OT--very Scared and now in pain!

This evening, just after midnight, at our usual time, I went out walking with

Dewey, my service dog. Now, I am a licensed, professional, certified dog

trainer, and I know how to handle dogs and equipment.

Dewey is a 130 pound Anatolian Shepherd, so another 30-40 pounds, and he'd equal

me in weight.

Dewey is a friendly soul --a dog who loves everyone and whom everyone loves.

With one exception. He does not like strange dogs. Most of the time, he

doesn't hurt them, he just dominates them, there's some posturing, and that's

the end of it. Once one dog gives in, then Dewey goes into, " Now I know you're

my friend and we're going to play, right? " mode.

That is, when I let it get that far. Most of the time, I don't. Sometimes,

though, things happen.

Something happened on August 7th of this year. Dewey chewed through his leash

because of the stress of him seeing another dog... Due to some medication I had

been on, I did not realize he was chewing his leash until he was off of it. I

knotted it back together and said it was ok, we'd walk home. We would have made

it, too. If not for the little dog coming from out of nowhere. Dewey took off,

my knot broke and he went off after it.

The dog was not hurt, and Dewey was found out by the river, by a nice angel of a

couple. End of story.

This evening, I'm walking along, talking to another medic colleague on my cell,

and all of a sudden, my left arm is pulled... Hard! So hard in fact, that I

fall over. Before I know it, Dewey is at the end of his leash and I was on the

ground, having bitten through my lip.

I don't know what came over me... We always learn with horses, if the horse

bolts, you let him go. This had been hard for me to modify, because I didn't

want any dog fights, no matter if they were just posturing, and so with Dewey, I

never let go! Well, I've been having some weakness in my left

shoulder/arm/wrist/hand, and when I ended up on the ground, the next thing I

knew I didn't have a leash in my hand! I had let go! Oh my God! I let go!

I didn't do it on purpose, it just sort of happened. There was no dog fight.

Dewey ran off. He did scare the other dog, though.

Now, I have learned that you do not chase after a running dog. That is an

invitation to play Catch Me if You Can and I don't want to do that...besides,

I'll never catch a dog, right?

I called, in vain. He didn't come. The man, who's dog had been scared, asked

if I needed help and I said yes. He went and put his dog in his house and came

back out to help me. He said he'd take me to the direction Dewey went. Knowing

his past behavior, I said he'd probably head for the river.

Now, my vision isn't the best, due to corneas being burned away, and so I don't

go many places without either Dewey or Rod by my side. I was about to walk away

with this strange young, obviously-stronger-than-me man to find my beloved

Dewey.

Thankfully, Dewey came back then.

I kept apologizing, because I really was sorry, and they walked with me back to

my house, since I could barely stand up.

I don't know why I'm scared. They didn't seem angry, and they said their dog

wasn't hurt, but... What if they decide to report us to the home-owner

association? What if they say he is a " menace to the community " ?

I know Dewey is not, and I feel confident that I am able to control him under

most circumstances. Yes, he does go after other dogs. I'm not denying that.

yes, it's scary. Yes, he has punctured the skin of another dog. It was about

two pounds and it was one tooth mark.

Dewey has seen countless other trainers/behaviorists and we all agree that the

reason for his behavior is...fear. He was attacked as a pup and is now afraid

of any dog he doesn't know.

I am also in pain. I fell...Hard. My left arm feels like it might be broke, I

chewed through my lip, my top teeth literally ending up through my bottom lip,

and I just generally hurt all over...

I can't believe I let go! I am so stupid! Such an a***. Sometimes, I think I

don't even deserve to have animals.

I know noone's up reading this, but I had to write it out. Now, I've got to see

if my elbow/arm is broken.

Dodge, I am in CA and it's only 11:15 here, so I am still up reading

(this is actually still early for me!) I hear what you're saying. I

love dogs, and am willing to bet that Dewey is a real sweetheart, and

a perfect companion for you.

Last year, my sister's black lab was attacked by a Great Dane her

hubby had brought home. At first, it seemed like everything was going

well, and then one day, out of the blue, Sadie attacked Charlie. We

all adore Charlie, so she and I jumped right in to separate them . . .

Charlie ended up at the vet, and my sister, who has RA, ended up in

the emergency room. Some how I came through ok, even though I was

pulling on Sadie with all my might. Looking back, we're both lucky it

wasn't worse. But we do love our critters! BTW, Sadie had to go back

- just couldn't take the chance on her attacking one of the

grandbabies. So, I can see where someone who doesn't understand dogs

might think Dewey is a problem. I certainly hope not! It sounds as

though they understand dogs and shouldn't have a problem, though.

