Guest guest
Jo, what kind of problems are you having with your hands. I have problems with my fingers twitchy mostly my middle finger (I'm being polite here) it will move up and down for no reason. When I try to open a jar or rub something like scrubbing the sink one or two of my fingers will just get stiff and I have to bend them with my other hand and then it goes away. Sometimes my hands will not get a good grip on things and I drop what ever I have in my hand at the time. Hope this helps.........Flora

Guest guest
Jo, I didn't see your post, but for some reason, my PLS communications have been minimal. To respond to your question about hand problems, I have weakness and clumsiness in my right hand. That is the side that my foot is most affected. Since the onset of my symptoms, more than 16 years ago, I have had an unusual sensation in my 4th and 5th fingers. Now that has spread to all my fingers, with the thumb being the strongest, the 2nd finger a little weaker, and so on. The 5th finger is the weakest. Grasping things, as a fork, spoon, needle, etc. is extremely difficult. That wrist is fairly immobile, elbow is contracted and painful, shoulder is 'frozen'. I can no longer do my needlepoint, nor play the piano. All symptoms are worse in heat and humidity. Dolores hand problems! > Hi: > > I posted a question a few days ago re the problems with my hands. Guest guest
Jo, I think that most of us upon waking up in the morning is the most difficult. Everything is stiff and achy, my hands take a little harder to get back to their normal so I run them under hot water. After I have been up for awhile everything sorta falls into place (hands, legs) but if I sit and watch TV it is the same thing so I lay down in the bedroom and watch TV seems to be better that way. I try to keep busy doing daily chores to keep limber. Since I broke my left wrist back in 1995 before PLS its never been the same. All its good for is hold things. I type with my right hand using one finger have gotten good at it too!!! Like you, I have a gel ball and putty along with a device that has different size rubber bands that are wrapped around a handle that I squeeze. Each rubber band is designed to produce a different tension on it. They give me this for therapy when I broke my wrist. Well I didn't mean to go on like this.............Flora

Guest guest
Thanks Flora for your response. My hands have spells where they are very weak and I can't squeeze anything or get a grip on things. When I wake up in the morning they are like that also. It seems that when I relax I get these spells of weakness, and when I laugh - forget it - they become so weak I can't do anything with them for awhile. Don't plan on giving up laughing though!! Lately the fingers on my left hand have been locking up or feeling like they will. I do exercise with a theraputic gel ball quite often but there are times when it is impossible to squeeze it because of the weakness. Sounds like it could be PLS related after I read your note. Thanks for the input Flora, and take care. Jo! Re: hand problems! > Jo, what kind of problems are you having with your hands. Guest guest
Hi Dolores: Sorry to hear your hands have been affected so much that you have had to give up some of your hobbies. My left hand is the worst but the right one is showing signs of weakness also. Also on my left hand two of my fingers feel like they are locking up at times. If I laugh my hands become extremely weak and I am unable to use them for awhile. Weird eh!! Will plug along and keep squeezing my theraputic gel ball to try and strengthen them. Take care. Guest guest
Dear Jo, I hope my response about hand problems reached you. I forgot to mention that when I change position, like getting up from bed or getting up from a chair, the fingers on my right hand 'claw', meaning they go into spasm. I've had lots of PT, so want to share something with you. I have the exercise ball and exercise putty, too, which help with strengthening. However, the tendency for the fingers to curl up won't be helped by that squeezing exercise. What you need to do is to keep the opposite mechanism as flexible as possible. Applying pressure to bend the fingers and palm backwards is good. Weight bearing on the hand helps reduce the spasticity, so leaning on your flattened palms on the kitchen counter is good. Even a loose rubber band around the fingers and your spreading the fingers is beneficial. Dolores Re: hand problems! > > > > Jo, what kind of problems are you having with your hands. Guest guest
I have problems with my hands but I also have Rheumatoid Arthritis and thought that was why I had problems. I am going to my neuologist next week and was going to get his opinion. Will let you know. Oh, I also have carpel tunnel syndrome. kathy JoJo wrote: > Hi: > > I posted a question a few days ago re the problems with my hands. Guest guest
Jo, Every time I yawn, both of my hands curl inward and tremble at a much higher frequency than I can achieve otherwise. When I drive too long without stretching and flexing my fingers, one or the other of my forefingers will spasm. It straightens out very stiff and flexes downward from my knuckle - very painful. I had no such problems before PLS. Vaughn hand problems! > Hi: > > I posted a question a few days ago re the problems with my hands. Guest guest
Thanks so much Dolores. I will try the other things you have suggested. At least I know now I am not alone with these hand problems. My best to you and thanks again. Jo! Guest guest
Thanks for the reply Kathy. I also have some arthritis in the middle finger on my left hand and was wondering if that was part of the problem. Hope your appointment goes okay and will look forward to hearing from you. Jo! Guest guest
Thanks for the input Vaughn. I don't have too much pain (lucky in that respect) it is just a nuisance for the time being. Guest guest
Flora, Funny, I hadn't really thought about my fingers tightening being a possible symptom of PLS. For several years now my right forefinger and middle finger will stiffen while I am cutting something or twisting some lid off and I have to manipulate them with my left hand to loosen them up. This may have been one of the first symptoms I had, since it has been going on longer than 8 or 9 years. Scrubbing dishes or the sink does the same thing. Interesting what we remember when someone else mentions it here. Thanks, Mike belgium46@... wrote: > Jo, what kind of problems are you having with your hands. Guest guest
Dolores, Another odd coincidence. I just noticed today, again, that I have problems picking up the telephone in my office with my left hand. Putting it down is difficult. My wrist doesn't want to rotate and my lower arm agrees with my wrist. I almost have to drop the phone back into its cradle. There is some discomfort involved, also. The whole arm is affected, up to my shoulder. That is my weak side, also. Strange. Two postings and two things I hadn't really attributed to possible PLS symptoms, just getting older.
