Guest guest
Hi Chris! I started Plaquenil in December 2007 and by mid January noticed a decrease in my vision/blurriness. At the time I was also recovering from a case of scleritis so I thought that perhaps it was related to that however.... In April I went for my 3 month checkup to my ophthalmologist and failed my visual field test which led to more testing and found out that I had developed discoloration around my macula. Long story short... I stopped Plaquenil at the end of April and within 2 weeks my vision returned to normal. I still have the damage to my retina however it is contained and not leaking. I will now be followed by my regular ophthalmologist every 4 months and the retina specialist every 2 until they are convinced that the damage is contained..... Both have told me that even though I am off the Plaquenil that I can still suffer damage from it down the road.... Bottom line... Call your rheumy and tell him/her this. Most require that you are followed up by an ophthalmologist while on Plaquenil. If not, I am sure he/she will refer you to one. *~ Kami ~* [ ] Effect on Eyes I was wondering if anyone had experienced blurred or reduced vision. I have P/RA. I have been taking 12.5 of MTX /wk, 400 mg Plaquenil / day and 1 MG folic acid. I have been on these meds for 5 weeks and this is the first med's that I have taken. My P seems to be spreading and worsending and so is the RA symptoms and I am having vision problems. I have been blaming the reduced vision on being 40 + years old now but I am beginning to wonder if the disease or the medicine could be the culprit. Any thoughts? Thanks, Chris
Guest guest
I also developed problems and was pulled off Plaquenil about a year ago. I also failed a visual field test. It's SO important to have regular eye exams with an ophthalmologist, NOT an optometrist when you're on this medication. _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of ~ Kami ~ Sent: Monday, June 02, 2008 8:13 AM Subject: Re: [ ] Effect on Eyes/BAMANUT Hi Chris! Guest guest
I am writing this to inform but also ask anyone with similiar experiences to give me your input. On June 14th, I woke up and was practically blind. I could see shapes and colors but I could not focus on anything that wasn't stationary and then only with one eye closed. I was and still am very dizzy especially in the early a.m. While my vision has improved, I have to use reading glasses now to be able to read and I don't think that my near sighted vision has improved much in the 3 weeks. I tend to get headaches if I read for more than a couple of hours and my eyes are " tired " . I haven't driven a car as of yet and I am not sure if I can do so, safely. There is a delay in my ability to " re-focus " on a object. A second side effect was the muscles in my mouth would not work properly. This was on my right side only. I had begun to think that I had or was having a stroke. This has improved and I have regained the normal use of those muscles. The Dr.'s are blaming MTX and I am only now beginning to agree. I had been on MTX for only 8 weeks and it was just beginning to help my P/RA. I had better than 20/20 vision 4 weeks ago and was in very good health. My P/RA is in the early stages and doesn't greatly effect my daily activities. A couple of points that I want get across. I went back to find my post regarding my early warning signs. As you can see below, I was having blurry vision. My rheumy blew it off and told me to let them know if it got worse. It did! And it got worse overnight. I should have listened to my intuition and not my Dr in this case. I could get on a soapbox regarding mistakes that I think my Dr. has made but that isn't my point of the post, so I will move on. I am just now beginning to be able to read and research, and I have ran across (just last night) a condition that can be caused by MTX and other similiar drugs. It is called Reversible Posterior Leukoencephalopathy Syndrome (RPLS). Many of the symptoms are exactly the same as mine. A key word is " Reversible " but some of the articles qualify this as " sometimes and not always " . This brings me my next point: I will take all side effects (minor, major or otherwise) as serious. At this point in my life, my vision is more important to me than my P/RA. I realize that for some that might not be true and it might not be so for me as my disease progresses but I was too casual in my approach to my treatment and the drugs. I won't make this mistake again. Has anyone had a similiar experience or any insight to this condition? If what I read is accurate, this condition effects less than 1/1000. Lucky me. Sincerely, Chris > > > > I also developed problems and was pulled off Plaquenil about a year > ago. I > > also failed a visual field test. Guest guest
