Guest guest
Hi, Do you mean a physiatrist? or , a psychiatrist? You mention both in your initial email. I see a physiatrist along with a rheumatologist. I love the physiatrist..she can handle the aches and pains that are not RA related. I have gotten lidocaine shots and lidoderm patches as well. Now that my rheumy is leaving, i'll be seeing her a lot more I think. Good luck. Guest guest
Many rheumatologists even after you have a diagnosis will suggest seeing a psychologist or psychiatrist. Depression can come with many chronic illnesses as our lives are changed dramatically. Mine always makes sure I am seeing one due to my anxiety. The more anxious I am, the more my physical health is in jeopardy and the more pain I experience. However, you should definitely have the required tests for inflammatory arthritis such as the RF, ANA, CRP, SED Rate, and anti ccp, as well as metabolic panel. Getting diagnosed is often a long process especially if you are seronegative. Xrays and scans can also show diseases. I am seronegative and my doctor was supposed to be giving me a more aggressive treatment this past visit, and she ended up taking me off one of the DMARDS that help me, and left me on the one that I have to quit taking every time I get sick and am on an antibiotic, which has happened 6 times in the past few months. Be your best advocate that is the best we can do in our aim to find good doctors! unicornrobot <proedge21@...> wrote: Hello, I am 41 Female , For the past 4 years I have been experiencing pain in my legs , wrist , fingers , ankles and toes. At this point I told him NO you need to do your job and either send me to a Rheumatologist or order a Sedrate and ANA. He looked shocked and said OK ,or so he says. I took a look at the blood report and my WBC is flagged at high 11.5 . My glucose is Serum is 115. He never mentioned anything and brushed me off. It is my understanding WBC over 10.5 indicates possible inflammation. My question is can a standard blood test rule out connective tissue? Should an ANA and sedrate be ordered when dealing with joint pain? Anyone else told to see a psychiatrist for pain and fatigue?

Guest guest
Sorry a psychiatrist spell check changed it to physiatrist. He said it was all in my head. Guest guest
I completely agree that tests should definitely be done first. When I first became ill several years ago (I am 36 now), they couldn't figure out what was wrong at first. They thought it was my anxiety stressing my body out. Then I found a really good family doctor and they finally diagnosed the Fibromyalgia (although some doctors feel this is a " in your head " diagnosis) I find that more believe in the disease than those in the minority. It's just always frustrating to not have a doctor believe in it...We know when we hurt and we know our bodies and we KNOW it's not in our heads. unicornrobot <proedge21@...> wrote: Thank you , I am hoping he will send me for tests. Guest guest
I think that a good psychiatrist would either order the tests you refer to or would send you to a doc who would do the blood work. Sometimes it takes someone with a different perspective to really " hear " what you are saying and figure out what you need. My rheumy sent me to a psychiatrist with the words, " pain causes depression and depression causes pain. " I am thankful for her insight and the psychiatrist has been a help to me. Just one example: steroids make me a psychological mess. By having a psychiatrist involved in my treatment, I have an advocate who can back up my insistence to avoid steroids if at all possible. I certainly understand your frustration. I hope you can find a professional who will take the time to listen to you and get you what you need. Remember, we are here to listen and to help, if we can. Don't give up! All the best, Pat > > Hello, I am 41 Female , > For the past 4 years I have been experiencing pain in my legs , > wrist , fingers , ankles and toes. Guest guest
Hi, I just learned that WBC's are increased in RA, apparently associated with inflammation, whereas they may be low in Lupus. I'd certainly seek out another doctor. I know it can be hard. I should have been sent to a rheumatologist several years before I finally tested positive for RA factory. I kept complaining my joints hurt and I'm tired but my doctors didn't apparently know to refer me to a rheumatologist and I didn't either. I wish I'd known the other tests that could have been helpful. ez

Guest guest
Hi ! I am so sorry you had to go through that! I've been lucky that none of my doctors have ever thought I have been " hypochondriac " as some doctors label those that have symptoms but they can't find what is wrong. I've had a panic disorder basically my whole life. My first panic attack was before the fourth grade, but I vividly remember my very first severe one at that time. I did have one doctor, before I became a patient of the family doctor that I have now suggested it was FMS, that couldn't find anything wrong with me. Hmm,I wonder why? The only test she did was a urinalysis. She hugged me at the end of my visit and told me she would pray for me. I thought that was all well and good, and was grateful for that, but I was there to get help and diagnosed not to be told, the UA was fine, and that I'll pray for you! It was so validating to finally have a doctor say this is what you have and this is how we will treat it. michellefollet <michellefollet@...