Guest guest
, I did my thesis on The Effects of Exercise and Menstrual Cycle on Hunger in Obese Females. Granted, it was 25 years ago and there's been more research but the effect of exercise on hunger (vs appetite) is not that simple. The reason I embarked on the study was because the literature at the time said that exercise reduced hunger but my friends and I didn't find that to be true to it occurred to me that women might be different (duh!) because sex hormones might be involved. It's well known that hunger (and appetite for certain foods) cycles with the changes in estrogen/progesterone during the month. What I found in my (pilot) study was that exercise was not the determining factor but where a woman was in her cycle was. Exercise could mediate some of the effects of hormones but not all. There's still a lot more research to be done in this area. That's why we dietitians say that obesity is a multifactorial issue. One size doesn't fit all. So many professionals (including us) tell people that a bout of exercise increases metabolism for hours afterwards. Now that's being called into question?? Sharon Salomon, M.S., R.D.
