Guest guest
Thank you and . By the looks of it from the link O. sent: Diet here <http://swankmsdiet.charityfinders.org/About%20The%20Diet> gosh....I could call it the Neily Diet. Couldn't claim that it helped MS but it's great for the heart!  In all seriousness I have no problem recommending this because it is pretty much everything I encourage anyway... limited sat fat; whole grains; no red meat; low fat/nonfat dairy; limited processed foods, etc... Dr. Swank does recommend cod liver oil which I will not but rec omega 3 EPA/DHA fish oil instead. Not a fan of cod liver oil.  M. if you have any better website resource that would be great. Also as O. requested...if there is any peer reviewed lit (for MS) you have access to that would be nice.  Quite frankly I am certain that just eating healthy like this is going to help this man lose weight (which he desperately needs), improve lipid profile and I'm certain just overall feel better.  Thanks for the help! Guest guest
I don’t quite agree with you evaluation of the swank diet. It is not the typical low saturated fat, as those for heart disease or eating healthy, in general. It is very restricted in saturated but must contain specific quantities of polyunsaturated fats. And ARMS group out of England came to the same conclusions thought they started with liberalized poly’s. Also – Dr. Swank agreed with me substituted omega 3’s for cod liver oil. Don’t forget his original research was in the 50’s (I actually read them all – he sent them to me). In the research he published in AJCN many years ago, he used MS patients at Kaiser Permanente as a control group. If you are going to evaluate this diet or recommend it to patients, you might consider additional research on the specifics of his plan or contacting a dietitian who instructs his plan.
