Guest guest
We dietitians can be big whiners. There are so many of us who refuse GOOD leadership, refuse to join dedicated volunteers who defend legislative interests, by refusing to attend fundraisers, refusing to meet with legislators, making ADA and the folks who support them look like loner clowns. Where are the 200 dietitians who show up in force to defend their own interests? Even when it costs ZIP we cannot be bothered. THINK. Guest guest
I gave up when I was told my input was not wanted or desired by the ADA rep. I remember Ann Bock apolagizing for her to several at our local meeting. It still left a bad taste in my mouth. Locally my help is not wanted simply because I am not a member and only members can help in planning meeting etc. ADA rules. Guest guest
Personally, this is like shutting the barn door once the horse gets out. Another waste of taxpayer's dollars. A disproportionate of health care dollars goes to the elderly (even when you factor in the aging process with more health issues). Many of the medications can be discontinued that the elderly are on. I see it all the time. End of life care is one of the most expensive health costs, even when quality of life is poor we keep spending and trying to get a few more days of a life which is miserable and painful. Working with lots of elderly in my consulting, young and " old " elderly, most of the ones I talk to don't want to make the effort to lose weight. They will tweak their diabetic or heart healthy diet but that is about it. In fact a report came out today that fitness has more of a positive effect on mortality than BMI. Plus overweight elderly do better after surgery than thin elderly. I would prefer those dollars go for the younger population. Prevention! This is where RDs need to be!! Guest guest
So they told you NOT to quietly attend legislative fundraisers in a show of support for legislators willing to champion our cause? Guest guest
Maybe they should have started with Medicaid. But does it always have to be that way? Gastric bypass didn't start with Medicare - insurance (not all) covered it first. Medicare came later and just recently (correct me if I am wrong). Plus isn't it difficult for young Dietitians to become registered due to the lack of Internships and the cost of them? Guest guest
That is exactly the problem. The issue is not the covered service but the covered provider. If Medicare excludes dietitians and encourages (pays) all other health professionals to address the obesity problem, we are left out and will be excluded with all health insurance benefits for young and old. in fact, we, who are the most qualified, will lose future patients. Only those who choose and can afford to go out of network will seek the services of a dietitian. This is the beginning of a disaster for those of us in private practice. Guest guest
Agreed. We are needed at the start of life much more than at the end. However it's wrong to give the reimbursement to the ppl that are least qualified. Don't tell me MDs and nurses are expert in obesity w/o pills and gimmicks. Guest guest
I have to smile at your comments. For the last twenty years I have lived in El Paso TX a 10-12 hour road trip to any real lefislative fundraisers. El Paso is so loved by Texas that when the state published a map without El Paso on it, it was left as is. Right now I am 378 air miles from Anchorage which is about 780 miles from the state capital of Alaska. I was active in Conn. but that was more then twenty years ago. Even then we where told not to rock the boat and not to upset anyone. Don't ever questions anyone nutritional education in the news ADA might get sued. I have had congressmen send replys to me stating that Nursing Home Administrators are better able to determine who should review diets then dietitians. Some of us remember when three hot meals a day in a nursing home ment hot oatmeal for all three meals. The ketchup as a vegetable contraversy got a reply that is was none of my business. I just got tired of always being told by the ADA not to rock the boat, be nice. It is a standing joke with the AKDA as I attend the meeting about every year on who gets to as me to rejoin ADA. The year the lovely ADA rep after talking about the evidenced based library when questioned about using it by a intern, snapped back " You damn well better use it. "  No one asked me that year. I really felt sorry for that poor intern and the program director. Unfortunelty from what I have seen that is about par for the course for ADA reps. I am not complaining, I am just tired of being told if your not active you are part of the problem on one hand and don't rock the boat, don't make that opposition angry they have deep pockets. So we are where we are. I think if you really look around there are so many of us who have just written off ADA as a do nothing organization just comitted to keep Chicago's status quo. Again no one really wants to rock the boat after all ADA controls CDR and you might lose your RD.  Jackie Chase RD Dillingham AK To: " rd-usa " <rd-usa > Sent: Tuesday, December 6, 2011 4:34 PM Subject: Re: Re: Reimbursement for Obesity Counseling: REPENT!
