In my 20 year history, nobody has questioned my taking MTX, dentists or

physicians. Why would one cause you to not take the MTX? I don't understand.

Hi, Pam!

My dentist consulted with my rheumatologist. & nbsp; The 2 of them came up

with & nbsp;a plan for me. & nbsp; Any time I have dental work done, even a

cleaning, I skip my MTX & amp; Enbrel the week prior to having it done. & nbsp;

Then I take antibiotics 2 days before the dental procedure. & nbsp; Everyone in my

dentist's office asks me when I go in for anything, to be sure I've done all

this. & nbsp; They are concerned that I could get an infection from any invasive

work. & nbsp;

Good Luck!

I take Methotrexate and I'm supposed to have a root canal done on

Tuesday morning. Does anyone know if I'm supposed to quit taking the MTX

before I have the root canal done. I was thinking about having foot

surgery done at one time for a overlapping toe. My Reumy's PA told me

that I would have to go off the MTX for three weeks before the surgery

or my foot wouldn't heal properly. Would that apply to having dental

work done too? I asked the PA at the pain clinic yesterday but she said

she didn't know. My Reumy's office never answer the phone I would have

to leave a message and it's usually a day or two before they call me

back. Thanks a lot.

  • 2 months later...

I am new to the group and have RA, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia and

osteoporosis. I am on Plaquenil and just started methotrexate about a

month ago. I am so very worried about the side effects of the

methotrexate. I have not had any side effects from it, but I am worried

about the risk of lymphoma and leukemia and lung disease. I guess I

read too much about it. It took me over a month to decide whether to

take it or not. Has anyone had any severe side effects from the

methotrexate? Can you tell if the methotrexate has really helped or

not? Thanks Margie

Hi Margie and welcome :)

There have been a lot of recent postings about methotrexate (mtx for short).

Rather than reinvent the wheel (so to speak) you might like to check these

out on the site. And you can search under 'mtx' or

'methotrextate' too and pull up old discussions.

It's scary starting mtx, but I have had wonderful results from it

(everyone's experience is different though). I think you'll enjoy the

support you'll get from this caring group.

Best wishes to you,

in NZ

Hi Margie,

Welcome to the group! Sorry for your dx, it's hard to deal with

alone. This is a nice group, and a wonderful moderator. I take

humira and mtx, and I won't lie, it scares me. But, we have to try to

help ourselves, and stopping the progression of the disease is the

first step. I have taken the mtx pills for quite awhile. I usually

take the mtx when I go to bed, and just sleep it off. If not, I get

upset stomach really bad. I do have high liver enzymes, and my doctor

monitors my lab work, often. I have no real side effects with

humira. I've also been on enbrel too. Without the meds, I would be

bedridden. I can get up on my own, and able to do most of my needs.

If you are worried, I would talk to the doctor, and make sure they

monitor your lab work.

Anywho, that is just my two cents for today, Tawny

Hi Margie - Welcome to the group :) I've been on 15mg/week of

Methotrexate for several months now and I've not had any side effects.

I think the pharmaceutical companies are required to list every single

side effect that has ever been reported for a particular medication.

In reality, very few people would experience the most serious of

effects. Hope this helps..........Doreen :)

Margie,

I was first on 4 pills and now on 6.  I take them on Sunday.  I have no sick

side effects (like nausea or stomache)  but I am joint sore on Mon and Tues (I

call those days my hangover days.)  Doctor explained this as the drug " wearing

off " .  I have improved greatly on MTX (I still take Plaquenil and predisone

though) I started MTX in June.  Paris

My side effects feel like I have the flu for a day or two after I take it.

There's been no change in my overall health. It took more than 3 months for it

to really take effect, though.

I started on 6 pills a week, but I was still feeling sick 3 and 4 days

later, so he changed it to 4 pills and added Arava.

Margie,

After more than a year, the MTX still wipes me out for a day. I take

it on Friday nights so that I can devote my weekend to naps and rest.

I have a neighbor on it and she just feels really tired the day after.

It has been like a miracle for her.

Two things, be sure to take folic acid. It greatly helps the side

effects and most important, get your blood work every month. If you

get elevated levels this is usually altered quickly with dosage change.

I hope that you have great results like many, many people do.
