you up to after 3 weeks?

best regards,

sherry z

The folic acid minimizes the side effects of the MTX...i.e. hair loss

nausea, vomiting, etc.