You and Dewey and Rod will be in my prayers - your arm/elbow does not

sound good. Please take care of yourself.

I'll be up for a little while longer if you get back and want to talk.

Dodge,

I am so sorry about all of this! I pray that your arm is not broken

and there is no permanent damage to anything.

Dewey has been such a blessing for you, I don't want anything to

happen. Seems to me, if the other dogs were on a leash this wouldn't

happen.

I hope everything works out alright.

Dodge and group;

What a story (true story). That was a great story Dodge. I am so

sorry that you went through that. THe reason I am commenting about

the dogs is my daughter lives with me and she has a boxer and a chow

boxer, german shepherd mixed. She loves those 2 dogs like they were

her kids.

ANyway we have to worry also if rocky gets loose. He seems to hate

other dogs. But haaaaaaaaa. he will lay down with our cats and love

on them.

Yes its scary if the neighbors will complain. We are very careful

with Rocky and Honey also. Rocky killed another dog a few years ago

so now we are really CAREFUL. No charges was filed and the owner was

really nice about it.

We are animail lovers. All our animails are rescue pets. It's a lot

of work to take care of them but its worth it. They love us

unconditionally. Even after what the previous owners did to them.

Dodge I pray for you everyday. I know you went through a lot. THat

reminds me I need to send in my donations to the firemens club.

gentle kind hugs

Dodge,

Have you ever seen the TV show, It me or the Dog?. Its on animal planet at

9-or10 eastern time. They have really good ways to control dogs and to help

get rid of the fear. I know you have seen many dog people but ya might give

this a try just in case.

Good Grief, Dodge!! I pray you've sought medical attention after all

of that and that you aren't hurt too badly! I don't know what

California laws are, but here in Florida, Dewey would be considered

a " bad dog " and would be confined to the yard with warning signs,

etc.. I know you love your dog, but it is getting too dangerous for

you to be walking him alone. Fortunately for you, the people that

helped you weren't wackos. I would have been concerned that he would

have gone in to get a shotgun in case Dewey was found. Please,

please consider alternatives for Dewey and please don't be alone with

him when outside............Doreen :)

Hi Dodge!

I am so very sorry for your fall! I hope that you are doing better and that you

did not injure your arm too badly! I have three dogs, a black lab, a sheltland

sheepdog, and a chipoo (she's my service dog for my panic and agoraphobia).  I

know exactly what you mean about the catch me if you can game they like to play

when loose.  My lab generally has to come home on her own, or we have to follow

her in the car, and she will come jump in since she thinks she is going for a

ride..which she is..around the block and home:)

A couple of years ago, a pit bull on a street near ours bit Sierra, my lab and

almost punctured her lung.  There is also 2 pit bulls across the street and one

day, they pushed the door open came out and attacked a yellow lab 6 month old

puppy that was on a leash walking by their homes.  Nothing was done to these

dogs, so I hope nothing is done to yours since these three pit bulls (the one

with my lab) and the two with the golden lab, actually attacked.  Luckily, my

labs lung was just missed.  The golden lab was lucky as well because they just

missed the jugular on him.

Most other owners hopefully will be understanding, especially since your dog is

what I call a rescue dog..one that has been abused and then rescued by a loving

home.  So many people are dog lovers by nature.  I hope that they have the

compassion and understanding that your dog deserves

This evening, just after midnight, at our usual time, I went out walking with

Dewey, my service dog. Now, I am a licensed, professional, certified dog

trainer, and I know how to handle dogs and equipment.

Dewey is a 130 pound Anatolian Shepherd, so another 30-40 pounds, and he'd equal

me in weight.

Dewey is a friendly soul --a dog who loves everyone and whom everyone loves.

With one exception. He does not like strange dogs. Most of the time, he doesn't

hurt them, he just dominates them, there's some posturing, and that's the end of

it. Once one dog gives in, then Dewey goes into, " Now I know you're my friend

and we're going to play, right?

Hard! So hard in fact, that I fall

over.

Well, I've been having some weakness in my left shoulder/arm/

wrist/hand, and when I ended up on the ground, the next thing I knew I didn't

have a leash in my hand!

The man, who's dog had been scared, asked if

I needed help and I said yes. He went and put his dog in his house and came back

out to help me. He said he'd take me to the direction Dewey went. Knowing his

past behavior, I said he'd probably head for the river.

Now, my vision isn't the best, due to corneas being burned away, and so I don't

go many places without either Dewey or Rod by my side. I was about to walk away

with this strange young, obviously-stronger- than-me man to find my beloved

I'm not denying that. yes,

it's scary. Yes, he has punctured the skin of another dog. It was about two

pounds and it was one tooth mark.

