Guest guest
Because of a recent discussion on one of the lists about protein/amino acids, I started thinking about stuff we learned in school and/or told our patients that we now know to not be " true " or " healthy " or accurate. We as a profession promoted margarine because we didn't know about trans fats until much later. We went back and forth about PUFA and MUFA and which were better or preferable. Eating eggs is another one. In my research for articles on menopause, I learned a lot about what isn't necessarily a recommendation for the masses (ie, soy) to reduce hot flashes. So I've been wondering, what other recommendations/beliefs have we backtracked on or changed our recommendation after more research became available. Would appreciate input. Thanks. Guest guest
The diabetic diet, now that is a real donny brook. Let's see A & B vegetables then only vegetables then starchy vegetables in with breads. Then what is a diabetic diet 7-7-7-3, 60-20-30, by the way there is no official diabetic diet. I have always had problems with increasing the CHO over the RDI for diabetics and then expect good control. Yes there is a RDI for CHO and arsenic. Here is another one I always had interesting conversations with the renal attending. Increase protein to 1.2 g/kg but keep the Phos under 600 mg no one wants to take all those pills - binders. He knew I was right and always gave up the phos restriction. Here is another one, type II diabetics do not need to check their blood sugars it costs to much. Here is one that will really bite pushing vegetarian diets. Look at the ancient pictures from China to see the difference between a protein poor diet and a diet with adequate protein. Yes, I know all about soy protein, except some people can not tolerate soy.The worst I seen lately is that humans only need 15 grams of protein a day. Eating local, within 200 miles is a real pie in the sky idea. We would starve if we really followed this idea. I still have trouble with the idea of live verses dead food. All food is dead at least the stuff I will eat. If it moves more then jell-o forget it. In the future I think pushing plant sterols will bite back, it is being found in plack, but we keep recommending it. The new interesterfied fats will bite us. It is already known they raises blood sugars. The salt restriction will also come back to haunt us. I think we will see more HTN not less we need to be pushing potassium for blood pressure control. We decrease fat in our diet based on cherry picked info and what happened we got fatter. Now we are cutting back on sodium to control HTN, see were I am going, scary. I hate to say this but I have become an alternative RD with age. I look very hard at the party line and wonder what is going on. So much for my rant. : ) Jackie Chase RD Dillingham Al
