Guest guest
Don: Thanks for sharing that with us. Boy does my fall into that category. Right now he is the town dump selling poppies, and he is so worried about leaving me alone. Don't do anything till I get home or be careful, it just goes on and on, bless his heart, and yours for sending it. Your probably laughing at the " town dump part " , but he is a WW11 vet, and this is a small town, and thats where all the " action " is on Saturday. Guest guest
Vivian: We have to laugh, but worries. Have you ever (or the rest of this fabulous group) had this problem??? If I fight him not to do the things I can or want to do, he gets so hurt. will 79, and has a lot of energy. Anybody who has met him, can't believe he is that age. But I see him starting to get tired (he won't admit it). Last week I suggested I get a neighbor who does housework for a living, and is very reasonable, to come in and do some heavy cleaning. Well was he insulted, and the next thing, he is in the bedroom polishing to beat the band. He says that what ever I want done just " ask him " . But it seems like all is say " is ny do this and do that " and he never refuses or says he is tired, when I know darn right well. Do Insist and hurt him, or just insist till he gets use to it??? Tonight we Gladi and i are going to friends for dinner and cards. I feel like making and bringing a home made apple pie (thanks to the Pillsbury Dough Boy Ready made crust, but I don't tell, and everybody thinks it's mine). But I do all the rest from scratch, and the last thing he said when he went out was " wait till I get home to cut the apples. I have one hour, do I cut the apples or what??? I wished he would say " good for you " , but he won't, he won't be mad, just hurt. Oh well I guess I could have worse problems. I was like , I wanted to do everything for her because I wanted the best for her.but the best for her is to let her do what she can as long as there is no danger||| I would open her mail, put on her slippers, help her dress, and many other things. I learned that she needed to use her hands even if it was hard for her. She needs to bend over and put on her slipper. She needs to dress herself unless we were going to go some where and she would need her strength late. I bring her coffee and fix meals and the things she can't, and she will ask me to do things at times. But it was so hard not to do everything for her for a long time. I am 76 and she is 70 (somethig)and I maintain our house (one story)as best as I can. Sometimes it looks like a tornado just passed through especially when I cook. And Rita slicing apples if your hands are effected could be dangerous. If I have to go out before she is up I get everything ready so she can manage until I return. Maybe this will help relax a little. I have rambled enough for tonight. I have a new address for e-mail, which is cbccarter119@... I'll get with Mark and remove my old one after I stop aol. Guest guest
Hi Rita, Vent all you want! We would be in that gray area too if had not been fortunate enough to find a boss that would hire an old guy. And how long it will last, who knows? Actually most of the extra money has gone to the dentist. My meds leave me with a very dry mouth so my teeth have been going bad. PLS and root canals - not a great combo! I am hoping the wheelchair gets approved since I can't imagine paying for that ourselves. I wish I had a Gladi! Luv and hugs to you too, Jane
Guest guest
Rita, sounds like a real gem, one of a kind. Olson lets me do things until he sees I'm hurting and insists I sit down. He helps me in the kitchen but I pay someone to clean. He isn't able to do it either. He always loved fixing things, remodeling the house and working on the cars...pre computerized type .... and now he can barely change a light bulb. One place I balk is sitting in my motorized chair. It sits regally in the living room and is a source of delight for the grand children but I want to stay out of it as long as possible. Certain things I need to stand up to do and he thinks the chair will help me. Think of all the years YOU did all of the things that is doing now....he probably feels good doing them so try not to discourage him! Olson knows that if I'm having a really bad day I can't cook so we eat what's leftover or he hops up to 's for taco salads! We aren't losing any weight so we're healthy in that dept. What kind of cards do you play? We used to play a lot of pinochle but Scrabble has sort of taken over. Have a wonderful day. Guest guest
Rita, I forgot something...the apple pie thing. It sounds great but Mrs. and I have a good arrangement...she makes 'em, I bake 'em, we eat 'em.

Guest guest
Jane, Keep yor eyes open on the want ads of your local paper. There's a section for medical equipment in ours that lists used chairs, etc. for sale. We found one at less than half price literally by the side of the road near us. It had about 9 hrs. of use on it and was perfect. A man had it in his front yard for sale. Also, our local VFW has a handicap accessory garage that they store donated wheelchairs, walkers, used stairlifts, etc. in that they give away and you don't have to be a veteran. They don't ask for a donation but will accept if offered. We have sent several people there who needed things. Check with your local Easter Seals and MDA . Sure hope you come up with some help. Peace and blessings, Vivian
Guest guest
Yes, but did they mention any REMEDY for us???? I pretty much have all the 10 signs running all over me right now! My doctor told me he wants to prescribe a destressing massage for me and I just laughed and said as soon as he could find a way for insurance to pay for it, or would pay for it out of his own pocket I'd go. Needless to say he just smiled and prescribed a new antidepressant to add to all the others. Peace, and may all be auspicious, Ohm Ma Ni Pad Me Hum " May all beings be free from suffering and the causes of suffering " Warning Sings of Caregiver Stress Hi, gang, I found something interesting in the P.A.L.S. Newsletter, (People Always Lending Support, Hartsville, SC). the information was taken from: Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association, Inc. 10 WARNING SIGNS OF CAREGIVER STRESS 1. DENIAL about the disease and its effects on the person who's been diagnosed. I know he/she is going to get better. 2. ANGER at the person with the disease: that no effective treatments or cures currently exist, and that people don't understand what's going on. If he/she calls me one more time, I'll Scream. 3. SOCIAL WITHDRAWAL from friends and activities that once brought pleasure. I don't care about getting together with the neighbors anymore. 4. ANXIETY about facing another day and what the future holds. What happens when he/she needs more care than I can provide? 5. DEPRESSION begins to break your spirit and affects your ability to cope. I don't care anymore. 6. EXHAUSTION makes it nearly impossible to complete necessary daily tasks. I'm too tired for this. 7. SLEEPLESSNESS caused by a never-ending list of concerns. What if he/she falls and is seriously injured? 8. IRRITABILITY leads to moodiness and triggers negative responses and reactions. Leave me alone! 9. LACK OF CONCENTRATION makes it difficult to perform familiar tasks. I was so busy, I forgot we had an appointment, 10. HEALTH PROBLEMS begin to take their toll, both mentally and physically. I can't remember the last time I felt good. Pass it on to a caregiver you know! Don

Guest guest
Yes, he is a gem, and I have made my mind up to get of my " duff " and help him for a change. I washed the dinner dishes, while he snoozed in front of the tv, made me feel good to see him relax. We play Conasta, teams gals against the guys. We usually get our butts kicked, but we have a good time. Scrabble I just love the game, would play every day if I could find somebody to play with me. used to play when we first got married, but he really doesn't enjoy it, he loves cards, especially any kind of poker. Till next time. Rita Luv & Hugs! ************************************* Some people succeed in spite of their handicap. Others succeed because of them. Guest guest
Jane, if you are worried about paying for a wheelchair, there are some organizations with " loner closets " of such materials. You just " borrow " what they have, and when you need something different, you trade it in on something else. That's how we got s' walker. It was loaned to us from the Carolinas ALS institute. Even though he's not an ALS patient, the neurologist still took the case, which means lots of our stuff is paid for by the MDA if insurance doesn't work for us like they should. Try calling the MDA office in your hometown and ask if they have a loaner closet!