Man what a terrible experience you have gone through. I'm sorry I don't have any knowledge of this but wanted to ask if you know what drugs were mentioned that can cause this besides the mtx? I hope things continue to improve for you. > > > > > > I also developed problems and was pulled off Plaquenil about a > year > > ago. I > > > also failed a visual field test. Guest guest
Prior to this problem I was taking 12.5 MTX / wkly, 400 mg Plaquenil daily and 1 mg of folic acid daily. I am currently only taking the folic acid. I had only been on these med's 8 weeks. > > > > > > I also developed problems and was pulled off Plaquenil about a > year > > ago. Guest guest
Have you seen an ophthalmologist? I was on Plaquenil 3 months and have irreversible damage to my retina. There is a specific pattern of damage with Plaquenil toxicity. Email me offlist if you would like more details on my case. I was told I am 1 in 50,000 that it happens to within 100 days of treatment. If you have not been to an ophthalmologist, I strongly suggest you make an appt ASAP so they can monitor your progress. *~ Kami ~* [ ] Effect on Eyes > > > > > > I was wondering if anyone had experienced blurred or reduced > > vision. Guest guest
Kami, I have seen an Opthamologist and also a Retina specialist. There wasn't any damage noted. The Retina Spec. did say that it would have been extremely rare for Plaguenil to be the culprit due the length of time that I have been on the meds but apparently it isn't impossible. Guest guest
What did he say about the condition you mentioned? I must see a retina specialist every 2 months for at least a year and my regular ophthalmologist every four months. My vision HAS IMPROVED since stopping the Plaquenil and is no longer blurry. It has taken a good 6 weeks for the vision to return to normal but the damage to my retina is irreversible. Best of luck and keep us updated. *~ Kami ~* [ ] Effect on Eyes > > > > > > > > I was wondering if anyone had experienced blurred or reduced > > > vision. I > > > > have P/RA. Guest guest
The Retina Spec. is the one that actually diagnosed me. He said that he felt certain that MTX was the culprit and not Plaquenil. He siad that he did not see the need for a follow up visit unless I wasn't better in a month. I am approaching the four week mark later this week and while I am better, I am not cured. Hopefully I keep progressing but it is definitely slow. Thanks for the well wishes and the same to you. > > > > > > > > > > I also developed problems and was pulled off Plaquenil > about > > a > > > year > > > > ago. He said that he felt certain that MTX was the culprit and not Plaquenil. He siad that he did not see the need for a follow up visit unless I wasn't better in a month. Guest guest
Hi:     I have RA, and I take 3,000 gr. of Placquenil a day, .8 MTX injection 1x a week, 2 Leucovorin [follic acid] 1x a week, and 2.5 Pred. daily.     The only problem I have had, is Cateracts in both eyes from Prednisone. I had both cateracts removed last year, and my eyes are fine. I saw my Opthamologist before starting Placquenil, and I see him every 6 months. I have always had my eyes examined by an Opthamologist.     What a scarey thing to happen to your eyes so suddenly. I hope they continue to improve, with no further damage. God Bless you, and I am wishing you pain free days.                                                                 Hugs,                                                                 Barbara From: Melynda Gamez <melyndagamez@...> Subject: Re: [ ] Re: Effect on Eyes/BAMANUT Date: Tuesday, July 8, 2008, 5:29 PM hi i take mtx & plaq. i just recently notice i've been having some blurred vision. need to see eye dr. thanks!! god bless, melyndagamez 7/8/08 7:27p.m.central [ ] Effect on Eyes > > > > > > I was wondering if anyone had experienced blurred or reduced > > vision. Guest guest
P.S.     I made an error on my MEDS.    I take 2 Placquenil a day, and 1,000 gr. 3x a day of Sulfasalazine.    Sorry for the mix up.