> wrote: --- In , stephanie <stephieann2@...> wrote: Hi, I was interested in reading you email as before I was diagnosed with fibro myalgia, I suffered from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME. I had gone from a hyperactive mother of three working at night and doing areobics a couple of times a week. When I got ill I couldn't get out of bed and thought that I was going to die. I physically had no control over my body, I had to crawl to get to the toilet. It was really terrible and I too was told I was anxious and needed to see a psychiatrist. They thought I was suffering from depression. And the pain I had was from fibro myalgia but that was not regonised at the time !!! I knew I wasn't depressed I wanted to do things and live my life, my body just wouldn't co operate. Of course any illness can make you feel depressed after a while which is understandable, but there is a difference. Finally I started to get a diagnosis and from then I have gone on to have RA. But I can fully understand people's frustration when they can't get any answers. As you said we know 'it is not in our heads' !!! And at times I have had to deal with people's ignorance, they cannot see our pain, so sometimes they don't understand that it exsists !!! Guest guest
Hi... Regular Docs and Rhuemy's all seem to have the attitude that they are not there for you to talk to them about how you're feeling. Most don't have the time to listen anyway, and can't help...since they aren't psychiatrist. Kinda blunt...but it's the truth. A good therapist is helpful.....gives you someone to talk to about what you are going through. Luckily...my wife seems to understand. She has lower back and foot problems and understands that I am in pain 24-7-365. I am lucky since my RA has continued to respond to Embrel perfectly....just as the doc hoped it would. I don't have many flare ups, and when I do, they are usually the day before I get my next shot. My OA....different story. I am house bound right now until my parts for my leg brace get here....as a couple of screws that are important to it stripped and need to be replaced. I really can't walk much without my leg brace....so I am home stuck doing laundry!!!!! Oh well...me and my Bichon's are curled up in my chair while I am writing to ya'll!!! One of the great things about the list is it gives you a place to vent/cry/get angry/cry some more/ and just flat out get mad. It's okay...we will listen and give you a shoulder to cry on!!! Guest guest
Sorry, I am getting on this kinda late. My grandma is in hospice and my husband wants to file for legal seperation and that has been the past 48 hours. I agree with on this, you need to see a rheumatologist and get the correct labs done. You can ask to see another doctor through your insurance. I have been told to see a psychiatrist on more then one occasion. I was told that I was a drug seeker, I had Munchausion, etc. This didn't work for me, but just because it didn't work for me, doesn't mean that it would work for you. You can see a pain management pychiatrist. These guys are trained to help people w/ chronic pain disorders. They can teach you biofeedback. It's kinda relaxation therapy. I have mild bi-polar, depression and PTSD...so I have other issues that I feel need to be addressed in therapy for me. Get to a rheumatologist and if you feel you need to get into behavoiral health...try to find a provider who deals with only chronic pain patients and can teach you biofeedback. Best of luck to you. > Hello, I am 41 Female , > > For the past 4 years I have been experiencing pain in my > legs , > > wrist , fingers , ankles and toes. I really can't walk much without my leg brace.....so I am home stuck doing laundry!!!!! Oh well...me and my Bichon's are curled up in my chair while I am writing to ya'll!!!   One of the great things about the list is it gives you a place to vent/cry/get angry/cry some more/ and just flat out get mad. It's okay....we will listen and give you a shoulder to cry on!!! That's what we are here for!!!   Larry, Peek-a-boo and little Tommy...signing out!!! Guest guest
hi nicole im sorry to hear about your grandma & the situation with the hub as well. what else could go wrong. i HOPE THINGS GET BETTER FOR YOU, I'LL KEEP YOU IN MY PRAYERS. [ ] Re: Doctor told me to see psychiatrist for pain and fatigue? Guest guest
Hello, Does anyone know if there is an aid (like a bandage or brace) that will help keep my palms flat while I sleep? I have noticed in the last 3 months I wake up in pain, with my hands drawn together-thumb to little finger. It hurts to straighten them out. I am hoping there is something to wear to keep it from happening. Larry- do you show Bichons? Guest guest
I wear a thumb support/brace which is readily available in chain pharmacies, wal mart etc... It goes on like a glove and gives the fingers suport. Open it in the store and try it on. Wear it for 5 minutes or so before purchasing. If you swell you may need a different size. Good luck. laura abbott <petalpshr@...> wrote: Hello, Does anyone know if there is an aid (like a bandage or brace) that will help keep my palms flat while I sleep?
