Colleagues, please excuse my cross-post. A friend has requested help for

his son, and I am not versed in either sports nutrition or pediatrics. I

am hoping someone can refer me to an RD who is one or the other (or both).

Details are:

15 year-old male (16 in June 2012)

6'3 " (no change in height since one year); 320 lbs

On high school football team and is being scouted by colleges for

football scholarship; 3.8 GPA

Activity level: lifts weights one hour daily at intense level (squats

300 lbs)

In spring will start one hour jogging daily with 10-20 yard sprints;

also will start two hours daily of intense practice.

He would like to reduce weight to 185 lbs over four to six months; coach

believes this is a safe weight and agrees. (My observation: I also

believe this to be a safe weight for him; I have been concerned for some

time about his rapid weight gain.)

He states he requires a structured diet, as otherwise he overeats,

including excess snacking.

Examples of usual diet:

Breakfast - cereal, bagels, toast, milk (no juice)

Lunch - peanut butter & jelly sandwich, ham and cheese

Dinner - spaghetti; burritos; enchiladas; hamburgers; vegetables such as

green beans, corn; sweetened fruits

The family lives in Colorado at approximately 5000'.

If anyone can help me to provide a sound eating plan for this young man,

please contact me offlist. I can work with the family personally, but

need guidance, as I have no experience with adolescents, particularly an

athlete. I am not comfortable estimating maintenance calorie and protein

needs, let alone for weight loss.

Thanks for any help,

ne