Dewey has seen countless other trainers/behavioris ts and we all agree that the

reason for his behavior is...fear. He was attacked as a pup and is now afraid of

any dog he doesn't know.

Hi :

I did break my elbow. :) That's just a typical summer accident for me, though.

Yes, and not only is he a rescue, but he's also my service dog, and I literally

couldn't function without him.

Dodge,

I am so sorry about your evening.  I hope you are taking care of yourself

somehow.  I love dogs...i have 4 of my own.  I'm sure Dewey is special to you in

ways you couldn't describe.  But if he's endagering you and possibly other dogs

you may want to consider some other options.  I am worried about it happening

again to you.  Take care of yourself and keep us informed. Paris

(((Dodge))),

What a weekend, sorry about your accident! I know you must be in

great pain with your elbow. Your dog is very lucky to have you. I'm

sorry how he acted out, but it's just him. Thank God he's with you,

bI have a lab that I rescued out of a puppy mill.

I rescued a lab from a puppy mill. I didn't know her entire story,

until I fell in love with her. She is a beautiful loving girl.

However, she has like a split personality, during a storm she GOES

crazy. I have accepted her flaw, and just enjoy the love she brings

to our family. You take it easy, and be careful with that elbow, T

This evening, just after midnight, at our usual time, I went out walking

with Dewey, my service dog. Now, I am a licensed, professional, certified

dog trainer, and I know how to handle dogs and equipment.

Dewey is a 130 pound Anatolian Shepherd, so another 30-40 pounds, and he'd

equal me in weight.

Dewey is a friendly soul --a dog who loves everyone and whom everyone loves.

With one exception. He does not like strange dogs. Most of the time, he

doesn't hurt them, he just dominates them, there's some posturing, and

that's the end of it. Once one dog gives in, then Dewey goes into, " Now I

know you're my friend and we're going to play, right? " mode.

That is, when I let it get that far. Most of the time, I don't. Sometimes,

though, things happen.

Something happened on August 7th of this year. Dewey chewed through his

leash because of the stress of him seeing another dog... Due to some

medication I had been on, I did not realize he was chewing his leash until

he was off of it. I knotted it back together and said it was ok, we'd walk

home. We would have made it, too. If not for the little dog coming from

out of nowhere. Dewey took off, my knot broke and he went off after it.

The dog was not hurt, and Dewey was found out by the river, by a nice angel

of a couple. End of story.

This evening, I'm walking along, talking to another medic colleague on my

cell, and all of a sudden, my left arm is pulled... Hard! So hard in fact,

that I fall over. Before I know it, Dewey is at the end of his leash and I

was on the ground, having bitten through my lip.

I don't know what came over me... We always learn with horses, if the horse

bolts, you let him go. This had been hard for me to modify, because I

didn't want any dog fights, no matter if they were just posturing, and so

with Dewey, I never let go! Well, I've been having some weakness in my left

shoulder/arm/wrist/hand, and when I ended up on the ground, the next thing I

knew I didn't have a leash in my hand! I had let go! Oh my God! I let

go!

I didn't do it on purpose, it just sort of happened. There was no dog

fight. Dewey ran off. He did scare the other dog, though.

Now, I have learned that you do not chase after a running dog. That is an

invitation to play Catch Me if You Can and I don't want to do

that...besides, I'll never catch a dog, right?

I called, in vain. He didn't come. The man, who's dog had been scared,

asked if I needed help and I said yes. He went and put his dog in his house

and came back out to help me. He said he'd take me to the direction Dewey

went. Knowing his past behavior, I said he'd probably head for the river.

Now, my vision isn't the best, due to corneas being burned away, and so I

don't go many places without either Dewey or Rod by my side. I was about to

walk away with this strange young, obviously-stronger-than-me man to find my

beloved Dewey.

Thankfully, Dewey came back then.

I kept apologizing, because I really was sorry, and they walked with me back

to my house, since I could barely stand up.

I don't know why I'm scared. They didn't seem angry, and they said their

I know Dewey is not, and I feel confident that I am able to control him

under most circumstances. Yes, he does go after other dogs. I'm not

denying that. yes, it's scary. Yes, he has punctured the skin of another

dog. It was about two pounds and it was one tooth mark.

Dewey has seen countless other trainers/behaviorists and we all agree that

the reason for his behavior is...fear. He was attacked as a pup and is now

afraid of any dog he doesn't know.

I am also in pain. I fell...Hard. My left arm feels like it might be

broke, I chewed through my lip, my top teeth literally ending up through my

bottom lip, and I just generally hurt all over...
